This old gem has been dusted up and is in the papers again:

Residents who oppose the building of another tunnel should consider the impact that widening Kingsford Smith Drive would have on the Brisbane River, Lord Mayor Campbell Newman says.

Yesterday, brisbanetimes.com.au exclusively revealed that a tunnel option for the road corridor was back on the table, after Cr Newman scrapped the idea shortly after his 2004 election.

Not another tunnel.
It is going to funnel 80 000 cars off the tunnel and then where will they go?

Rail rail rail ... why do they not use the asset we already have.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

That's OK for airport trips, but what % of cars on KSD are going to/from the Airport?  And how much to buy out the Airtrain company's contract?

Extend the line to Hamilton from Doomben, cutting underneath KSD.  I believe there are plans somewhere, some in Government are keen on the idea.

Airtrain, improve the frequency and hours of service so it is attractive.  Fares?  Reduce them, more folks travel = more revenue.  Be bold ...

Would require some duplication as well.  Also, the Doomben line isn't exactly direct so it might have some trouble attracting pax.

How about a loop connecting the airport line to the end of the doomben line
"Where else but Queensland?"

You really do have to question the bang for buck of the rail over the Airport Link road tunnel.  I remember reading that the former only cost $200m to build, while the latter will cost $3.4bn.  I don't think the road will carry 17 times the number of pax as the train.

Questions:

Should it be light rail or heavy rail or underground busway?
Should it be right of way, street running or both
How will it interface with the QR network (if at all?)

Im sure that the 2007 Lord Mayor's report had a busway overhang on the KSD.

QuoteShould Australians continue to rely on the car, the country will need 173,348 kilometres of new roads - a 51 per cent rise equivalent to the entire road network of Thailand.

Come on Campbell, build a tunnel.
... and another one
             ... and another one
                   ... and another one
                           ... and another one

Isn't this telling you something? If you have to keep building lots and lots of tunnels just to keep up with demand, isn't that indicating that the solution you are using is ineffective or inefficient (or both?)
You would think that one or two tunnels would do the trick and the problem would be solved.
Same deal with bypasses...

I think this tunnel should be viewed as a replacement for KSD, rather than a increase in road space. Traffic from the Gateway and Eagle Junction/Pinkenba will be separated completely from surface streets around Hamilton, allowing the option of more pedestrian activation along KSD and toward the river.

In my opinion public transport won't have very much effect on the bulk of traffic that already takes up space on KSD.

It will only be worthwhile if they integrate a busway, light rail or heavy rail with in the same tunnel that is proposed to service those new high rises and shipping terminals. Imagine that catching a high frequency train or bus directly to the shipping terminals a win for tourists as well as residents and workers with in the area.

The solution to our traffic problems is not to build more roads even if shared by public transport but to convert existing over supply of road space to public transport only purposes and build new public transport corridors/lines, etc.  Building a new general traffic road to improve public transport is nothing but spin and false advertising.

NO NO NO No more tunnels for cars!!! This kind of backward thinking is why we are in this mess today!!! I am growing fed up with hearing the almost daily round of pathetic reasons behind the push for more roads. When will these fools listen??? Expand and improve the already existing rail lines-why is this so difficult??

Someone has seen the light, unfortunately, yet again, it is not us...

THE state government will unveil a ground-breaking transport plan, conceding that it can no longer simply build new roads to fix Melbourne's congestion crisis and must instead transform the way existing roads are used.
