TWO buses have collided in Brisbane's inner-city, causing peak-hour traffic woes.

The incident occurred about 5.30pm at the corner of George and Elizabeth streets.

Police have said no one was badly injured in the collision and all traffic is being diverted down Elizabeth St until the buses can be removed.

Did it say for southbound routes or northbound ones?

Also, I don't recall the words Drama Queen being used. Also, I remember writing up here previously during one of the previous congestion delays with the busway of the southbound queue reaching back through the traffic lights in QSBS, so this isn't the first time this has happened.

Been warning a while, bring on Cross River Rail, but we need to increase out of peak train frequency and give folks real options.

The bus system is breaking down ...  but we knew that, and I would suggest so do others, but they pretend .. and pretend .... all is 'world class' ... lol

Surprise!
I was at the Cultural Centre around 5:30pm.  I must say, there wasn't any real congestion at Grey St or the Melbourne St portal, the problem was the Cultural Centre platform.  I think it is about time that a procedure of passing other buses to serve the Cultural Centre was instituted. Perhaps only if there are two free spots, but still, the current procedures are a bit weak.

I still think a Cultural Centre platform 3 has worthy benefits - it would also reduce congestion here as well as speed things up at the Melbourne St portal and at Merivale St.

With all the buses and pedestrians there.  Does that make it a bad record relatively speaking?

HappyTrainGuy

I say its a good record. The amount of stupid things I have seen gone on at that intersection amazes me that its such a low number. Last year I wanted to belt the hell out of a couple people that I saw so they would wake up and realise what the heck they were doing and that was within 30 minutes standing on the bridge outside QPAC hahaha.

Golliwog

Appeared to be a motor cyclist not a pedestrian. I was nearly on the bus that was involved. Instead, my bus and many others spent ~30 minutes waiting in the tunnel heading inbound. Only got out once traffic control was on site. Ambo's were still working onsite. CC outbound was chockers of people and buses just waiting.

Yikes, that was why I saw buses lining the length of Victoria Bridge when I left work at 6pm. Good thing I decided to get a P88, even though Victoria Bridge looked fairly clear when I went past.

A anyway you look at it, its an ugly scenario. It was unclear who was at fault. Good to see the commuters waiting in the city took it in stride when I let them know what the hold up was. They didn't try to blame Translink and were fine waiting. Not everyone is like a CM comments feed.

Mr X

Good idea imho. I'd rather we miss a BUZ service than having someone who waits 30mins for a bus have to wait another 30mins. Or wait an hour.
199 operates every 10-15mins during the day on a weekend, someone who loses a bus can simply wait another 10-15mins. Not ideal, but better of the two scenarios.

196, 222, 412 aren't on that list? Why?

Glad to hear no one was seriously injured. I'm sure we'll see some unusual bus movements around Brisbane during this time. Carina depots huge diesel fleet will likely be be called upon to operate northside and westside bus services.

Commuting nightmare: Half of Brisbane bus fleet taken off roads

QuoteCommuting nightmare: Half of Brisbane bus fleet taken off roads
January 21, 2012 - 9:44AM

Half of Brisbane's bus fleet has been taken off the road following gas explosion at a city bus depot early today.

No buses fuelled by gas will be in service while the incident is investigated, and commuters are being warned of significant disruptions across the weekend.

Workers at the Virginia bus depot were refilling gas cylinders on a bus when the gas tank ruptured, turning into a projectile and striking another bus, Brisbane City Council said.

Two buses were damaged but no one was injured.

As a precaution, almost 560 gas-powered buses have been taken out of service while investigations are under way.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, who visited the depot this morning, says a similar incident occurred in 2008.

"This is the first incident since that occurrence," he told the ABC.

"We don't know at this time what has been the cause...and I am keen to see what the inspectors have to say in regard to it."

Information on bus services is available on the TransLink website.

No more gas buses please.  New technology now makes a diesel with selective catalytic reduction and/or exhaust gas recirculation as clean as a CNG motor, so there is really no significant advantage anymore.  The Greens can now be appeased without the use of volatile fuels.
