612 ABC Brisbane Breakfast segment --> Airline passengers stranded on tarmac at Brisbane airport

Comment made to clarify further on the blog.

QuoteIf I may just expand a little on the hanger suggestion.  A large hanger adjacent to terminals, connected by walkways/paths with overhead protection could allow planes to enter, be unloaded safely during adverse weather events such as lightening. Once unloaded plane then moves out allowing the next plane to be unloaded and so forth.  This would be better than passengers sitting on planes for hours.

Incorporating such a structure would be an additional cost but surely the cost of the disruptions in the longer term would be more?

Adverse weather events are becoming more frequent.

A pointless exercise to be sure. How often are passengers stranded like this and for how long? The answer is not much on both accounts is my bet!

Delays are frequent particularly in storm season.  Not much point in building new hangars I agree but when there are new terminals constructed extending an apron shelter out from the terminal would not be a great additional expenditure.  This would give all weather loading and unloading capability.

definently especially at brisbane domestic where as soon as begins to sprinkle the baggage handlers run for cover
"Where else but Queensland?"

I don't blame the ground staff!! there's no way I would want to work outside whilst lightening strikes all around. The rules regarding staff working during inclement weather are there to protect workers and are born through past experiance! So all those whingers that were crying foul on Monday night need to have a good hard look at themselves...
