Brisbane online media reporting that it appears not a deliberate event but perhaps poor decision making:

Why are people so stupid?  I'd rather be late for work than dead!

Rather than getting to work a bit sooner, this woman is now dead, thousands of other commuters are late for work, the driver and other witnesses have to deal with what happened and the woman's family (maybe her children) have to deal with losing her.

All for the sake of a few minutes.

Exactly. Hence why I haven't for quite some time, and never will, let anyone board my train who has crossed the tracks illegally. Unless there are consequences to their actions, they will never learn. A 30min wait till the next train is a much better consequence than death, but sadly there is still the 'it won't happen to me' mentality around. People still have the gall to abuse and threaten me when I refuse them entry to my train!

A few months ago I had a woman run diagonally across the level crossing at Murrarie in business attire and high heels while I was approaching from Cleveland. Would love to know how she knew I was 100% certain to be stopping there...

Just for a bit of perspective, yes this appears to be a case of poor decision making rather than a deliberate act and it did involve a train and adjacent to a train station.. however people make poor decisions each and every day as drivers or riders of vehicles and as cyclists and as pedestrians which also result in death and serious injuries to themselves and others... it's just that it happens so often and that the authorities "out of respect for family and friends" shy away from promoting these other incidents along the lines of "I am sorry to inform you however your (insert relationship here) is dead because they made the stupid decision to" ... texting, using mobile phone, speeding, not wearing seatbelts, drink driving, driving recklessly, driving beyond their abilities or that of the environment, running a red light, play a headphone zombie, trying to beat their last gps recorded time and decided to short cut something....

I think a little more perspective is required.  While this woman didn't deliberately walk in front of a train, this WAS a deliberate act.  She deliberately ignored the warning lights and sounds.  She deliberately ignored her own safety and focussed on that train that had just pulled up at the station - that she so desperately wanted to catch for some unexplained reason.

If you're going to compare it with drivers and riders, compare it to those who deliberately break the law - those who deliberately run red lights or drive at dangerous speeds - not those who misjudge or miss seeing other vehicles.

This is NOT a case of "poor decision making"... it's deliberately breaking the rules and putting yourself at danger - all for the sake of saving a few minutes.

Ok sorry the heat has got to me... deliberate act I was trying to tip toe around was that of deliberately ending ones life... which unfortunately happens with people and trains.

While it might be a nice black and white approach to looking at the incident I can't agree with the emphasis on it being a deliberate act by the individual... we only know what is being reporting in the media... and from this it can be said that there was a moving train and now a deceased person... how it got to this stage is still to be determined.

There are so many reasons why it may not have been a case of a person deliberately breaking the rules, putting themselves in danger to save a few minutes.... and thankfully in Australia, there will be a competent investigation to determine what happened and what can we learn from the unfortunate event.

Drivers and riders die and are seriously injured in incidents where they make deliberate decisions in contravention of legislation... and they also die and are seriously injured when involved in incidents where they make poor decisions without contravening legislation.

Same here. ( change train for bus, tracks for busway )

I have to be harsh after thinking about this today.

The woman was simply an idiot, simple as that.  Give her a Darwin Award, one less selfish idiot on the planet, and I feel no pity towards that.

quote from courier mail

QuoteCouriermail.com.au reporter John McCarthy confirmed at 8.15pm, his normal 1.15 commute to Landsborough on the Caboolture line had grown to three hours - and he was still waiting.
He said he had boarded the train at Bowen Hills station about 5.30pm.

About 150 Passengers were then "dumped" at Petrie Station and were told two consecutive Caboolture trains had been cancelled.
He said QR employees responded to angry commuters with claims their control centre was not telling them when trains were cancelled.
QR workers could offer no explanation or information about the next service.

Commuter Edward Jobson has already swapped trains three times this evening after leaving Goodna bound for Landsborough.
About 8.30pm he was two-and-a-half hours and counting into what is normally a two hour journey and has spent 70 of those minutes waiting at Petrie Station.
"Nobody tells you anything on the train, it just stopped," he said.
He is now hoping it is third-time lucky, and that the latest train change will see him safely home soon.
A TransLink spokesman said a signalling and a problem with the points, which help direct trains to the correct track, blew out waiting times on the Caboolture line.

Quoten the Gold Coast bus routes have also been affected by the storms with routes 18, 18a, 20, 20a, 700, 702, 703, 706, 707, 709 and 715 delayed up to 45 minutes.

A Translink spokesperson said the services will gradually return to normal but it will take a while especially the train lines.

"They're delayed now and they have to get back into sync so it does take a little while to recover," he said.

"Delays are expected to continue into the evening."

Passengers enroute to Sunny Coast were also complaining about the lack of communications.

Sent to all outlets:

20th January 2014

Queensland:  Bridge strikes, level crossing incidents continue unabated - action demanded today.

Greetings,

On one of the most important days for rail and public transport in SEQ ever, two boom gate strikes have already caused delays, not only for the public transport network but also the road network. Serious incident in Toowoomba Friday night.  It is time that serious sanctions were imposed on these clowns.  Life time suspensions make actually endear the behaviour change that is lacking with selfish motorists in Queensland.

What's new?

Best wishes
Robert

Media Release 29 May 2009 re-released 20 January 2014

Queensland:  Bridge strikes, level crossing incidents continue unabated - action demanded today.

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport users has called for immediate action to stop road users causing chaos with the rail network, and for the Government to get serious about bridge strikes.

Robert Dow, spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"Yesterday on the QR Citytrain network more chaos from bridge strikes and motorists disregarding road rules and smashing into boom gates.  It is time that something was done!  Enough is enough."

"Heavy vehicles, buses and trucks must stop at all unprotected level crossings immediately and only proceed if safe to do so."

"We call on the Queensland Government to take decisive actions today before there is another disaster."

Warrigal Rd boomgates have also been struck!

And people are blaming QR for it.... Sigh. Really I think idiot alerts should be issued when boom gates get hit. Many pax will blame new timetables as well. Stupidity abounds.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

One issue with saturating the current infrastructure is the flow-on effect of delays.  As you can see, a delay on one line causes major flow-on effects for the entire network.

We need the infrastructure improvements as identified by QR.  Failure to do so will result in a melt-down of the network each time there's a single delay.

I got caught out by that boom gate strike, while bumping into Martin Ryan (one of the Executives from Queensland Rail), who was also caught out.  I am happy to report that Martin was making calls to Kevin Wright (another one of the Executives from Queensland Rail), to ensure that the right communications were going out and to make sure that they got the trains going as quickly as possible.  He was also trying to help out passengers caught out by it.

I ended up getting stuck at Banoon, and after about a 30min wait, I headed back inbound on a packed to the brim Brisbane City and Ferny Grove service.
