When was the power surge?  I don't remember hearing about that.  Another week on the temporary fixes would be too much of a risk in their judgement, I take it.

When the clamp failed at Milton, the live wire hit the rail and cooked a fair bit of gear as I understand it ...

Yep. Track circuits took the brunt of it. Very lucky that no one was on the tracks in that area.

Fares_Fair

Indeed, it could have been much worse with potential for loss of life, unless there is some kind of emergency earthing along various points.

The whole track is the earthing point....

Pretty sure when wires fall/come into contact with something they also deenergise before reenergising themselves after xx seconds.

Was this always planned for Sat morning?  I have a memory of Fri evening.

Not cancelling the nightlink trains seems to forgo a few hours of possible work.

Can't recall, however it would be hard to come up with a more disruptive track closure than this one.  I think it reflects a growing attitude by railway operators all over, punters don't really matter much it seems.  The timing is most unfortunate in the election context, this will be more grist for mill with respect to  dissatisfaction with public transport.  Thousands will be caught out by this one.

If they are doing planned core works I don't see a problem with shutting down other lines to maximise the available downtime. Yes, it might annoy some people but it saves having two different closures. Try looking at the tube in the UK. Name a weekend where there hasn't been a line shut for maintainence :P Its amusing that the BT article states that they are removing vegitation in the area considering a branch fell on the OH and tripped the power resulting in a signal fault earlier in the week.

ozbob

I see a  problem. The fools still have not got a clear ticketing policy for the shutdowns. We never had these constant closures once, work was done around the clock constantly, and railways prided themselves with the ability to maintain services. I have noticed some track walkers of late out and about as well, maybe some of the well practised procedures of the past are making a come back.

Another closure on the Ippy April 14.  That makes our three for the year hey?  No more?  LOL

Hmm, so this is a first to close Murrarie-Yeerongpilly-Roma St & Roma St-Corinda?  It is highly undesirable doing it in this way.  Much better to have trains running through Dutton Park<->Buranda as you can interchange at Buranda for regular buses and use the Tennyson loop.  And vice versa with Milton closures.

Exactly, it just seems the impacts of closures get progressively worse.  I can't recall this particular pattern of closure happening before.

What I mean is that the tracks and signals are undisturbed, only the overhead is switched off.

With the new design of the closures, the Dual Gauge is considered a seperate line to the suburbans, so the freighters would still be able to run, just at reduced capacity (or tidal flow type movements). Same when the Dutton Park - Varsity lakes closures are on, the dual gauge line is still operational.
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

That being the case would it not be reasonable to have the overhead configured so that the DG line could be isolated from the NG lines thus enabling the operation of services from Beenleigh and the Gold Coast through to South Brisbane rather than to Yeeroongpilly.

You lost me here.  I'm sure the overhead on the DG is switched off also.

We're just speculating on the work they are doing.  Perhaps the tracks between Park Rd & Sth Brisbane have been disturbed.

It would be logical for the sake of redundency to have the power circuts for the DG between South Brisbane and Yeeroongpilly seperate, and the section between theSouth Brisbane and the subs at Roma Street West as a seperate circut also, this would give the capability of still operating trains in the event of a power outage.
It would require the instalation of perhaps seven overhead isolating sections and two circut breakers, less than what was the cost of the last overhead meltdown in the terms of farebox revenue alone..

somebody

So that passenger trains can run from Murrarie to Corinda via Tennyson on the DG?  I don't see the value.

More important would be separation of the Corinda-Milton section from the Sth Brisbane-Yeerongpilly section.  I don't know why this wouldn't exist.

somebody

Where is the neutral section between Roma St and Milton/Sth Brisbane?  Logic would suggest it should be south/west of the pointwork.

That's not actually possible as the dual gauge is not electrified between the Park Road flyover and the port.

I think mufreight was talking about running trains express from Yeerongpilly to South Brisbane.  In the circumstances, that appears quite impractical, and may in fact be impossible depending on what work is being done.

Simon, both netural sections are located in the area of the tunnel enterance towards South Brisbane and the overhead road bridge towards Milton. If you look on nearmap during the floods you might be able to see the small yellow....... black rectangle boxes beside the rails.

Ok, so that's not a reason why via Indooroopilly would need to close simultaneously with via Sth Brisbane.

Is there another?

Vegitation removal, overhead inspections/tightening cables and cleaning of the corridor is happening between Roma Street-Milton. Wouldn't suprise me if its continued along or to other parts of the entire corridors along with any work being needed at Towoong and other small jobs that could be put in the window.

Excellent day to have a major track closure, voting day.  Brainless ...

The one day when the entire community needs to get around.

And if the election was close I have no doubt that Queensland Rail would have been directed to keep all lines open tomorrow.  No doubt at all.

And before someone says ' can't change the dates of track closures '  I say BULLDUST, they have done it many times before because of weather or other changing priorities.
