LATE trains continued to frustrate commuters one month after Melbourne's new operator took over the beleaguered service.

Metro admitted it needed to improve its service on Sunday after failing to meet its punctuality performance for December.

Almost 13 per cent of trains were late during the operator's crucial first month of service.

Only 1.1 per cent of the 56,234 services was cancelled or did not complete the scheduled trip.

The biggest delays came just three days after Metro took over from Connex, when only 73 per cent of trains ran on time.

A signal fault delayed services on the Upfield, Broadmeadows, Sydenham, Werribee and Williamstown lines.

Metro chief executive Andrew Lezala conceded these infrastructure failures were not acceptable.

The Government has introduced tougher performance measurements.

The definition of an "on time train" is now 4 minutes and 59 seconds.

Previously it was 5 minutes and 59 seconds.

Compensation for last month's failure will be paid to commuters with a monthly, six-monthly or yearly Metcad.

Greetings,

Interesting article in the Herald Sun in Melbourne today (below).  This article confirms a couple of important points.

1. The performance of QR Passenger overall is good, Metro Trains is now essentially under the same yardstick as QR Passenger.

2. Commuters in other jurisdictions do get treated with some respect in that token compensation is available when performance targets are not met.
In south-east Queensland commuters are just seen as cash cows.

Enjoy your commute to work.

Best wishes
