oh wow, at 8:30 last night two guys entered the rail yards at tennyson with the intention of doing graffiti and the 26 year old got suffered an electric shock. apparently he had deep burns to 90% of his body. that should be fatal. i cant see any info on whether he is still alive or not, but last i heard he was at the royal brisbane and womens hospital, and his 19 year old accomplice was assisting police.

while i disagree with their intention to graffiti rail property, its tragic that this has happened, and while i hope the dude is ok, i can see how a human can survive burns that horrific. not to mention the high voltage that went through his body would most likely have carried a huge current. from what i remember of high school physics, its not the volts that kill you, its the amps. at the risk of sounding heartless, i hope this serves as a deterrent for people wishing to damage property, else they suffer a similar fate. i hope this poor dude pulls through for his sake. 26 is still really young. i just dont see how one can survive with burns to 90% of their body though....

This won't be a deterrent in the very slightest bit even if he dies. It's happened before and it will happen again. The smarter/usual vandals out there know the limits of where they can and can't go especially not to stand on top and touch the overhead wires even if an electric loco hasn't been there in years. If they target the tops of freight trains/stand on top for the view or whatever reason they usually do it in unwired yards or unwired sidings as they know that you don't have to touch the wires for a little bit of electrocution.

he has paid the ultimate price, which was expected with the degree of injuries he sustained. i think it is incredibly tragic that another young life has been unnecessarily cut short, regardless of what he was doing. i presume the 19 year old mate will be suffering post traumatic stress now after seeing his accomplice set on fire like that. i also feel for the rail worker and emergency response crews who attended the scene and the family of the deceased. what started out to them as innocent fun has turned to tragedy.

i agree it probably wont serve as a warning, but it would be nice (for want of a better word) if it did.

Was approached on the platform last week by Q and A Market Research asking me to participate in SEQ Travel Survey of customer satisfaction with TransLink operations.   Had my say.   :bna:  :is-

Followed the 344 last night. It took a while to over take it as it never stopped but when I finally did there was 1 passenger on it. It was good to see as we all know it would have been packed to the rafters once it got to Aspley because the Aspley to Carseldine route really needs the 6bph of the 340 buz, 341 and the 344 during peak hour.  :clp: :clp:

I caught the 2:14 train (from Cannon Hill to Northgate) at Park Road today. Due to "late running" it was announced approaching Roma Street that it would become a Doomben train. I got off at Central as advised and the next train to Shorncliffe was 14 minutes away and to Northgate was a Caboolture train in 8 minutes. I do not know if that Northgate train started at Roma Street or was just cancelled.

Also, a girl at Park Road asked the guard if he had a light.  :P He just told her she was not allowed to smoke on the platform. :-t

Healthy passenger numbers on the Gympielander as it headed south through Cooroy at 2.05pm today (Friday).  Seemed to be a few people looking to make a weekend in Brisbane or do their Xmas shopping there.  The ICE had a crew of four -- three in the driver cabin and guard at the rear.

Queensland tennis legend honoured

    Published: 09 January 2015

Sporting tennis legend Rod Laver has been recognised ahead of the Brisbane International.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson joined Assistant Minister for Public Transport Steve Minnikin and Rod Laver to name a Yeerongpilly footbridge in the tennis legend's honour.

"I'm proud to be here today to unveil two new plaques recognising the sporting legend as it is important to acknowledge the extraordinary achievements of our fellow Queenslanders," Mr Emerson said.

"Now when tennis fans are travelling across the popular bridge to get to the Queensland Tennis Centre from Yeerongpilly train station they can remember a sporting hero.

"I'm thrilled Rod could visit our city ahead of the Brisbane International to accept this tribute, which will serve as a permanent reminder of his outstanding achievements.

"Australia already pays homage to the legendary tennis player through Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne and a hall in his home town, and we're pleased we can now honour him here in Brisbane."

Mr Minnikin said the idea had been championed by Brisbane Tennis Trail Advocate Peter Rasey.

"Mr Rasey is a tireless volunteer in the community who came to me with the idea of fittingly naming the footbridge as he felt it was important to bring Rod Laver's name back to Queensland," Mr Minnikin said.

"The footbridge's name now heightens its significance to local and visiting tennis enthusiasts, with the original design based on the herringbone sole pattern used on traditional tennis shoes.

"The pattern across the bridge replicates the sole pattern from a Dunlop volley tennis shoe, worn by the likes of Rod Laver among others in his generation."

Mr Laver, who was born in Rockhampton, dominated the tennis circuit in the 1960s, winning 17 of his 20 titles in this decade.

He became the only player to win the Grand Slam twice and also won the first Open Wimbledon in 1968 and the first Australian Open in 1969.

To complement the renamed bridge's new plaque, a larger sign to clearly indicate the bridge's new name to passing motorists on Fairfield Road will also be installed on the footbridge later this year.

Steams beats electric rail

The Gympielander was late into Gympie today, running about 25 minutes late.  Very good number of passengers on board - about 60.  Passengers said the train was delayed at about five locations on the way up.  By way of contrast, the special '150 years' steam train was due in at 2.15pm, but arrived about 1.50pm to good crowd on the platform.  Market stalls had been set up along the platform.  Steam train passengers will overnight in Maryborough.

I think the good ol' ICE had another ATP problem, as well as signalling issues around Cooroy. Unsure what else delayed it though!

Bob often likes to have a go at Darra's platform usage but the problem doesn't stop there. Later at night at Indooroopilly the inbound trains are on platform 2; outbound on 3.

You betcha there are people running.

Up-up-down-down is a million times better than up-down-up-down, but my goodness there need to be big permanent signs.

To be fair, that's only a temporary thing while Milton P1 is closed. Still needs proper signage etc of course!

There isn't signage? There is signage at Toowong, however it is no larger than a laminated A3 sheet of paper in about two locations. Given how ingrained it is in people to use Platform 1, it really should be a lot larger (as in, a giant ad-size board above the stairs).
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

aldonius

There's some signage. I saw some laminated paper signs Lambert/Coonan corner entrance, and of course the LED strip signage, but the message still isn't getting through to everyone. It's not critical by any means, wouldn't be more than a couple of people out of 20-ish switching, but still. Not working perfectly.

brissypete

Many people just dont read signs, just see how many people walk past multiple trackwork signs to wait for trains that arent coming.  Ive often gone and told people and they say they didnt see the signs!

I've noticed that Mayne control has been terminating the off-peak Nambour trains (at least the 12:30pm arrival) at Roma Street Platform 10 and turning those trains back to Nambour on the same platform (forming the 1pm Nambour outbound).  I just got off the 12:30pm arrival and had to touch off at the external reader on Platform 10

Have they been doing this for a while? or was this just a 'today' only situation.

Normally the ex-Nambour off-peak (and some peak) arrivals terminate at Platform 8, then uses a siding somewhere on the Ekka loop to turn back.

I saw a nambour train at platform 10 this morning, just as the ipswich train I was on left platform 8 at about 8:30am.

They usually terminate on platform 8 but using platform 10 is not uncommon recently

Inspection vehicle (small truck on railway wheels) made a run along the NCL through the Noosa Hinterland yesterday lunchtime, checking track.  Driver stopped at Pomona, where the railway subway floods.  Top of water about 2m below track, but it was obvious that the water backed up against the railway embankment, back towards town.  Part of station fence surrounds pushed over by force of water.  Those seven temporary railway stations with plywood platforms will be a bit spongy and will require some maintenance after Marcia blew through.

Yo. Queensland Rail advised yesterday line closed from Gympie to Rockhampton, inspections being carried out.  Hopefully open soon.

A lot of cars sighted doing laps of the Landsborough station car park and surrounding streets this morning.  Also for a change, parking inspectors where actually out early in the main street (instead of middle of the day), which I'm assuming to stop people from parking on in front of the shops on the main street (where there is a 2 hour zone applied).

^ That second Landsborough station car park is needed.  Not sure what priority is has under ALP.  Mr Wellington has only got to express his displeasure for work to be done.  Nambour disability facilities and extra parking there would come first though, as those plans are drawn up.

Also, let's not forget that Mr Wellington's electorate extends up to Cooroy, so improvements between Nambour and Cooroy could be on the cards in future years, maybe not now, as the government has little flexibility on major infrastructure costs.  Priority must continue to be on duplication south of Nambour.

brissypete

Agree with Beenleigh line early running, it happens a bit during the day as well.  I submitted feedback to translink and one response was they shouldnt leave early and another said it is recommended for pax to be at stop 5 mins early.

petey3801

While i'm certainly not condoning leaving early, the timetable has a lot to answer for, especially on the Beenleigh line. I've said this a few times before, but it is an OK peak timetable, but an absolutely horrible off-peak timetable. The fact that I have departed Beenleigh 10mins late (due to disturbances etc) at night, but back on time before Park Road speaks volumes as to just how much fat is in that timetable!
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

SurfRail

The turnback arrangements at Beenleigh are horrible.  It's a slow dance:

- Up Beenleigh train arrives and terminates on platform 1
- Down Airport train passes through platform 2
- Down Ferny Grove train leaves the turnback and enters platform 2
- Terminated Beenleigh train enters the turnback
- Up Gold Coast train passes through platform 1
- Repeat

There was a 3-car IMU charter from Roma Street to Landsborough on Sunday morning.  From the looks of the pics (still dark at Roma Street), it looks like it left around before or on the 5am mark.

What about better bus connections (e.g. split 615 into two or three routes)? Paid parking? CAMCOS?

Anecdotally, my dad told me that after expandinding the car park at Berowra station the parking in surrounding streets has gotten worse as it encouraged more people to drive to the station.
