"HORRIFYING'' internet footage of youths "surfing'' on freight trains has been condemned by Queensland Rail (QR).

QR Network acting executive general manager Tim Ripper labelled the behaviour as "stupid and dangerous''.

"People can be killed or maimed, and there is no margin for error,'' Mr Ripper said.

The footage, which has now been taken off the internet site Youtube, involved people taking first person footage of themselves riding on the top of freight trains.

"People hanging on rail cars are gambling their lives and risk falling, being crushed or in some cases electrocuted,'' Mr Ripper said.

"Overhead power lines, pedestrian bridges, trees, there are so many ways this kind of behaviour can end badly.''

Mr Ripper asked the youths responsible to think of the train drivers.

"In cases like this, our drivers can become very distressed,'' he said.

"If something were to happen to one of these young people, the drivers would have to live with that forever.''

Mr Ripper said QR would co-operate with all police inquiries, and will support any penalties which may apply.
