That is rather confusing, it says " all trains between Dutton Park and Varsity Lakes will be replaced by buses in both directions". Too bad if you lived at Varsity Lakes and didn't realise that the bus bit doesn't apply to you  ;)

Yes, the key part of that sentence was the little add on "at most locations". While Varsity Lakes might not be as bad as there are 3 bus routes between VL and Robina and its the end of the line, its the stations in the middle that I think are shockers. It seems you need to pretty much do a round trip via the city to get onto a bus to take you south, or to any other train station on the Beenleigh/GC lines.

South Brisbane station upgrade

WhereSouth Brisbane station
Station closure31 October - 9 December 2011
ContactPhone: 1800 525 863
Email: stationupgrades@qr.com.au

What is the South Brisbane station upgrade project?
Queensland Rail, in partnership with TransLink, is delivering the City Network Station Upgrade Program to improve station facilities across 50 stations within the City network. The South Brisbane station upgrade is part of a joint Queensland Rail and TransLink initiative to improve and restore the heritage-listed station and improve access and facilities for our customers.

South Brisbane station is an important hub in South East Queensland's rail network and provides an important station for regular commuters and those visiting Brisbane's cultural precinct.

Built in 1891, the station has significant historic value and is listed on the State Heritage Register.

If you'd like to learn more about the South Brisbane station upgrade, please visit Queensland Rail's project webpage.

Station closure - 31 October to 9 December 2011

Due to the extent of the construction works that will be undertaken, which includes structural maintenance and platform raising, the station must be closed to ensure everyone's safety.

By closing the station, we can deliver important key improvements to the station in time for the busy holiday period.

Train services will still be able to pass through the station, but will not be stopping at the platform.

Alternative transport

The station closure will only affect customers wanting to get on or off at South Brisbane station, not those travelling through the station.

If you want to go to South Brisbane station you can either:

catch your normal train service and touch off at South Bank station, then connect to Queensland Rail's complementary shuttle bus service to South Brisbane station
catch your normal train service and touch off at Roma Street station, then catch a bus from Roma Street busway station platform 2 to Cultural Centre busway station (a short walk from South Brisbane station).
Please remember to always touch on and touch off when you start and finish your journey.

More information on go card and the transfer rules.

For more information on planning your journey, please use the journey planner.

What will the station upgrade involve?

The South Brisbane station upgrade will restore and preserve the heritage-listed building, improve station access for people with a disability, and enhance customer facilities.

Improvements to station access will include:

  • a new accessible ticket office window
  • raising the height of platform one
  • a new accessible toilet.

General station improvements will include:

  • new electronic passenger information display screens
  • additional CCTV security
  • refurbishment of existing toilets
  • refurbishment of the subway with energy efficient lighting, new cladding, floor and ceiling finishes.

Improvements to preserve the heritage-listed building will include:

  • paint removal and restoration of the masonry and facade of the building
  • restoration of heritage furniture, fascias and awnings.

We appreciate your patience during the station closure.

Am becoming busy as heck as I head into my final assessment weeks.  But quickly, I was caught up in that closure on the Ipswich line last weekend and after arriving in Ipswich to transfer onto a rail replacement bus there was one driver/co-ordinator ordering (confused) people to touch on at the fare gates at Ipswich station.  The gates were barricaded off so if you had to touch off after been told to touch on elsewhere, that would've been impossible to do so.  At some of the other stations you could not access the platforms to touch off, they were taped off with workers doing what they do.  I ended up staying away from him as he was blocking people from boarding the bus before they had touched on, I wandered down to another bus and he just let me on with no problems.

I thought that the rule was with rail replacement the trip was complementary and you did not have to touch on/purchase a ticket until you got to the destination from where the trains were departing from.  Can anyone confirm this?

It wouldn't surprise me if there were a number of fixed fares happening that day.

ozbob

I can see some problems.  Traditionally no one has really bothered with tickets on rail replacement, although officially tickets are required.  With go cards, often it is not possible to access the gear on rail stations because they are closed off from public access for works etc.  Also the stops may be a way from the stations as well.  Until go gear is on the buses, it is really awkward to be changing the normal practises as folks get rattled and end up with fixed fares.

How would a bus driver at Corinda know if anyone has touched on??  Hysterical .....

Also, fixed fares are NOT counted as a journey.  So this further complicates the free travel after 10 journeys as folks could be caught short as they are anticipating that their journey number 10 will give them free travel later in the day.  If journey 10 is a fixed fare then oh dear.

My own personal view and practise has been to board the bus with my go card ready to touch on (as per the translink official go card guide).  If there is no go gear, the driver just waves you on is my experience.  If I am not travelling by train then I don't touch on a railway station (as per the guide).  If TransLink want to change that then they need to be explicit in their instructions, or ensure buses have the go gear.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

Sydney has the same ridiculousness.  Rail replacement buses theoretically require you to have a valid ticket, and this is stated often but never enforced.  Bizarre.

As far as I am concerned, it is touch on and off when leaving stations.  Period.

Rail replacement buses will NEVER accept go cards, even if they are supplied by a TransLink contract operator with the equipment fitted in their fleet, such as Thompsons or Kangaroo.  Rail replacement services are not programmed in and the main objective is in moving people quickly around the disruption.

TransLink should legitimise this practice.

It does seem a bit confused. The last closure on the FG line I got caught up in, I was heading outbound and I'm pretty sure the guard told everyone to touch off at Bowen Hills. Which is certainly what everyone was doing.

Closure Sunday night Roma St-Dutton Park.

Still no info about the effect on the Cleveland line.  Will it start at Buranda?  In Sydney, they'd probably ask you to use the 111 or other bus to get there.

Dutton Park. Whenever these closures happen, the Cleveland line will always start at Dutton Park (turnback reasons).

Last time this closure was on a couple weeks back, they had Beenleigh trains continuing to Cleveland and vice versa (BNH-CVN, CVN-BNH).
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

The problem comes though is if the station is cordoned off from the public as Ipswich and Dinmore (I think from memory) was that day.  How does one touch off at that station if you can't get to it?  I'm certainly not going to wait 10 working days to get my money back from a fixed fare simply because I can't touch off at a station due to scheduled trackwork/station work.

To me, from a customer perspective, trackwork is seen as an inconvenience (although necessary).  Why should it not be simply that during trackwork days, passengers get free rail replacement bus travel and then just for them to pay the trip in once they get onto a train?

Talking more about where you are able to commence a rail journey, which is then interrupted.  If the entire Ipswich line was shut down from Roma Street and I was starting at say Redbank, I would not expect to pay any fare.  However, if the line was shut down from Darra to the City only, I would be touching off at Darra.  I doubt that you would ever be unable to touch on or touch off in this situation because you are getting off at an operational station.

Only the Cleveland line is affected.  When the line between Park Road and any point further out on the line (eg Murrarie, or the whole line) is closed, outbound trains go straight from Park Road to Dutton Park and unload/reverse there because it is operationally superior to just terminating them at Park Road.  If you are coming from Murrarie, you will be dropped off at Dutton Park to join an inbound train there.

These days, it would be superior to have the changes at Boggo Road/Park Road, but the rail bus contractors are not necessarily all qualified to use the busway.

Indeed it would.  I haven't thought about this before.  You need to be "qualified" to use the busway?

Is it possible to use Park Rd #3 and the DG for outbound trains sort of like what the weekend Shorncliffe trains do?  I guess the approach to Park Rd #3 from the north is probably unsignalled.  I suppose it isn't a big deal to turn around at Dutton Park.

Yes.  Most of the operators already are, but not all.

Set in train

Could someone please explain the planned closure Roma St to Rocklea - does that means trains are running from Rocklea to Varsity? What happens with Airtrain customers? I cannot find any mention of this on the TL website.

david

My understanding is that all trains from the Gold Coast/Beenleigh are travelling via Tennyson this weekend

QuoteTrain customers should allow up to an extra 30 minutes to travel on the Beenleigh, Gold Coast and Cleveland lines this weekend.

The Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines between Roma Street and Rocklea stations, plus the Cleveland line between Roma Street and Cannon Hill stations, will be closed on Saturday November 26 and on Sunday November 27.

TransLink spokesman Andrew Berkman said there would be changes to train services on the weekend:

Cleveland line

Buses will replace trains, stopping all stations between Central and Cannon Hill stations. Trains will run between Cannon Hill and Cleveland, as normal.

Beenleigh line:

Buses will replace trains, stopping all stations between Central and Rocklea stations. Trains will run express between Roma Street and Rocklea via the Tennyson loop, then as normal to Beenleigh.

Gold Coast line:

Buses will replace trains, stopping all stations between Roma Street and Rocklea. Trains will run express between Roma Street and Rocklea via the Tennyson loop, then as normal to Varsity Lakes.
