RAIL Back On Track - Media Release 26 August 2007

Queensland: Support for Ministerial Statement 26 August 2007 - FUTURE RAIL CONNECTION IN STUDY'S SIGHTS

RAIL ? Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community organisation for the promotion of rail throughout Australia has congratulated the Minister of Transport and Main Roads Queensland, Mr Paul Lucas and the Queensland Government for the announcement of a feasibility study to examine the options for boosting rail capacity in the city centre, including the potential for an underground tunnel.

Robert Dow said:

?RAIL Back On Track welcomes this announcement today by the Minister.  We have long been suggesting an underground extension of the Citytrain network from roughly Central to Park Road would be a ?Smart State Solution?.?

?Rail is the bulk people mover!?

?Brisbane is struggling with a bus system that cannot cope, CityCats that are also leaving many passengers stranded at terminals, and a Citytrain network which is experiencing heavy loadings.  Cancellations of trains over the last few months have also lead to passengers being unable to board congested trains.?

?This announcement today is a very much welcome distant light at the end of tunnel!?

?As population pressures continue to build rail expansion is paramount.?

?People need to be continually encouraged to use public transport. What will endear changes in behaviour is making public transport accessible, punctual, frequent and affordable.  The ever escalating cost of fuel together with the pollution from road vehicles will also drive change.?

?We note that public input will be sought as part of the study.  This is essential for best outcomes for the community.?

?Well done Queensland!?
