Late last week, whilst at Bowen Hills station, I sighted notices displayed inside the pedestrian overhead bridge advising passengers' of possible incorrect train information might be displayed due to faulty PID's at the station (or something to that effect)!! I was going to try and take a photo of one of these signs with my mobile phone but those darn surveillance cameras inside the bridge rather deterred me from attempting that idea.

Indeed.  One display toggles between either direction.  A very odd way of doing it.

Especially when theres a second screen on the back facing the carpark/culdesac. Still, it serves its purpose, and the bracket holding the screen looks like in the future the existing screen can be shifted sideways and a second screen put in next to it.

I'd want the "Trains heading North" display on platform 2/3.  Otherwise, you can't see it if a train is in platform 1 or 2.

The existing LED type is still installed and functional on platform 2 for now at least - like the one at South Bank it covers all services up and down.

Can't say I've ever noticed that one!  I'll have a look next time I'm there.

From Monday, all the UP trains in the morning through platform 1 Darra.  This means that the Ipswich/Rosewood trains are going on the loop, underneath the Richlands branch.

Qld Rail admits Bowen Hills information boards can't be trusted

QuoteQld Rail admits Bowen Hills information boards can't be trusted

   From: The Courier-Mail

QUEENSLAND Rail has warned passengers at busy Bowen Hills train station that information display boards are not to be trusted.

In a sign that has caused much amusement and even astonishment for rail commuters, QR warns that the display boards "may show incorrect information at times''.

"We are working hard to get these upgraded as soon as possible. Please check train times on poster information and listen to announcements,'' the sign reads.

A QR spokesman said the boards would not be replaced for three months.

He could not say for how long the existing passenger information display screens had been faulty, but apologised for any inconvenience.

"In the interim, station staff are making extra station announcements and providing customers with assistance,'' he said.

New LCD display screens would replace the old boards at Bowen Hills and a number of other stations throughout the CityTrain network, the spokesman said.

Honestly, what is so hard about turning them off if they display incorrect information!

Stillwater

That's not my job.  I just sell the tickets and sweep the platform.  I am not qualified -- you will have to get an electrician to do that.  The PID person is at Roma Street.  I suppose I can fine their telephone number, if you care to ring them.  The PIDs are inspected every three months, we will have to wait until the next service call to switch them off.  ........ and on ..... and on .... and on

Individual units intermittently display the incorrect information.  It depends if the buffer within the individual unit becomes corrupt.  There is no point in turning them all off if one or two display incorrect information.  (It's also pretty obvious when they're displaying incorrect information.)

However, I DO think QR has dragged its heals over replacing them.  Northgate and Eagle Junction has seen their information towers removed in an effort to find enough displays that actually work.  EJ is scheduled for an upgrade, which is the excuse for waiting there.  For Northgate there is no excuse.  Their displays should be replaced ASAP.

On the weekend I noticed a mount above the ticket windows.  (It's either new or I just hadn't noticed it before.)  Perhaps this could be for a new display.

EJ or Bowen Hills?

Groverly now has mounts as well... But appears there will only be one set per platform.

Derwan

Oops... Northgate.

Something definitely going in at Northgate,  Another bit has been been added to the mounting.  (Looks like they're adding one bit every few months.  At this rate they'll be up and running sometime next year.)

South Bank already has the displays up, but they haven't been switched on yet.

The PIDs at Eight Mile Plains busway station have not had a good run this week.

On Monday afternoon at around 5:30PM, the city bound platform was hung up on 4 from services around 3:30, and the outbound platform had decided it only felt like showing Route 118 to Forest Lake via the Logan Motorway, and was showing the last 4 route 118 departures (at 20 minute intervals) but nothing else.

Yesterday afternoon the outbound PID had been reprogrammed to display a fixed message saying 'Please refer to the paper timetables on display', and was no longer even showing the time.

somebody

PIDs all over the network have been blank a lot yesterday.  Although they seem back online today.

Derwan

South Bank's new PID's are up and running - just in time for the South Brisbane closure.

Golliwog

Mentioning PID's and the South Brisbane closure. They've added in to them that trains won't be stopping at South Brisbane. Which is fine, except that now every single train listed as going north from Park Rd is marked as an express service. And as Park Rd only has PIDs that list the services, but not any showing an indivdual service and which stations it serves, it could be a bit confusing for those that aren't aware thats what it means.

Hope they get the PID's installed at Northgate soon.  The current ones are now totally useless, displaying the wrong time and direction.  These are the PID's on the overbridge - which usually display the next 3 trains in either direction.  The photos were taken just after 8pm.

No printed timetables either as far as I could find last I was there.

It's just not good enough.

HappyTrainGuy

Those pids are being removed from the network hence why their not reappearing. LCD screens should slowly be making the rounds.

Derwan

LCD displays at Bowen Hills are now operational.

Still waiting for the ones at Northgate, despite the initial work being done 5 months ago.  Have seen communications vehicles (with large optical fiber reels) there a couple of times, so I guess things are still happening, albeit extremely slowly.

Groverly had theirs operational the other day, No idea how long though (since I haven't caught a train for a little while)

SurfRail

There are some at Nerang at the southern stairs.  The old ones are still in place.

South Brisbane is still missing the platform 2/3 ones, which should be going in this month some time.

Saw them this morning, they look very good.
I think I saw them at another station also, possibly Petrie?

Have to wonder if a updated version of the "Tower" PIDs is in the pipeline.  I do recall the junction stations of Northgate, Park Road and Eagle Junction? had them.

Doubt it. The LCD pids replaced them due to QR not being able to source parts from the manufacture as those displays/parts were marked as discontinued. The new LCD screens now display more information than the tower ones did anyway.

These were necessary show more than just the "next train" on individual platforms.  But the new PID's show the next six or so trains (in that direction), making the tower redundant.

Platform 2 and 3 screens appear to be installed at South Brisbane, will no doubt be running soon.

(On a related note the platform step-up is still there on platform 2 at each end - not sure how they are going to be able to fix this though.)

The new PID's at Bowen Hills are having issues.  They regularly go blank or flash up a blue screen.

Also - has anyone noticed that at the city stations, the details no longer flash when the train has arrived?  This is somewhat annoying and makes you think you might have a little more time to make it to the platform.

I read something on a RBoT post here that said it was for safety purposes, to stop pax running to get to a train.

Might have been a reccommendation after the station safety report considering how frequent people getting stuck in closing doors/injuries/people tripping over near rollingstock were becoming  especially at Brunswick Street to Roma Street (saw one poor party goer sliding in for a try the other weekend while trying to change direction quickly in heels).

Yeah, that annoys me too.  However, now it displays 0 minutes and never used to.  Perhaps this is equivalent?

The PIDs at Bowen Hills haven't worked properly since they were installed. I can't remember the last time the screen for southbound trains on the overbridge (coming from the traincrew roster side) at the stairs for p3/4 worked at all.
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

Arnz

I personally think at least Landsborough and Nambour have the LCD PIDs installed, with information for connecting bus services included on the LCDs at both stations, similar to the LCD PIDs layout at Varsity Lakes.

Beerwah and Glasshouse should at least have the platform PIDs, at least controlled from Mayne or so when the stations are unattended in the late afternoon/evening and late platform changes are required.  Elimbah and Beerburrum already has the push button "The next service is in 59 minutes" talking bricks which is sufficient enough for them.

SurfRail

I don't think the QR-style bus PIDS have any future.  They aren't compatible with the INIT ones which are now installed at the Hyperdome, which are actually part of the real time data suite.

If Melbourne can have rail PIDS at every station, we can.
