DEBIT card/student ID hybrids may soon be attached to go cards, TransLink has hinted after a high-tech multipurpose card was launched interstate.

News of a multipurpose go card that combines student identification and banking facilities comes after the ANZ Bank and Visa teamed up with the University of Sydney to launch a new student ID card that doubles as a reloadable prepaid debit card.

TransLink, which has pledged to roll out a combined seniors card/go card sometime this year, said other go card combinations were being considered.

"TransLink is focused on enhancing ticketing products and go card is an ideal product for co-branding with other types of cards,'' a TransLink spokesperson said.

The University of Sydney card, the first of its kind in Australia, features ID information, swipe access for university buildings, and can work as a debit card at shops and in ATMs.

A spokesman for the ANZ told mX the bank was happy to work with universities throughout the country to develop similar cards.

Brisbane's three major universities, The Queensland University of Technology, University of Queensland and Griffith University, said they were not considering implementing similar technology for their students.

UQ academic registrar Linda Bird said: ``While the University includes provision for a purse on the student card using its chip technology, use of the purse is limited to activities that the University agrees to, for example, photocopying and other in-house student related expenditures.

"To have a joint arrangement with third parties similar to University of Sydney would take the card into a whole different regulatory environment because of the broader scope for use of the debit card.''

mX is free at outlets in the CBD, Fortitude Valley and South Brisbane.

The go card combined with a debit card and so forth will allow for other expenditures.  Not sure if we should hold our breath though ...  might be long time coming.

No word yet for the promised Senior/Go card combo.   (You want to super size that?  No thanks, just capping ... lol)

GoCard should go into Taxis. Certainly need them when PT breaks down and you need to get to work!

Yes, would be particularly convenient if the go could be used for taxis.  Wonder if there will be surcharges though?

Despite the optimistic nature of this article, I am not sure if we will see these things added to the go card for some time or if at all.

I understand there was to be trial some time back using a combined GU Student ID card and go card but I don't think it went ahead.

This has more advantages than just the convenience of two-cards-in-one.

When the Go Card was first launched it was touted that you wouldn't even need to remove it from your wallet or purse, that you could just put your wallet or purse up to the reader. That only works if your Go Card is the only RFID in your wallet. Most student cards contain an RFID, so students must remove their Go Card and hold it up to the reader by itself.

Combining the two would mean the GoStudent Card could stay in your wallet.

It doesn't need to be tied to some bank account! All they need is a go card + student card together. Easy! Why overcomplicate things and try and force all students to bank with one bank, what happened to choice?
