Media Release 19 April 2009

Australia:  The rail revolution continues globally, stalls down under.

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has highlighted the President of the USA's announcement of a vision for a high speed rail network in the USA (1).

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"The announcement by President Obama of the strategic plan for a high speed rail network in the USA again confirms the increasing global momentum for rail public transport infrastructure.

"Australia is at the crossroads.  Do we take the big steps and move forwards with a sustainable transport solution for the future, or do we continue to concentrate on failing roads and ever increasing congestion?

"South east Queensland is a classic example of a failing transport paradigm.  Neglect until recently of rail has seen an almost intolerable build up of road traffic with community costs in terms of injury, death and congestion.

"The sustainable transport future is electric rail, light and heavy.  Time we got with it too!"
