QUEENSLAND RAIL COMMUTERS ALL ON BOARD FOR RECYCLING

Queensland Rail passengers can now recycle as part of their daily commute, Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones announced today.

Ms Jones joined Queensland Rail Executive General Manager Paul Scurrah to launch Queensland Rail's Public Place Recycling program at Roma Street Station.

"Having Queensland Rail on board will significantly increase the opportunity for Queenslanders to recycle while out and about," Ms Jones said.

"Queensland Rail will be rolling out dedicated recycling bins in coming months to be installed at more than 40 stations with Roma Street Station being the first.

"These bins will carry the 'do the right thing, use the right bin' branding already in place across Queensland.

"The most common materials expected to be recycled by commuters are newspapers followed by recyclable food and drink packaging."

Ms Jones said by working with the National Packaging Covenant and the Packaging Stewardship Foru m the Queensland Government had delivered more public place recycling locations across Queensland, including Suncorp Stadium, the Ekka, Fraser Island, Woodford Folk Festival, Sea World, Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville and Movie World.

The new bins are being assembled by Help Enterprises, a Brisbane social enterprise network, using recycled printer cartridges.

Since the Public Place Recycling program began, Queenslanders have recycled more than 540 tonnes of waste while away from their homes, which is the equivalent of the entire city of Toowoomba filling up their wheelie bins (35,700 bins).

This is a good move but they still need more cigarette butt bins around station entrances - They really ruin the look of the station very quickly.

They're at Central as well. Much better than the standard wheelie bins that were just left open.
