I was excited today to see at Roma st Station that they now have recycling bins as well as general waste bins on the platforms. This is long overdue. I was however disappointed to note that they have removed two thirds of the bins from the platforms as a result. While there used to be three 240 litre bins along the platform they now have smaller bins and one waste and one recycling.  I witnessed people dumping rubbish on the platform because they would not walk half the platform to put rubbish in a bin. It was obvious these people were used to other bins being on the platform.

Is there any chance when people design new stations or make these decisions that they take into consideration that people will be lazy and not walk that far (or may be unable to walk that far). I have seen gardens trampled to death simply because designers would hope people would take the long way around on the footpath but they don't. A bit more thought would be nice.

Do others have a view on this or other small and simple ideas for better design rather than trying to force people to do things a certain way?

I raised this at a CRG for Dinmore train station.

I was told the lack of bins is essentially due to the potential threat of terrorism (ie, bombs in bins).  Being a major railway station, I wouldn't be surprised if this also applies at Roma Street?

Kings Cross Station in London actually has signs up all over the place telling you there are no bins within the station and so to either just drop it on the ground of give it to a member of staff. I dont think the signs say why, but yeah I'm fairly certain its because of the whole bombs in bins thing. In paris though, they just have hoops with an elastic strap that runs around the edge, so they can hang a clear plastic bin bag from the hoop. Looks beautiful....
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

well i know they put in some clear bins at central a few years ago. I think the theory behind those is you can see what goes in. However it isn't a case of having no bins at roma st station but rather just in one location.

To not have bins at dinmore because of terrorism fears is plain stupid. It is a minor station and it would be main areas that would be targeted.
