Come and see the rail thing - adventure trail a reality

Australia's longest continuous hiking, cycling and horse riding trail is now a reality with completion of the final stage of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail through scenic South-East Queensland.

Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden said the Palaszczuk Government had contributed $1.8 million towards works to complete the final link of the rail trail between Toogoolawah and Moore.

"This completes a long-standing vision for a continuous 161 kilometre trail delivering a unique and exciting recreational experience for bushwalkers, cyclists and horse riders," Mr Madden said.

"This innovative recreational trail follows the disused Brisbane Valley rail corridor from Wulkuraka, west of Ipswich, to Yarraman, west of Kilcoy.

"Thanks to the imagination and commitment of the local community and the support of all three levels of government, we now have a trail which would rival the Otago Rail Trail in New Zealand and the Great Victorian Rail Trail in Victoria."

Assistant Minister for State Development Julieanne Gilbert said the funding was delivered through Transport and Main Roads, which oversaw the completion of the Toogoolawah to Moore project, as well as having responsibility for the ongoing management of the rail trail.

"Somerset Regional Council was approved $1.8 million from the Queensland Government to complete the rail trail upgrades between Toogoolawah and Moore with further federal and council contributions bringing the total project cost to $3.354 million," Ms Gilbert said.

"Project works which started in 2017, included major crossings at Ivory Creek, Emu Creek and Wallaby Creek and several road crossings across the D'Aguilar Highway and the Brisbane Valley Highway.

"Further works included various minor road and creek crossings, refurbishment of Jimmy Gully Bridge, grids, gates and signs.

"There is no question the effort and expense will be worth it for all South East Queensland, providing recreation and tourism benefits along with economic development opportunities throughout the region.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the government is committed to further develop other sections of the rail trail to ensure it is a world-class tourism asset and major drawcard for national and international visitors to the region.

"This includes a $4.5 million refurbishment of the heritage-listed Lockyer Creek Railway Bridge.

"The historic bridge is a key feature of the trail and once restored will provide an important link and further enhance this major tourist attraction for the region.''

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said Council was proud to have completed Australia's longest rail trail with this new section from Moore to Toogoolawah now open.

"The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail will be a generator of jobs across the entire 161 kilometres linking towns and benefitting business in Wulkuraka, Fernvale, Lowood, Coominya, Esk, Toogoolawah, Harlin, Moore, Linville, Benarkin, Blackbutt and Yarraman," Cr Lehmann said.

"We thank the Australian Government and Queensland Government for their financial support to Council which has helped make the 161 km trail a reality."

"Council's main objective with this project has been to increase the economic activity of Somerset, bring new business and life into the region and support active and healthy communities through outdoor activities.

"We are excited about the tourism potential that this new asset will have on our rural community and the increased employment and economic development opportunities it will create."

Media Release
Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning
The Honourable Cameron Dick

Yeppoon heritage rail precinct steams ahead

There will soon be movement at the station when the Palaszczuk Government calls for expressions of interest in the renewal of Yeppoon's heritage rail precinct this week.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the private sector should get involved in this exciting development opportunity, to be known as Station Quarter, in the heart of Yeppoon.

"I'm calling on all interested parties who have the capability and capacity to work with the State Government's specialist land use planning and property development unit, Economic Development Queensland, to unlock Yeppoon's historic past and deliver a vibrant precinct that meets market demands and local needs," Mr Dick said.

"EDQ has been working closely with the Livingstone Shire Council and the local community on the reinvigoration of the 2.4-hectare site, located in Yeppoon's central business district.

"The proposed master plan site will incorporate repurposing the heritage railway building and platform, enhancing community facilities and open spaces, and mixed-use development incorporating opportunities for residential, commercial and retail uses."

Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the station has been an important part of the community for many years and she was delighted to see the project progressing.

"People want this site to provide multiple uses, where they can spend quality time with family and friends, and tourists can relax and enjoy," Mrs Lauga said.

Thanks to the Palaszczuk Government's Buy Queensland policy this is a real opportunity for local businesses to get involved in this project.

Livingston Shire Council Mayor Bill Ludwig says the development will greatly benefit the community and deliver a long-term economic boost.

"Thanks to the fantastic support of the Queensland Government, this is yet another exciting opportunity to revitalise the local area while embracing Yeppoon's historical past," Mayor Ludwig said.

"The forthcoming project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved for our region when the State Government work hand in hand with both the council and our community."

The invitation for expressions of interest will be open from Friday 14 September 2018 and will close Monday 29 October 2018.

Interested parties can access the expression of interest documentation and register for industry briefings on the QTender (www.hpw.qld.gov.au/qtenders/) website, reference number DSDMIP-EDQ-0962-18.

Couriermail --> Council threatens fine over rail carriage

QuoteTHE Samford Valley will lose one of its curio attractions after the local council gave a businessman two weeks to remove a vintage rail carriage that was being used as an art studio.

Ven Grasso bought the Queensland Government Railways carriage almost 12 years ago and it has been used as The Art Train studio at Samford Village ever since.

He said all-up, including the initial purchase, subsequent restorations and the addition of a deck, he has spent close to $50,000 on the carriage which is from the late 1930s.

"It would make a perfect man cave. It is fully air-conditioned, new electrics, new roof and it comes with a wooden deck with wrought iron scrolls," Mr Grasso said.

The carriage is a well-known feature in Station Street, Samford Village.

It sits opposite the Samford District Historical Museum and is in the same street as The Flying Nun Café and The Store of Requirement which is better known as the Harry Potter shop.

Mr Grasso said his run-in with the Moreton Bay Regional Council started almost 12 months ago when he received a show cause notice about the legality of the passenger carriage being used as a business premises.

The issue reached a crisis point on Tuesday when council notified him he now faced a $3,500 fine.

"I've been asked to show cause on the carriage and the story is, I've been the bad boy because it is on a commercial site," he said.

"To comply, they require me to do this massive block wall for fire prevention and build an enormous ramp to allow access for people with disabilities and it's going to cost about $30,000."

Mr Grasso said local councillor Darren Grimwade had helped him buy some time to find a new owner for the carriage.

Locals have spoken of starting a petition to save keep it Samford a Facebook post that offers the passenger carriage for sale for $25,000.

Mr Grimwade told The Courier-Mail that the carriage could stay providing it was made compliant with their building codes to make it an approved structure.

He said that unfortunately the carriage held no historical significance for the local Samford area.

"It's been going on for 12 months after council investigated a complaint from a resident," he said.

"He was told this week he would be fined $3,500...and he has a two weeks grace period to remove the carriage and hold the fine and that's what we have done."

Mr Grasso said he bought the carriage in good faith off the Warwick Museum after being told it was a train that serviced Samford but that has since been debunked.

RAIL Back on Track commuter advocate and rail historian Robert Dow said the carriage was in "great shape" and was certainly from around the era Mr Grasso claimed.

"It could be of interest to rail enthusiasts and of interest to heritage operators depending on the state of the under train," he said.

"It certainly is an oldish carriage."

I've been shown a photo of the West Burleigh tunnel, post railway but pre highway. Was being used as a local road, it was only very short.

Sat roughly in the now southbound lanes south of Varsity Lakes.

For those that haven't heard, Qld Rail Heritage is no more, was all shut down quietly a few months ago.

SX sets are to be scrapped as too expensive to convert to wheelchair accessible.
Loco's are now out in the weather, even the Garrett has been pushed outside.
Blue Baby was all but completed, project cancelled.
No more Steam Train Sunday etc due to OHS risks being too high  :fp:
