Queensland:  2010 - 2011 State Budget and public transport

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has welcomed the new and continuing funding for public transport in this years budget.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"In difficult fiscal times, we are grateful for the continuation of funding for a number of rail projects and the immediate extension of the rail line from Richlands to Springfield (1)."

"Many railway stations on the Citytrain network are run down, and the funding of significant upgrades to many busy stations is also welcome."

"We note the additional funding TransLink for services.  We hope that this is turned into an increased rail frequency, both peak and off peak.  There are some obvious gaps in the timetables that need fixing, and in the longer term a 15 minute  weekday off peak frequency between 5am and 9pm should be the aim on the major lines of the network, during peak times more frequent as needed.  Outside these times, and on holidays and weekends twenty minute train frequency. This will further encourage commuters onto public transport and help relieve the congestion and overloading on the roads and buses. It will facilitate better bus rail integration."

"We urge the Queensland Government to re-consider the Richlands to Springfield project and commit to the immediate construction of Ellen Grove and Springfield Lakes railways stations as part of the now immediate extension to Springfield. This would be more efficient, more cost effective and encourage maximum utilisation of public transport from day one of services. A significant park and ride facility at Ellen Grove will relieve pressure on Richlands railway station."
