RAIL Back On Track - Media Release 30 September 2007

Brisbane:  Public Transport - Congestion Solutions

RAIL - Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community organisation for the promotion of rail throughout Australia has said that the experts have failed in rolling out public transport solutions for South East Queensland.  It is time to listen to the commuters who use the public transport regularly and carry out definitive actions based on this feedback.

Robert Dow said:

?The bus network is facing ?bus-lock? on the much trumpeted busways.  Maximum bus density in the CBD is almost here.

?Chronic cancellations on the Citytrain network are now at an alarmingly level.

?The Smart card ticketing project continues to be shrouded in secrecy as to the fine details of operation. This project is years late and is now an expensive global transport and information technology anachronism.

?There are many constructive suggestions made by the public and community groups.  These are just ignored and more expert panels convened by Government and Transport Agencies to generate ?glossy documents on recycled paper?.  These grand plans typically have not much relevance to commuters? real transport needs.

?We don?t need any more reports, plans and ?feel good policy? documents.  We need action!

?The public transport mess is evidence of the flawed and failed expert lead approaches.

?We call on the Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations to implement an immediate community consultative process for solutions to our public transport problems, and to act decisively on the community feedback.?
