PASSENGERS on a packed peak-hour train have had to be escorted from the locomotive after it derailed at Central Station in Brisbane this morning.
A spokeswoman for Queensland Rail said the Cleveland line service was entering the station at about 10km/hr when a wheel on the second last carriage derailed about 8.15am.

She said the passengers were taken off the train and put on other services, and no one was injured.

"QR is investigating the cause of a minor derailment to the carriage of a train on the Cleveland line earlier today,?? she said.

"The driver and guard on board the train escorted passengers through the front entrance of each three carriage train set to ensure their safety.''

"Trains were diverted to other platforms at Central Station, and customers experienced delays of up to 10 minutes as speed restrictions were enforced to ensure safety.''

QR is currently trying to re-rail the locomotive, which is blocking Platform 4 of the station.

It is the second derailment in a year for QR's Citytrain passenger service.

Rail services were disrupted in Brisbane this morning when a suburban train derailed near Central Station.

Queensland Rail recovery crews worked to put the Cleveland line train back on its tracks after it derailed around 8am.

No one was injured.

A QR spokeswoman said a bogie (or chassis) on the second last carriage of a train derailed as the train was approaching Platform Four at Central Station.

The train, which was travelling to Bowen Hills, was moving at no more than 10km/h at the time of the incident.

The driver and guard on board the train escorted passengers out of the train.

"Trains were diverted to other platforms at Central Station, and customers experienced delays of up to 10 minutes as speed restrictions were enforced to ensure safety," the spokeswoman said.

QR is investigating whether any damage was caused to the train and track.

i was on the last carrige of this service and there was no panic as the courier mail is implying. The guard calmly said to get off the train and transfer to the airport service.

Did the bogey derail at the points or did it just somehow jump off the tracks?

Train derailment raises maintenance questions

A train derailment near Central Station in Brisbane has raised questions about the state of maintenance on the passenger rail network, the State Opposition said today.

Shadow Transport Minister Fiona Simpson said the rail passenger network was running close to capacity with new trains only replacing trains long over due for maintenance.

?Premier Anna Bligh is keen to look at what Queensland Rail assets she can flog off, but her Labor Government has taken its eye off the ball on the basics like ensuring tracks and trains are properly maintained,? he said.

?The train today derailed at an estimated 10 kilometres per hour. That is an indictment of our track network.

?It?s about time the Bligh Labor Government started focussing more on delivering core services properly, and less on spinning about their unpopular fire sale of assets.?

Brisbane rail network slammed after derailment

Comment is being sought from Transport Minister Rachel Nolan.

Sounds like it has been a horror week for QR. This incident plus 3 incidents two requiring buses to be bought in on the Ipswich line in the last week and half. These included loss of power twice. Apparently the second time it was actually SEQEBs (electricity board) fault. I tend to agree that there are major problems or that perhaps what my QR customers at work are saying is correct. The installation of the new line to springfield will result in power failures untill the new line is complete. That is two years of power failures.

Train derailment raises maintenance questions

A train derailment near Central Station in Brisbane this month has raised questions about the state of maintenance on the passenger rail network.

The rail passenger network is running close to capacity with new trains mainly replacing those long over due for maintenance. The train derailed at an estimated 10 kilometres per hour.

With the Bligh Government pushing ahead with further structural changes in the rail ownership network (Deloitte?s are currently reviewing Q.R. Passenger), as part of the proposed asset sales, concerns are being highlighted that this could mask rather than fix emerging maintenance issues.
