I have received advice that the following will become the policy with respect being unable to touch on at a railway station:

QuoteThe revised policy for device failures for card readers at rail stations is as follows:

'Where a card reader has failed at a station, cardholders are required to touch on at any other operational card reader on that platform/concourse.  This includes any alternative device located on the same platform/concourse that the customer is on - unless a person has a reasonable excuse for not going to an alternative reader on the platform/concourse'.

We suggested this change and it is a good outcome.  Folks can now travel in an untouched state if the equipment on the platform of departure (or concourse where these exist) is out of action.

The present policy is as follows:

QuoteWhat if I can't touch on or touch off because the card reader is not working?

If all card readers are not working at a station, on board a bus or ferry and despite your attempts, you are unable
to touch on, you can travel for free to complete your trip. You should not touch off at the end of your trip.

The important change is that the "If all card readers are not working at a station" is now the "same platform/concourse that the customer is on".  This means that if you arrive at a platform, readers not working you are not required to run around from platform to platform.

Sensible change.

Thanks.

Its good this has been clarified. I have always thought it is a bit of a stretch for some  people to get to the other platform to touch on, especially if their train is approaching soon.
