Public transport survey

Passengers using trains, buses and ferries will be asked to complete the public transport user survey during May.

This survey will help TransLink understand how and why people use public transport and to plan for future services.

When will the survey take place?
The survey runs for four weeks from Tuesday 4 May. Final surveys will be handed to travellers on Friday 28 May.

How do I participate in the survey?
Surveys will be handed out at train stations and on board buses and ferries. Completed surveys can be returned to specially marked survey boxes at train stations or TransLink representatives onboard your service.

Why should I participate in the survey?
The survey helps TransLink plan future public transport services by providing useful data on how and why people in South East Queensland use public transport. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of public transport in South East Queensland.

Participation is not compulsory but is encouraged to help provide a representative view of how different people use public transport.

Will my responses be confidential?
Yes. Individual responses will be treated confidentially. A full privacy statement is available on this website.

I'm interested to see what questions they ask. Hopefully the survey is conducted properly, but I wouldn't be surprised to see buses in particular run out of survey forms.

I'm sure it will be full of loaded questions...

1) Is Brisbane's Public Transport
a) Great
b) Outstanding
c) Out of this world
Evening peak service to Enoggera* 2007 - 7tph
Evening peak service to Enoggera* 2010 - 4tph
* departures from Central between 16:30 and 17:30.

somebody

I'm sure there won't be options like this:
How do you find Translink complaints (customer service)?
a) Excellent
b) Satisfactory
c) Room for improvement
d) Disgraceful

I would be picking option d, but if the question is asked, I think nothing stronger than (c) would be given.

Its almost like they dont want our feedback why cant it be done online

Not everyone has a computer, or knows how to use them properly. However, I have put in a query to TL asking if there is an electronic version, because I won't be able to participate otherwise.

Would like to see if they also have a survey for those who don't catch public transport, asking how could they be converted to PT users.

I'm a bit concerned- isn't this a bit like a school kid filling in their own report card?

To exaggerate my point, but illustrate it nonetheless:

It may have some poorly thought out questions, however, like any survey, it should also have a feedback/comments section for you to write in.

why not an online version as well, plus targeted focus groups, etc.  There are documented Methodolgies for determining customer persceptions, etc.  A single survey is a poor excuse for customer relationship management.  Could you imagine a phone cmpany just handing ourt a paper survey form to determine what products to provide their customer next.

It is good that a survey is being done.  I would like to see an effort made to capture non-users of public transport opinions/reasons on why they don't use public transport as well.

Online would've been far better.  A record of email address (with confirmation of submission via a link in an email) would reduce the likelihood of people submitting multiple times.  By having it online,  it could be tailored for both users and non-users of public transport

For example, one of the first questions could be "Do you use public transport?" with the following options:

Frequently
Occasionally
Rarely
Never

The subsequent questions would depend on the answer to that question. For example, if you answer "Never", you'd get a question such as, "Why don't you use public transport?" with answers (allowing multiple selection) such as:

Too expensive
Not close enough to where I live
No route to my destination
Too infrequent
Too crowded

I really hope they've sought advice from survey experts and haven't just come up with their own bunch of questions.  As others have alluded to, an "independent" survey should have been considered.

Edit:  If it was online, they also wouldn't need to go through the cumbersome process of collecting and ENTERING the results of every single survey.  It's like they're in the dark ages!  Results of online surveys would go straight into a database ready for reporting.

TL response to my query about if there would be an online version available to those who can't access the paper one:

Thank you for your interest in the Public Transport User Survey.

The Public Transport User Survey is TransLink's first network-wide survey.  It is designed to gather data on individual journeys to demonstrate how people use public transport.

TransLink needs a great deal of data on public transport use to plan for future services and improve current services.  While data is collected every day, this survey will provide a better insight into destinations and travel patterns of ordinary people like you.

Passengers using trains, ferries and buses will be asked to complete surveys, and some passengers may be asked to complete them on more than one occasion.  Each time you fill in a survey about your journey, you will be providing valuable data for future planning.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide you with an electronic copy of the survey.

Will there be a free text box to write whatever you want in there? Or will the feedback be limited to "sanitized" pre-supplied options to circle, tick or cross?

Coming to think of it, I thought GoCard was supposed to give the info. But on the upside, some feedback wouldn't be bad.

Hopefully it will be conducted and analysed by a third party professional survey company who would have professionally written the questions themselves after discussing with Translink what they hope to get out of it.

If I get one of these forms and there is no free text box, I would scrawl my thoughts on the reverse side or wherever there was blank space. I invite anyone else to do the same.

Has anyone gotten a survey yet?

I just asked at Roma St and they have none.

Possible Qld Govt/Translink 2010 Public Transport Survey Question:
So-fist-e-kated Mass Transit Symbol Here >>>   :hc

Q: Given Brisbane's WORLD CLASS mass transit system, how could the WORLD CLASS system be made better, without actually doing anything?

a) In an aging population make the WORLD CLASS signage even smaller?
b) When you're standing on a WORLD CLASS dark street at night, waiting for a long-overdue WORLD CLASS bus and you call the WORLD CLASS Translink 13.... Number, would you like to be told they actually can't tell you what happened to the WORLD CLASS bus in your choice of English, Chinese or Ancient Tibetian - regardless of your choice, be assured WORLD CLASS Anger is Gauranteed?
c) do you think running the WORLD CLASS single or single set (on-up/one-down) escalators at WORLD CLASS inner-city train stations could be removed completely or shut-down on a more regular basis for servicing?
d) Issue more WORLD CLASS media releases on glossier paper, using such innovative phrases as WORLD CLASS?
e) None of the Above, it's all just far to WORLD CLASS!
:-t

Important Officialdom Notice:
(No Qld'er has ever seen say, Non World Class Wynyard Station in Non World Class Sydney, with mutiple sets of Non World Class escalators, moving many people quickly and allowing some flexibility regards handling breakdowns and servicing.  Not for WORLD CLASS Qld eyes).

I grabbed one around 7:30am, just finished tafe, heading back to Beenleigh filling out the Survery on the 11:03 Gold Coast train from South Bank.

STB

Surveys were being given out on board a Capalaba bound 260 that departed Griffith Uni at 4:16pm.  Sadly, I wasn't picked to do the survey.

Filled in the survey last week. It was just asking about your journey i.e. where you started, how you travelled to the station, time it took to travel to the station, etc, etc. Sadly, no questions about what you think about the timetable, trains, reliability, transit authority, etc, etc. Maybe the information may help convince TransLink that rail feeder bus services are required?

Thought the same thing myself but hoped they don't use it to say "We have to build lots more car parking!!".  I actually wrote that driving to the station was not my prefered mode of travel to the station.

Unfortunately not. Its better from their perspective to not to collect the data on that rather than collect it and have someone do an expose on it.

I agree with you Jonno, TL have become obsesses with car parking.  Forget offering decent walk up services, so long as there are car parks!  Enoggera Reservoir is a particular folly.  I can go along with parking at train stations much more easily.

Besides car parking, what are TL actually doing?

Most conspicuous was the lack of Translink survey staff in the Ipswich area, they might have gotten too mant adverse (to their mind) responses from the locals both about rail services and the pathetic bus services in the area.

ButFli

I spotted Bob Dylan handing out surveys on the 199.

The only time I was offered a survey was when I caught the Spring Hill loop from the city to Spring Hill.  I was aware of the types of questions so felt it would be a pointless exercise for the short trip - and chose not to fill it out.

IMHO, TransLink would be far better off having an online survey developed that asks about your "normal" usage (e.g. to and from work) and any "occasional" usage (e.g. my trips on the Spring Hill loop).  It would have more penetration and would be cheaper to administer.
