Minister for Transport
The Honourable Rachel Nolan
22/04/2009

War veterans and spouses to travel free on Anzac Day

War veterans and their spouses will receive free travel to and from dawn services and parades on TransLink's bus, rail and ferry services in a mark of respect for Anzac Day.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said all TransLink operators across South East Queensland would be providing services on Anzac Day, Saturday, April 25.

"The Queensland Government, through TransLink, will support our war veterans and their spouses by offering them free travel on bus, rail and ferry services on the commemorative day," Ms Nolan said.

"This is a small way for us to thank the men and women who have given so much to our country and who risked their lives for our country."

Ms Nolan said the free travel would apply to all veterans in uniform or who were wearing their service medals travelling to or from an Anzac Day ceremony.

"Veterans' spouses will also travel free, as will family members marching in place of a relative, so long as they are wearing their relative's medals," she said.

TransLink's new CEO Peter Strachan said TransLink would also be offering free travel to people in uniform from the Girls' Brigade, Boys' Brigade, Scouts and military associations who were participating in a ceremony.

Mr Strachan said TransLink had arranged extra public transport services for people travelling to the dawn service in the inner city on the day.

"There will be special bus and train services for people travelling to the 4am Anzac dawn service in Anzac Square," he said.

Mr Strachan said to reduce passenger confusion, all regular TransLink services would operate to a Saturday timetable, not a public holiday timetable.

For more information about public transport, please visit www.translink.com.au or call TransLink on 13 12 30, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
