'I love you' on the Ipswich line

Quote'I love you' on the Ipswich line

Rebecca Lynch | 6th March 2012

LOVEBIRDS around Australia are professing their love with cards featuring Ipswich train stations.

Designers at Able and Game, a boutique Melbourne-based greeting card company, were inspired to release a pun-filled, romantic card series after travelling on the train line.

Titles in the range include "You're Wacol", "Goodna gracious me, you're great!", "I Sherwood like to date you", and "You're Milton my heart".

Able and Game co-owner Anna Blanford said the line had too much pun-potential to pass up.

"We started in Melbourne with an 'I'd go to Zone 2 for you' card and went from there," Ms Blandford said.

"We came up to Brisbane a couple of years ago and we spent the day on trains and there were some really good station names.

"We had looked at the train line before we came up and my boyfriend, my sister and I came up with some good puns."

Ms Blandford said they had chosen to focus on the Ipswich line rather than the Sydney public transport network purely based on the station names.

"The Ipswich line just had some amazing names, I don't know where they come from but they're great," she said.

She said taking the images used in the Ipswich series had proved challenging.

"We were worried we'd get stuck at stations because we'd jump out and back in, but we actually got stuck at Goodna for about an hour," she laughed.

Ms Blandford explained the process behind making the cards.

"I do the illustrating, so we fix the image up and then I draw over it," she said.

The cards retail for about $5.50 and are stocked in Brisbane.

They are also available online at etsy.com, by searching "Able and Game".

The highway works are nearly finished.  It is expected that the speed limit will be raised to 100 km/h over night.

Hold communication equipment I think. Above the '74 flood level.  Always good to think ahead?  Pity about the track amplification ... lol

The floor level in those eyesores is actually below the 74 flood level by at least 2 feet they are at or very close to the level of the last flood.

This photograph 12th Jan 2011 is shortly after the peak.  Peak at Goodna was 16.4m 11th Jan 2011.  If you look at the photograph, station sign you can see the high water mark.  This is definitely lower than the bottom of the boxes on stilts.  74 levels would be lapping the bottom I think

Just after the peak of the 74 floods there was only about 6 inches of the peak of the roof of the station building showing at daylight.

Far more effective from both an operational and cost viewpoint to raise the two structures on either side of the existing platform then rebuild the station as an island with two flanking side platforms starting with the construction of a new side platform on the southern side of the corridor and moving the down main line accross to it while the existing southern platform face is straightened and widened then the up main could be moved to the new platform while the northern side of the existing platform is also realigned and widened and the northern side platform is constructed.
This would allow for the provision of four tracks through the station, wider platforms, the existing station building, overbridge and lifts could be retained.
When completed the platforms would be platform 1 for the up main, platform 2 down main, platform 3 up suburban, and platform 4 would serve the down suburban.
The subway could be rebuilt to the same standard as the subway extension at Darra progressively in line with the platform works

Sounds sensible, assuming that there is to be a quad through here ever.

My understanding of the Darra-Redbank triple was/is that there are no plans for additional platform faces, but I'm open to correction.

ozbob

If they extended the platform towards Ipswich, the existing lifts and footbridge would be retained.  The present subway junked and a new one constructed to allow direct access from Church St (were most of the pedestrian traffic is from Goodna).  The bus interchange would relocated to be promixal to the footbridge.  This would give more room and better flow for the buses.  I don't think we will see more than two platforms (modified existing island).  The third line would be on the UP side as far as I understand it.

Perhaps that's not the end of the world.  If we do indeed see a return to Redbank starters, which does look unlikely in the short term, then the most logical operating pattern appears to be to reverse the stoppers and the expresses wrt mains & suburbans and have expresses to both Springfield and Ipswich running on the suburbans, with IPS trains stopping Roma St, Milton, Indro, Darra, Redbank all to Ipswich.  Perhaps add Goodna for its high loadings and maybe Corinda for connections to via Tennyson trains.  This allows a centre turnback at Redbank which would be superior to some other arrangement.

Yes, I know adding Goodna requires the third platform on the line.

There is just enough room left on the UP to put in (back) a third track ..

Looks like only whatever is in that shack is a problem passing the station.  Surely it could be moved, if space could be found on the rest of the corridor.  Although I agree it does look very tight to fit in another platform even if that shack would be moved.

The bus area at Goodna is a real mess. Can only take two buses, so sorting the platform would allow that to be fixed up.

There was a big effort post floods to clean Goodna up, but in reality apart from some minor works at the bus stops, and the installation of a shelter at the kiss n' ride the station has had nothing really done to it.  So I expect that is because something is going to have to give shortly.  The platform up end would be the narrowest island on the system, possibly in use on suburban operations in Oz.  Passengers are not permitted past the lift but that is not actually practical as many passengers detrain from lead/last carriages etc.

The reason why the odd platform shape at Goodna was no doubt related to the sidings that existed at Goodna.  The workers train to Ipswich railway wksps was parked there at night at as well.

Stand corrected   >:D

By raising the two equipment structures to a level equal to the footbridge the full width of the corridor becomes avaliable and the side platforms on both sides would be underneath them, the alignment of the tracks then be straightened which would then remove the current speed restricted curves on the eastern end of the station.

Numerous car parks regularly remain unused on weekdays in the commuter car park to the south of the footbridge over the Ipswich Motorway. This car park used to be full at about 7.30am in 2008/2009.

Yes, seems to be unnoticed of late.  Might drop by there later this morning and check it out.  The constant foot bridge closures with shuttle bus might have turned a few off as well ..

I wonder if there will be ceremonial commissioning of the bubbler?

Could be big day for Goodna, like the day the PM came to commission the flood marker ...

I hope any plans to upgrade the station include widening the platform so that you don't have to walk on the track side of the yellow line to access the western part of the platform.

So now you want them to realign the tracks to widen the platform which will require that they widen the rail over road bridge over Albert Street.
Not realy a cost effective solution to remove what is effectively a minor inconvenience of either walking on the other side of the platform or waiting untill the train clears.
