I was recently in Singapore and the PIDs in the metro stations are subsidised with flash advertising. The ads would interupt the current departure information with a flash ad. Usually with a movie trailer, cosmetic ad or drink ad. This can be done at the entry points to the Myer Centre (Departure Bus information in time order), King George Square, Go Card screens as screen savers and on the TV monitors for QR departure information. Public Transport needs more private financial help in this way to subsidise and help rolling out newer reliable PID tech statewide.

aldonius

Busway/rail interchange stations should have PIDs for both modes on all platforms.

This PID at Cribb street stop 4 has been broken for over 6 months.

What is the best option along this corridor?  The new E paper initiative that's being rolled out in Sydney or a replacement white  lit led panel/display?

Cazza

Almost all of these PIDs are broken. They hardly ever show the correct time for the bus. The ones (with white LEDs) are slowly replacing them. However, they could probably prioritise which stops should be done first. I don't think Boon St stop 14 outbound (https://jp.translink.com.au/plan-your-journey/stops/002035) should have been replaced before St Finnbar's stop 16 inbound (https://jp.translink.com.au/plan-your-journey/stops/002038) or The Gap Village stop 33 inbound (both of which are yet to be replaced).

verbatim9

^^Let's hope they start replacing the PIDs on both corridors over the coming months. It's the new financial year so they should have the money to complete the project?

verbatim9

No action still on broken PIDs on Coronation Drive! They might as well switch them off until a solution is in place.

As from today and miraculously the passenger information displays are now functioning to specifications along Coronation Drive, after months of being  non operational.

A new PID ( white LED type ) has been installed at Coorparoo Square , Old Cleveland Road outbound.

Looks like they only replace the PIDs when really really needed!

First time I have noticed the NGR symbol on the Passenger Info Displays. Don't know if it's been around for a while?

ozbob

SurfRail saw the NGRs icons this morning at the rail Gold Coast PIDs. New possibly today.

Who would have thought that getting off at the Qantas terminal was the best for Qantas passengers? :P

You never know about travellers? They have covered all bases I suspect. Female voice over too as I remember.

Pids malfunctioning again on Coronation Drive haven't been operational for the past 4 weeks. They need to be replaced. This is an ongoing issue.

I dont mind it actually if it subsidies the system. They are only flash ads of short duration, community information as well as Public Transport info being played.

I am currently in Perth and the Perth trains are great. Every 15 mins and Driver Only. Very efficient and effective.

Here are some shots from the internal PID.

Female automated voice

"Next station Cottesloe"

"This is Cottesloe"

"Doors are closing"

It's very efficient, consistent and comfortable to listen too.

QR bosses and Mark Bailey need to take a trip to Perth as an educational on how to run the Qld trains to standard.

Here is a video of the PID. Might need to fast forward to 15 seconds in, as I haven't edited it.

I rate Transperth rail as the best suburban rail in the nation.  No fuss, frequent, full ATP, DOO.

It is a significant point that Transperth rail carries around 8 million passengers annually more than Citytrain on a network around 1/3 the size of the Citytrain network.  We suspect that Queensland Rail is inefficient, here is simple matter of fact that confirms it.

Unbelievably, Perth also runs buses to trains and charges $2 for car parking.

It doesn't need to deal with a local council or local council politics when it wants to change the bus network.

Took a quick video of the next stop info on Perth buses. They have the panel where it was designed to be behind the perspex at the front of the bus. They also have electric ramps. The last 15 seconds of the video you can hear the automated female voice announcement and the electric ramp being deployed for the oncoming passenger.

Same bus below it was the free city loop and got packed. PID in the background.

Public Transport and Real time Passenger Information displays in Queensland to be subsidised through a network of digital advertising displays shared with real time information.

New digital screens displaying advertising and real-time cancellations could be rolled out on buses, trains, bus shelters and next to major roads across south-east Queensland.

Transport and Main Roads has begun a market sounding process to gauge interest in its "digital messaging network project".

New digital screens could display up-to-date cancellations and advertising inside Brisbane buses.CREDIT:HARRISON SARAGOSSI

It would involve the installation of digital screens, which for the successful tenderer would provide an opportunity to "access an exclusive large-scale commercial advertising platform, on multiple modes of transport and road corridors across south-east Queensland".

TMR envisaged the networked system could include real-time timetables and route delays, free wi-fi, mobile charging points and emergency messaging.

"[Customers] want to access real-time information 'in the moment' at public transport stops or station, especially when disruptions occur on the network or services are cancelled," a tender reads.

Phase one would include the Gold Coast light rail's stations and screens inside trams, existing static billboards on the M1 between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and using the MyTransLink app.

Later phases may include the South East Busway, Brisbane Metro, selected bus shelters, park 'n' rides and bus interchanges, on-board screens on bus services, internal screens in Queensland Rail's New Generation Rollingstock trains and state-controlled road corridors.

It could also potentially feature the "collection and right to use customer data", while TMR would get a slice of the revenue raised from commercial advertising.

A TMR spokesman said the digital network could deliver real-time information to customers.

"For example, public transport users could be advised via messages on these screens of delays to services due to severe weather," he said.

"Ideally, the digital network will be funded and managed by the private sector.

"It is anticipated that users will have an option to opt in/ out of data collecting services."

The market sounding process is open until April 2.

Brisbane City Council already uses advertising "skins" on the outside of the city's buses, which last year generated more than $4 million in revenue.

^^This is a great outcome to get more real time passenger information rolled out into the Public Transport Network in Queensland.  This method of the private sector managing the displays happens overseas and is very successful.

Melbourne Trains Thread---> New onboard Passenger Information Displays

^^This is what we also can have supported and sponsored by in-between flash advertising on the NGR's internal LED screens. These screens only currently show Government led community information. They could be better utilised as real time trip progress "Passenger Information Displays", that cycle through 5 seconds flash ads which is currently done at bus stops throughout the city. A proposed cycle could be 10 seconds of Passenger Trip Information, then a 5 second ad, then back to 10 seconds of Passenger Trip Information. This can be rolled out state wide on all forms of Public Transport and could possibly be cost neutral to the tax payer and the commuter. :)  :-t

p.s. It could still show the Government led community messages but cycled through together with ads and relative passenger trip information.

Queensland Times --> New information screens to be installed at Ipswich stations

QuoteNEW information screens will be installed at three Ipswich train stations later this year.

Redbank station, one of the busiest stops on the Ipswich line, has received a fresh coat of paint and partial platform raising works are also scheduled for May.

Information screens will be installed at the Redbank station in June, to improve access to up-to-date information for commuters.

Similar screens will also be installed at Goodna station in August and Dinmore station in October.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said Queensland Rail crews will also on site at Redbank in May to raise the height of the station's platforms at the assisted boarding points.

The works are designed to significantly reduce vertical gaps between the platform and trains at these points, allowing more commuters the choice of boarding without ramps.

"Once completed, the partial platform raising will enable safer and faster boarding from Platform 1 and 2, particularly for senior travellers, parents with prams, people with luggage and customers using mobility aids," he said.

"We want everyone in the community to be able to use their local train station without barriers.

"Recently platform raising works were also completed at Darra and Wacol stations, with Redbank next in line on the Ipswich corridor."

The works form part of the State Government's $357 million investment to improve accessibility across the network and upgrades are underway at East Ipswich station.

"It's exciting to see works progressing at East Ipswich station, with crews completing preliminary works including earthworks, concreting, overhead powerline works and the relocation of signalling infrastructure over the past few months," Mr Bailey said.

"The detailed design and construction contract is expected to be awarded shortly with major works expected to kick-off by late 2020.

"The upgrade will deliver a new station precinct adjacent to the existing facilities, a new footbridge with lifts, raised platforms for easier boarding, and a range of accessibility features including new hearing aid loops and tactile ground surface indicators.

"It will also include a new ticket office, accessible toilets, a bike enclosure and improved security features, such as upgraded lighting and CCTV."

Stop 3 PID inbound at Coronation Drive and Boomerang street is busted. It was on its last legs. Hopefully get replace soon with a new white LED panel?

We've been trialling e-paper technology on the network! E-paper mimics the appearance of ordinary ink on paper & would allow us to show real-time information & timetables on solar-powered digital displays instead of the current paper timetables at bus stops.

^^I was wondering where they were trialling E paper bus stop timetables. I believe that is Melbourne @ Manning Street Stop 4 inbound.

James

There's also one at Melbourne @ Cordelia St Stop 3.

Makes sense for those stops to have a trial given the volume of services, frequency of services, and the variability in arrival times for services at those stops. They seem like a pretty low-cost solution too.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

SurfRail

I find it annoying that Brisbane needs to have so many different stop poles at a bus stop.  If the existing design was more basic like it is everywhere else, you could just have one pole with an e-paper timetable, a fixed timetable and/or an LED or LCD display, plus solar panel.  Likewise I see no reason why all the Cityglider stops need a J pole and a blade right next to it.

There needs to be much more effort put into standardising things state-wide.

Audio demo today @ Cordelia Street Stop 3. Note they are testing two sorts of e-paper PIDs. The one at stop 3 seems to be slightly smaller length.

Stop 41 Adelaide Street outbound has a solar panel and a real time e-paper timetable as well.

It may have been talked about already but I took a pic of the PIDs at the Helensvale Bus Station. It's now a lot better knowing when your bus arrives app free. P.lease note that the PIDs are working fine. The displays just don't look as they should due to the frequency of the digital photography.
