When I go to South Bank on weekends, I usually drive because the trip from Ipswich via public transport takes too long. However, I jumped at the opportunity of catching a direct express service to South Bank yesterday which took 11 minutes between Corinda & South Bank. I estimate that it saved at least 20 minutes each way compared to catching an all stations service & changing at Roma Street.  :-t

When I travel from Oxley to Southbank I like to hop off at Toowong and catch a citycat to southbank (easier connectivity now with 15 minute trains off peak) - or hop off at Roma street and take a walk across the Kurilpa bridge and take in the sights.

The journey time is reminiscent of what the 'Darra flyer' used to achieve.  This was the sole PM peak Ipswich line service that ran express Roma St to Darra, often catching a few out who had mistakenly boarded it for intermediate stations. It often took only 12 to 13 minutes for the run to Darra.  From memory I think it was timetabled around 14 minutes.

Indeed, but it was even  more schadenfreude in the years before the implementation of the "Darra" stop when the "Redbank" flyer used to run express from Roma Street to Redbank  ;D

Roma Street works include the points between the mains and subs and other points at South Brisbane so power and signalling will be affected as a result. Might as well close other sections to utilize the amount of downtime for services from the south and west.

Golliwog

There are a number of week night closures coming up:

Sunday 23 June Corinda-Sth Brisbane-Albion/Bowen Hills
Wednesday 19 June Milton-Sth Brisbane-Albion/Bowen Hills
Wednesday 12 June Milton-Sth Brisbane-Albion/Bowen Hills
Tuesday 11 June Bowen Hills to Ferny Grove
Monday 10 June Bowen Hills to Ferny Grove
Wednesday 5 June Milton-Sth Brisbane-Albion/Bowen Hills

Some of the Milton-Sth Brisbane-Albion/Bowen Hills closures have the Ferny Grove line being replaced with buses as well, however some have the following note:

Quote
Trains will run between Ferny Grove and Bowen Hills as scheduled then run express from Bowen Hills to South Brisbane via the Exhibition lines. Buses will operate for stations between Bowen Hills and Roma Street.
Reverse back up the subs towards Albion then forward onto the exhibition loop?
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Golliwog

The Ferny Grove line is closed this weekend. So too is the South Pine Rd level crossing at Alderley while they conduct re-surfacing works. All vehicular traffic is being instructed to detour via Wardell St. I assume there are similar queues in the opposing directions, but the traffic heading outbound led to a fairly permanent queue of traffic for the Samford-Wardell St intersection that stretched back to the South Pine-Samford Rd intersection.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

We avoided it by heading through passed Newmarket station to Webster road, no traffic at all.

That crossing was in desperate need of repair. Replacement would have better but they built that flats in the way on the southern side.

Went through again today. Traffic seemed much better. I think that they worked out if they talked to the Brisbane Traffic Control Center (can't recall the exact name, but it can manipulate most traffic lights in the Brisbane area) they could get the signal phasing changed to reduce the queuing.

The same happened in the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, they changed the lights to an "all cross at once" (like edward & adeliade st) and grouped east-west & north-south traffic and it flows heaps better.

If only the person that came up with that smart idea worked in BT instead..... ::)

It really bugs me how many intersections in the city should be like that, but aren't.

Just found this on the Translink website:

QuoteFrom first train on Saturday 31 August to last train on Sunday 1 September, tracks will be closed from Bowen Hills to the Airports, Doomben, Shorncliffe and Gympie North stations.

Be sure to plan your journey in advance and allow for extra travel time (approximately 60 minutes) due to track works.
Train replacement services

Buses will replace trains in both directions from Bowen Hills to the Domestic Airport, Doomben, Shorncliffe and Gympie North.

Two things of note:
1) Would this be the first time that a full weekend trackwork closure (or any planned trackwork closure, for that matter!) has affected Airport line trains (as in, replaced by buses from Bowen Hills)?
and 2) Wonderful timing as always with trackwork... Bridge to Brisbane is on Sunday 1st Sept...

Cup clash averted by mayor and QR

Peter Foley 3rd Sep 2013 6:00 AM

THE Queensland Cup grand final in Ipswich has been saved from a crash tackle after track repairs were called off.

The threat to the rugby league showpiece was detected by Mayor Paul Pisasale who feared a repeat of 2008 when track work on the Ipswich rail line was arranged for Ipswich Cup Day.

The Queensland Rail website listed the Ipswich line would be closed from first train to 5pm on September 29 for overhead maintenance from Redbank to Rosewood.

Thousands are expected at the Queensland Cup grand final at North Ipswich Reserve that day; many would come by train.

Mayor Pisasale called Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson yesterday and the clash was averted.

"In all fairness, the track maintenance was scheduled a long time ago and the grand final announcement was only recently," Cr Pisasale said.

"It's good to know QR and the minister came to the party when they could have been party poopers. It's good to have a minister who's an Ipswich boy."

Mr Emerson said the regular maintenance was scheduled last year but it could be rescheduled.

"Due to the scheduling of the QRL grand final and the importance of this event to Ipswich, Queensland Rail has been able to reschedule the maintenance work on the Ipswich line," he said.

"Queensland Rail CEO Glen Dawe has confirmed the work can be postponed without cost."

I have found both QR and the Minister very responsive when easily fixed concerns like this are raised - certainly more so than the former Government IMHO.

The question shouldn't have had to be asked FFS! Bridge to Brisbane is on the first Sunday of September, EVERY YEAR. It's not something that creeps up on you! There have been many, many other examples of trackwork being places on weekends of major events in the past and it's been too hard for QR to change the trackwork a few months out because it would be "too expensive", yet this one can be changed less than a month out? Something stinks here...

Shutting down basically the entire northern half of the network (apart from Ferny Grove) on Bridge to Brisbane weekend is, quite simply, ridiculous. It simply shouldn't happen. But, then again, we are in Queensland. It's just a surprise the Cleveland line wasn't included in the trackwork last weekend  :fp:

It's the same as if there was trackwork scheduled for the entire northern part of the network for Riverfire weekend. Or NYE. Quite simply, it just shouldn't happen.
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

I think QR should set the maintenance timetable and that's it. It is the responsibility of event organisers to ensure that PT is available NOT QR. There are so many different events by so many different organisations and people and locations that there are inevitably going to be clashes.

The best QR should do is release a timetable ahead of time and notify all the major event organisation companies in QLD at the start of each year.

And yet they couldn't manage to shift the northside closedown last weekend on Fathers Day and Bridge to Brisbane...

AFAIK it wasn't an option to shift it due to construction deadlines aligning together at Geebung and Morayfield (Geebung has very strict noise restrictions and heavy cranes were required to move support structures into place before work could progress any further. A good part of Saturday had a crane on the LX lifting bridge supports into place with another machine driving them deep into the ground). The inner city lines/Shorncliffe and co however? Maybe to utilize the use of the downtime on the Caboolture line closure rather than have 2 separate closures for the station and signal upgrades (pretty sure it was signal upgrades that caused the inner city lines to be closed).

FYI those interested in the Telegraph road lx removal works will also officially start this month (the major stuff that is). The land/trees has been cleared, powerlines reconfigured, gaslines moved, site offices set up etc.

petey3801

FWIW, i'm not saying the closure last weekend should have been moved, per se. I'm saying it shouldn't have been put on that weekend to start with! Bridge to Brisbane is ALWAYS on the first weekend in September! It's not like it's announced only a couple weeks in advance..

I agree that events such as concerts, shows, sporting events etc need to work around/with QR in regards to trackwork, as those events are typically ad-hoc, happen randomly etc. But there are some major events in SEQ that happen at/around the same time every year that should be worked around by QR, such as NYE, Riverfire, State of Origin (to an extent, and only when being played up here), Bridge to Brisbane, Ekka etc. These are events that draw very large crowds and happen around the same time every year. It really shouldn't be that difficult! But then I remember, it's Queensland. Of course it's difficult.. :fp:

Closure Bowen Hills/Albion to Roma St tonight (plus Darra to Richlands). I got caught out.FG trains are starting from Bowen Hills while all other northern lines are from Albion. Does anyone know where they're reversing the FG trains? Inbound terminate on P3 and continue inbound while outbound services start from P4.

Sent to all outlets:

Track closure to ruin pre - Christmas for most of the rail network

Greetings,

Major track closure is planned 14th - 15th December 2013.  Takes out all lines south and west on the network (inner sections).

Is this really necessary at this time??

See --> http://translink.com.au/travel-information/service-notices/296/details

This closure should be brought forward or postponed to January ...

Bowen Hills to Airport, Doomben, Shorncliffe, Gympie North track closure

From 2am on Saturday 1 February to the last train on Sunday 2 February, tracks will be closed between Bowen Hills, Shorncliffe, Airport, Doomben and Gympie North stations.

Be sure to plan your journey in advance and allow for extra travel time (approximately 60 minutes) due to track works.

Trains will be affected from the first service on Saturday 1 February and will return to normal from the first service on Monday 3 February.

If history of the recent northern network shutdowns are to go by, there will be separate buses for Suburban points (All stops to Strathpine, Petrie), and limited stops express for Caboolture with those going between Elimbah and Nambour changing buses at Caboolture.

If I do recall there is a separate bus for Brisbane (Roma Street) to Gympie North.  Express to Elimbah via the Bruce Highway, then all stops to Gympie North, IIRC (Vice-Versa for the Sunday inbound service).  Not sure about the Saturday inbound arrangements for Yandina-Gympie North passengers.
