Two teenagers have been arrested in relation to a suspicious fire that gutted Gardenvale railway station this morning causing major peak-hour delays.

The boys, both aged 15 and from Yarraville, were arrested in Melbourne's west about 3pm and are being questioned by police at Williamstown police station.

Police are still searching for a number of other people believed to have been at the station when the blaze was sparked about 5am, including a female.

The Sandringham line was shutdown by the fire but was later reopened and is expected to run as normal for the afternoon commute.

Up to 55 firefighters battled the fire for nearly an hour as it engulfed a wooden station building, near Brighton.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Mick Coombs ssaid the fire had caused about $100,000 damage.

The unmanned Gardenvale station is in Metro ticket zone one and has been serving commuters in the bayside suburb of Brighton since 1906.  It is about 10 kilometres from the city.

Police are urging anyone who was at the railway station at the time of the fire or has any information regarding the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to  www.crimestoppers.com.au.
