Weekend works to upgrade northern train network

Thursday 22 March 2012

The Caboolture and Sunshine Coast train lines will close between Northgate and Gympie North stations from the first train on Saturday (March 24) until the final train on Sunday (March 25).

" People will be able to get to where they need to go - but travel on buses rather than trains," Mr Berkman said.

"The train departing Roma Street station at 1.03am on Saturday morning will be replaced by buses between Petrie and Caboolture stations.

"NightLink trains on the Caboolture line will also be replaced by buses from Northgate station."

The South Pine Road level crossing at Strathpine train station will also be closed on the weekend. Motorists should use the Mott Street underpass or the Kremzow Road overpass during this closure.

Access to Caboolture train station including the overpass will be restricted on Sunday (March 25).

Trains on both lines will resume as normal from first services on Monday morning (March 26).

Ipswich show is on this weekend, and of course a track closure

Greetings,

The Ipswich show is on this coming weekend
THE IPSWICH SHOW 18th, 19th, & 20th May 2012  http://ipswichshow.com.au/

And of course there is a track closure from Corinda to Rosewood, to just rub it in further, and make it difficult for punters to get to and from Ipswich.

Track closure --> http://translink.com.au/travel-information/service-updates/bulletin/1333498768

Punters were promised that track closures would be infrequent and timed not to clash with significant community events.  Fat chance hey?

This is track closure  number 13 or 14 in 16 months or so.

Hopeless!

Best wishes

Yep, it is all too hard clearly.  Five years on from ruining the Oxley street fair they continue to excel in mediocrity!!

Guess they will close the entire network for RiverFire at this rate ...

Re: Ipswich show is on this weekend, and of course a track closure

Greetings,

How about publishing track closures in advance.  The much maligned CityRail network in Sydney at least puts up a decent notification of upcoming track closures.

E.g. --> http://www.cityrail.info/service_updates/trackwork/trackwork_calendar.pdf

Organisations that claim to be customer focussed really need to be customer focussed.

This is just another example of the lack of timely and transparent information made publicly available in Queensland.

Ipswich Show crowds to be hit by train line closure over the weekend

QuoteIpswich Show crowds to be hit by train line closure over the weekend

    by: Jane Chudleigh, Ipswich News
    From: Quest Newspapers
    May 16, 2012 10:49AM

Trains on the Ipswich line will be shut down for the entire weekend as thousands of visitors travel to the Ipswich Show.

Travel plans could be thrown into disarray as Translink advises passengers to allow up to an hour extra travel time as buses replace services in both directions.

There will be no services between Corinda and Rosewood from 8pm Friday until services return to normal Monday morning.

The Ipswich Show, which can attract up to 25,000 people, is not the only major event to be hit with coinciding track closures. In 2011, visitors to the Ipswich 300 and Queensland Roar's match against an Ipswich invitational side faced travel delays.

Ipswich Show Society president Marcia Cruickshank said she had not been aware of the weekend track closures.

She said the Show Society operated a shuttle bus service from Ipswich Station to the showgrounds, and would look at whether that needed to be adapted.

Translink advised the closure was to allow for Origin Alliance works between Goodna and Dinmore, track reconditioning at Thagoona and maintenance between Corinda and Rosewood.

Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said there should be reasonable notice if track works coincided with Ipswich's major events.

He said even Sydney's maligned CityRail network posted upcoming track closures six months in advance.

"We think that's a great community benefit because it flags issues where perhaps organisers of a key event, such as the Ipswich Cup, could get back and say `hold on, any chance of moving that weekend'. We have been highlighting this for years, and we hope there could be some kind of community database set up,'' Mr Dow said.

Daughter number one, who is now working in the US of A, came home for a family event last year for a week.

My daughter has previously lived at Goodna for a number of years, regular rail user and had put up with the years of track closures that the Ippy has had.

Yes, you guessed it, the one weekend she was back in Oz there was a track closure!

At least if we had a decent advance time line for track closures one could perhaps time visits better as well.  LOL

Perhaps this will improve under the new regime.  Notice how a month's notice has been given of the Northern Busway changes, which is good.

No idea, but the usual few weeks.  We need a proper public  list ala CityRail that people can work from 6 months out at a minimum.  And these things are planned in those time frames.  There will always be unexpected closures but most are planned up to a year out.

Bit disconcerting that the Show organiser didn't know about the closure.  This indicates that the present information is not getting through, or were they even consulted?

Track closures on the Ippy is a very sensitive issue, because of the years of clashing closures  in past years with the few significant community events that Ipswich has.

Interesting blog comments on the article at Couriermail Quest  --> here!

The other thing which is odd about this closure is the that the last UP Ippy train leaves Central at 6.34pm Friday, last UP Richlands at 6.49pm and, last Rosewood at 5.58pm.  This is crazy.  There are still very significant pax loads at those times.

It does seem that this closure is designed to cause the maximum inconvenience to the maximum number of pax.

In short, most unsatisfactory at a number of levels.

Around 5 years when we had the great Oxley Fair ruination due to a track closure, the then transport minister assured me that a community database would be set up to avoid these sort of occurrences.  Hello?  Where is it??  We have been reminding them for the past 5 years and I have raised the issue with the authorities many times.  The community is just ignored.

Trains a no-show for show weekend

QuoteTrains a no-show for show weekend

Kieran Banks | 17th May 2012 4:55 AM

THE Ipswich train line will be shut down this weekend for track maintenance, leaving commuters heading to the Ipswich Show to rearrange their travel plans.

The latest closure will be the 14th in the past 16 months and has angered Ipswich Show Society president Marcia Cruickshank and Mayor Paul Pisasale.

Queensland Rail services will be closed from 8pm tomorrow night till Monday morning and replaced by buses.

Preparations are in full swing with show organisers working 15-hour days this week putting up more than 300 exhibits.

Premier Campbell Newman will officially open the show, which is expected to attract more than 25,000 patrons. Mrs Cruickshank said the line closure was news she could do without.

The show society provides a shuttle bus from Ipswich station to the showgrounds and hopes it won't dampen the show's appeal.

"We always have our own shuttle bus from the train station to the showgrounds. We are disappointed because we weren't notified. I really think the something is drastically wrong there," she said.

Cr Paul Pisasale was extremely disappointed the closure could be planned during such an important community event.

"I just could not believe that they would close the track. There is no consideration. Just to look at our events calendar," he said.

"What about all the people from Goodna who come all the way along the train line and rely on the line for the show?

"It's just not on. I'm so disappointed and I will be taking it up with the premier."

A QR spokesman said they tried to avoid obvious clashes, but the work had required significant forward planning and was scheduled months in advance.

QR is advising commuters to allow an extra hour for travel.

Who should tell whom as to when closures occur?

Is it the community organisations that need to let QR know when their events are on, or is QR supposed to somehow find out by other means?
Perhaps it would a good idea if all of the Councils submitted their dates for major events to QR.
Then it could all be collated and plans made with these events in mind.

Queensland Rail should not have to work around events. There are many events and organisations, there is only one QR. QR should set a regular maintainence timetable - I'm not even sure why variable scheduling is required unless emergency works are required. These should be same weekends every year if possible and published 6-12 months in advance so that organisations can check and make sure that their event falls on a different day to a closure.

Not sure that is possible TT, wouldn't there be maintenance issues that signal (no pun intended) issues needing to be addressed on an ad hoc basis?
Not necessarily a regular predictable event.

#Metro

I don't agree.

Let's say maintainence needs to be done on Line X four times per year.

We could monitor the line and then schedule maintainence on it when required. Or we could just announce that maintenance will be done on the line on weekend X of January, April, July, October and then do whatever is required then.

A bit like a bus schedule really. You could try to predict 'demand' and schedule services to model it closely or you could just ignore everything and just run a service every 15 minutes no matter what.

In emergency situations (signal failure or whatnot) or special circumstances (i.e. diamond crossover replacement at Roma Street) sure there might have to be the odd random shutdown, but the issue here is regularity and predictability. People need certainty to be able to plan things. A regular shutdown timetable does this. I'm sure QR has some kind of system for this but long weekends should be considered for shutdowns as more work can be done for less disruption.

Exactly.  Ipswich Cup is on 16th June, still not clear if there will be a track closure?

CityRail can  do it, that is a planned closure timetable 6 months out. That is what is needed simple.  That way any significant clashes can be identified before it is too late and either event changed or closure moved.  It is not rocket science but Communication 101.

There will always be the odd urgent closure, but the vast majority of closures are planned 6 to 12 months out.

Too costly to cancel shut down

QuoteToo costly to cancel shut down

Rae Wilson | 18th May 2012 4:58 AM

RESCHEDULING planned rail track maintenance to avoid clashing with the Ipswich Show would cost taxpayers $370,000.

Transport Minister Scott Emerson told parliament yesterday he was "disappointed" the Ipswich train line would be shut down the same weekend as the Ipswich Show, which has run since 1866.

But he said the cost to taxpayers was too great to reschedule the track work at this "late stage".

He blamed the previous government for setting down the scheduled maintenance, which would affect many of the 25,000 patrons who planned to commute, in January before he became minister.

Mr Emerson said as someone born at Ipswich he found it extraordinary the last transport minister allowed this to occur.

As reported in The Queensland Times yesterday, the latest closure will be the 14th in the past 16 months and has angered the Ipswich Show Society and Ipswich City Council. Queensland Rail services will be closed from 8pm tonight until Monday morning and replaced by buses.

The show society provides a shuttle bus from Ipswich station to the showgrounds and hopes it won't dampen the show's appeal.

Re: Ipswich show is on this weekend, and of course a track closure

Greetings,

The upset with the closure of the railway line from Corinda to Rosewood this weekend and clashing with the Ipswich Show is easily avoided.

As pointed out earlier in the week if an advance list of planned track closures was made available publicly at least six months ahead, this would help identify any significant issues ahead of time and perhaps allow for an alternative date for clashing event or track closure.

An example of advanced notice of track closures is here  http://www.cityrail.info/service_updates/trackwork/trackwork_calendar.pdf   Sydney's CityRail

It is time that this issue was put to bed.  We have been highlighting the issue and solutions for 5 years now.  The community is tired of being ignored and treated poorly.

It is not rocket science.

Best wishes

Re: Ipswich show is on this weekend, and of course a track closure

Greetings,

How about publishing track closures in advance.  The much maligned CityRail network in Sydney at least puts up a decent notification of upcoming track closures.

E.g. --> http://www.cityrail.info/service_updates/trackwork/trackwork_calendar.pdf

Organisations that claim to be customer focussed really need to be customer focussed.

This is just another example of the lack of timely and transparent information made publicly available in Queensland.

Best wishes
Robert

Ipswich show is on this weekend, and of course a track closure

Greetings,

The Ipswich show is on this coming weekend
THE IPSWICH SHOW 18th, 19th, & 20th May 2012  http://ipswichshow.com.au/

And of course there is a track closure from Corinda to Rosewood, to just rub it in further, and make it difficult for punters to get to and from Ipswich.

Track closure --> http://translink.com.au/travel-information/service-updates/bulletin/1333498768

Punters were promised that track closures would be infrequent and timed not to clash with significant community events.  Fat chance hey?

This is track closure  number 13 or 14 in 16 months or so.

Hopeless!

Best wishes
Robert

Parramatta has a train every 10 minutes?  Used to until the mid-2000s service cuts.
