Planning ahead just the ticket on New Year's Eve

Extra public transport services have been scheduled to assist revellers getting home after New Year's celebrations, Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said today.

"Leave the car at home and let someone else do the driving," Ms Nolan said.

Ms Nolan said while extra security guards would be placed on the busiest taxi ranks to cope with the extra demand for taxis, public transport could help people to avoid the 'crush' altogether.

"Plan ahead and avoid standing in a cab queue - a quick call to 13 12 30 could save you hours," Ms Nolan said.

"There will be about 1000 bus services across the TransLink network throughout the night.

"QR will be running 77 additional inbound and outbound rail services, 23 to bring revellers into the city and 35 to coincide with the conclusion of fireworks displays to help get people home.

"Extra train services will run after midnight on the Beenleigh, Gold Coast, Cleveland, Ipswich, Rosewood, Caboolture, Nambour, Shorncliffe and Ferny Grove lines."

Ms Nolan said the daily and off-peak tickets would also be extended to assist getting people home.

"Travellers who purchase a TransLink daily or off-peak daily ticket on 31 December 2009 are able to use their ticket through until 7am on 1 January 2010," she said.

Ms Nolan said people coming to the South Bank fireworks and celebrations were urged to delay or vary their journey home to help spread the peak travel period and use other train stations to ease the load on South Brisbane station.

"TransLink has produced a New Year's Eve timetable outlining additional services, which is available from selected train stations, bus operators, the Transport Information Centre in King George Square, Visitor Information Centre in the Queen Street Mall, Brisbane City Hall and the South Bank Visitor Centre," Ms Nolan said.

"Now is a good time to familiarise yourself with the extra services or you can use the journey planner on the TransLink website at www.translink.com.au."

On New Year's Day (Friday), all bus services will run to a Sunday timetable, except Park Ridge Transit and Westside Bus Company which are running to their Saturday timetable. Trains and ferries will run to their standard public holiday timetable.

For further details, visit the journey planner on the TransLink website www.translink.com.au or phone the call centre on 13 12 30, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Health
The Honourable Paul Lucas
31/12/2009

New Year's Eve party also a time for public safety

Acting Premier Paul Lucas has today encouraged all Queenslanders to have a secure and happy New Year's Eve as the State Government boosts public services to help ensure patron safety.

Mr Lucas warned that police would be out in full force across the state tonight along with Liquor Licensing officers to crack down on patrons and premises doing the wrong thing.

He said a total of 3,269 plain-clothed and uniformed police officers were rostered for duty on New Year's Eve and into New Year's Day across the state - almost double the number of officers involved in Operation Unite, a crackdown on alcohol-fuelled violence on December 14 and 15.

These numbers have been boosted by the additional $1.5 million in funding provided to the Queensland Police Service by the Bligh Government for Operation Merit, the two-month crackdown on alcohol-fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour.

The police officers on duty will be patrolling traditional celebration sites such as Southbank in Brisbane as well as hot spots like Cairns CBD, Townsville CBD, Mackay CBD, Rockhampton CBD, Noosa, Surfers Paradise, Fortitude Valley and Brisbane CBD.

Mr Lucas said police will also be out in force on the roads conducting random breath tests.

"New Year's is a time for partying and celebrating but no-one should be under any illusion - it is also a time when public safety must come first," Mr Lucas said.

"It's everyones right to celebrate to usher in the New Year and we are determined to do everything we can to make sure everyone enjoys that right without others spoiling it"

"That's why there will be a highly visible police presence tonight, along with increased security at cab ranks and a significant Liquor Licensing presence.

"Additionally, there will be a massive boost to public transport services in and around the city and south-east to ensure people can move as quickly and as safely as possible.

"There will be about 1000 bus services across the TransLink network throughout the night.

"Queensland Rail will be running 77 additional inbound and outbound rail services, 23 to bring revellers into the city and 35 to coincide with the conclusion of fireworks displays to help get people home.

"Extra train services will run after midnight on the Beenleigh, Gold Coast, Cleveland, Ipswich, Rosewood, Caboolture, Nambour, Shorncliffe and Ferny Grove lines."

"The critical message here is to leave the car at home and let someone else do the driving,"

As well, liquor compliance officers will be out in force throughout Queensland ensuring safety at licensed venues.

Mr Lucas said Liquor Compliance Officers will particularly be keeping an eye out for minors at licensed premises or drinking alcohol in public places.
