The cost of a daily Zone 1 ticket will increase by 20 cents from January 1.

Minister for Public Transport Lynne Kosky announced new fares for Melbourne's metropolitan public transport system in 2008.

Bulk purchase and periodical tickets such as 10 x 2 hour and monthly tickets will increase by between 10? and 80? a week, while V/Line fares will go up by 2.1%.

Ms Kosky said the average fare for travel on trains, trains and buses would rise by 2.1% from January 1 next year, in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase for Melbourne in the 12 months to the end of the September quarter.

A new 5 x Weekend Daily Metcard will be sold from April that will allow people to buy five days of Saturday and Sunday travel on the one Metcard, saving time and money, she said.

5 x Weekend Daily card holders are entitled to five days of unlimited weekend travel anywhere on the metropolitan network for $14.50, which works out to $2.90 a day.

Sunday Saver tickets will go up slightly in price from $2.50 to $2.90 - the first price increase since the fare was announced in December 2004.
