Enoggera now has a new giant pot plant at the end of the platform. Well worth the yearly 15% fare hikes!  ::)

Maybe they are replacing the magic muffins with pot.
Remember the days of stations with gardens which were judged annualy for the station gardens competition with the commissioner making an award to the winning gardens. not only did they look grear but they encouraged local pride in the local station by passengers and staff.

Media Release 27 August 2009

SEQ: Our trains, our buses!

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has called for a concerted effort to combat vandalism on our public transport. RAIL Back On Track members and public feedback have reported many instances of vandalised trains.  This is a constant problem for the operator and is disheartening for all to continue to have to cope with these wanton acts of destruction.

Robert Dow, spokesperson for RAIL Back On Track said:

"It is heart breaking to travel on our public transport and see scratched windows, damaged seats, and graffiti masquerading as art on rolling stock and line side structures. The community has become detached and desensitised to many of these effects.  The costs of the vandalism to transport operators must be considerable.  Public transport staff are frustrated and often feel not appreciated, and this in turn affects the morale of everyone."

"We continue to see more attempts at enforcement and regulation which is necessary but that is surely not the only answer.  How about we try a stepped up preventative approach?  Educate the community, bring people on board, encourage respect for property and person. Set up local volunteer groups that can keep stations clean for example.  I am sure there are people who would be happy to be part of a local group that helps make public transport facilities attractive.  These things used to be done once, but we became too focused on fares, enforcement and rationalisation."

"Public transport belongs to the people. This point is seldom reinforced but it is a good start point.  Our transport, our City!  Let's look after it!  Bring back weekend family/group tickets for our public transport.  This can work as a valuable education tool as it encourages adults and children to get out on their public transport and shows them what a valuable asset it is. It will help endear respect.  Step up the ongoing promotion of public transport in the schools, encourage students to look after their trains and buses."

"Engage the wider community.  Focus on the broader positive social aspects of public transport, make public transport first choice, not last choice!"

I see Shorncliffe has dropped off the list.

After questioning QR about this, I received a response that Shorncliffe "was never on the list".  I have replied with a link to Clinton's copy/paste of the web page (in a previous post in this thread) and details of a response QR sent me last year that indicated that "Shorncliffe station will receive some minor rectification works including re-roofing of the station building."

QR's been pretty good with information but this is either a blatant lie or there has been a serious breakdown in communication.

Stillwater

I offer another explanation.  My understanding is that Shorncliffe was originally on the list of stations to be refurbished, but has 'disappeared' due to complications.  Upon asking a QR person for an explanation, I was told that the roof of the Shorncliffe station is made of asbestos, so its removal as part of any remodelling would be extremely complicated as it would require the encasing of the building in plastic at the same time as the station would have to remain operational.  The public would need to be protected from asbestos dust.  So, what would seem to be a simple job has suddenly become a very complex one.  I dare say Shorncliffe has come off the list while another job has gone on, pending a rethink of the situation.  Still, it would be nice to have QR/Translink set the record straight. The presence of asbestos may not be the reason, but it is a plausible one in the absence of conformation from authorities.

Derwan

You might be right Stillwater.  And of course they probably don't want the public hysteria of "oh no!!  Asbestos!!  We're all gonna die!"

But yeah - they could've come up with something better than "it was never on the list".  :)

On another note, work has started on Banyo station with the removal of the main shelter on the outbound platform.

QueenslandRail is spending $200 million on upgrading some of its stations

http://www.queenslandrail.com.au/NetworkServices/SEQIP/CurrentProjects/CityNetworkStationUpgrades/Pages/default.aspx

Stations being upgraded:
Alderley, Banyo, Beenleigh, Birkdale, Bundamba, Buranda, Coorparoo, Deagon, Dinmore, Eagle Junction, Enoggera, Graceville, Loganlea, Moorooka,  Morningside, Narangba, Newmarket, Sandgate, South Brisbane, Strathpine, Toowong, Woodridge, Wynnum Central, Yeronga, Zillmere

There are some concerns regarding the lack of wheelchair access at some of the stations being upgraded.

List below extracted primarily from:
http://www.queenslandrail.com.au/AllStations/Documents/Disability_Access_Guide_All_QR_Stations.pdf

Stations which are currently fully Wheelchair accessible:
Banyo, Beenleigh, Birkdale, Coorparoo, Deagon, Eagle Junction, Enoggera, Loganlea, Morningside, South Brisbane, Toowong, Woodridge, Wynnum Central, Zillmere

Stations which are partially or not Wheelchair accessible:
Alderley (not between platforms), Bundamba (not between platforms), Buranda (not between platforms), Dinmore (not between platforms),  Graceville, Moorooka, Narangba (1 platform only), Newmarket, Sandgate (1 platform only), Strathpine (1 platform only), Yeronga (1 platform only)

Stations which will NOT receive total Wheelchair access as part of their upgrade:
Bundamba (not between platforms)
Buranda (not between platforms - have to use Logan Rd to change sides)
Dinmore (not between platforms)
Graceville
Moorooka
Newmarket
Strathpine (not between platforms - have to leave station grounds to change platforms)
Yeronga (1 platform only)

I'm annoyed that they aren't gonna upgrade Graceville, Moorooka and Yeronga to full access.  It stinks really because they're wasting a great opportunity.  Yeronga is right near the TAFE.  What's laughable is that Graceville and Newmarket are receving a "New accessible ticket window" when both stations are completely incaccessible to wheelchairs.

Thoughts? Comments?

We need to clarify whether the asbestos roof is the issue that caused Shorncliffe to drop off the list - until they can think of a way to deal with it during any makeover there.

Isn't New Market's ticket window already wheel chair accessible? I would love to see if/how they ever manage to get New Market to be wheel chair accessible in the future.

Have a look outside the subway, even if they made the station wheel chair accessible it still wouldn't be. The only thing I can really think of is if they ditched the attendants car park near the footbridge on the FG end and had a nice foot bridge + elevator combo but there isn't space on the platform i think to have the second elevator from the footbridge and there isn't really a spot suitable for a wheelchair/disabled drop off/parking zone

QuoteFacelift on its way for Corinda Train Station

WORK is well under way on the Corinda Train Station upgrade, with $1.1 million in renovation work and improvements.

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk and State Member for Mt Ommaney Julie Attwood inspected the work last week.

Ms Palaszczuk said construction started in May, and was due to be finished in the coming months.

"Renovation work at Corinda Station includes toilet upgrades, new and improved seating and signage, new roof, painting, landscaping, new passenger information display screens and scenic artwork," she said.

"The new-look station is part of the State Government's $200 million Station Upgrade Program which is improving almost one-third of the busiest train stations across south-east Queensland.

"The program is one of the biggest upgrades since services began in the 1860s and will give stations a fresh new look and improved facilities."

Ms Attwood said the upgrade featured installation of impressive community focused artwork.

"A huge 'wallpaper' mural with a nature theme runs along the length of platform five and in the waiting shelters," she said.

"The impressive artwork has a real community feel, featuring local endangered fauna and indigenous flora.

"I am pleased local commuters will benefit from the new artwork and improved facilities at Corinda Station."

Queensland Rail and TransLink are working with the construction teams to minimise disruptions for customers during the station enhancement works.

For further details about public transport, visit the TransLink website www.translink.com.au or phone the Call Centre on 13 12 30.

The tender documents have just been released for the South Brisbane upgrade.

Includes full platform raising, various shiny architectural features and historical displays along the platforms.   :-t

Existing configuration of the station is effectively being retained, just modernised (this includes retaining the southern overflow exit on platform 1).

I wish instead of all these minor upgrades they had just allocated 10 million dollars to 20 stations for a complete rebuild.

Its all about perception -- not creating envy among those who score a new station and those who don't.  You also reduce the political perceptions -- stations in government electorates getting better treatment, etc.  So everyone gets a coat of paint and a new ticket window instead.  That said, the aim would appear to be to incrementally bring all stations up a notch.  And a few will get a pretty hefty makeover, such as Eagle Junction.

Exactly we are slowly turning into some communist society, And instead of giving 20 stations a full revamp we have to give all the stations a little bit of money to get nothing so John and margaret down the road don't complain to the courier mail.

I think a better option to the "catch the buz" signs would be similar to what TfL does where each bus stop sign (all of theirs that I saw were a blade design like the ones we have in the CBD) and up the top in big font that was readable from a reasonable distance was the route numbers of the routes that stopped at that stop.

Coorparoo is looking very nice, heritage building has been restored, DDA compliant ramps, new signage. Only complaint was that it would have been nice if they resurfaced the platform.

Artwork unveiled at railway station

Photograph R Dow 2nd September 2011

QuoteArtwork unveiled at railway station

A new mural has been unveiled at Bundamba railway station featuring the talent of local students and Brisbane artists to beautify the busy station. The Tree of Life designs for the subway were produced by Indigenous elder anc artist Lloyd Hornsby, incorporating the ideas of thirty Bundamba Secondary College students from Grades 10 to 12.

Minister for Ipswich Rachel Nolan said the sixty nine square metre Bundamba mural was a fantastic addition to the station and was a credit to the artists and students involved.

"Bundamba station is popular with Ipswich line commuters and the new mural, along with the upcoming renovations will provide a more safe, secure and comfortable environment in and around the station," Ms Nolan said. "Artist Lloyd Hornsby and students have designed the mural to feature wavy lines and dots, illustrating the transformation of water to life in order to symbolise giving oxygen inside a tree.

"Stretching at such a large scale through the subway, the mural aesthetically enhances Bundamba station and the local community should be proud of the work that has gone in to creating it"

Ms Nolan said the Bundamba mural was part of a $1.1 million upgrade to the station.

"Work is underway at Bundamba to give the station a fresh new look, including toilet upgrades, new and improved seating and signage, painting, landscaping, upgraded CCTV, in addition to the scenic artwork. "The work is being funded as part of a $200 million Station Upgrade Program to improve almost one-third of train stations across South East Queensland."

The program is one of the biggest upgrades since services began in the 1860s and will give these stations new and improved facilities.

"We are dedicated to supporting activities across our rail network that enhance the experience for customers and make a positive contribution towards the local community!"

The number of statons listed on the QR site as receiving upgrades has been seriously curtailed - appears to be only those where there will be major works going on shortly.

I would hope that they are not more co-incidences of the type similar to the NCL duplication works that stopped at Beerburrum in April 2009, 24 days after the election and the seat changed hands.
It may make for an interesting analysis as to which works (in certain seats) have been curtailed.
