Re congestion. VLine tends to call it track congestion.  That is a bit clearer than congestion on the network, which can be interpreted a number of ways.

Couriermail --> Power problems affecting train services on several lines

QuoteCOMMUTERS are being told to expect timetable changes and replacement buses on southern train lines this morning with crews working to fix damage to overhead powerlines in the city.

A Queensland Rail spokeswoman said on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines trains will run direct between Moorooka and Roma St Station via the Tennyson Loop until further notice.

Cleveland line trains will run express from Roma Street to Buranda stopping only at Yeerongpilly.

Buses will also be running to other stations along the line during the morning.

Other stations on the lines have not been affected, the spokeswoman said.

Last night 60 people were evacuated from a train stranded at Central Station for almost an hour after the locomotive lost power.

The train became stuck on platform three at around 9.20pm, with guards manually prying open the doors to allow passengers to evacuate.

Services were delayed throughout the night while crews worked to fix the damage, discovering more problems at around 3am which has set back repairs.

TransLink has warned commuters to expect 20 minute delays on all lines and up to 60 minutes for bus replacements.

Commuters took to social media to vent about the widespread changes and delays to service, and furious that communication to customers has been minimal.

David Kerle said Queensland Rail was "an embarrassment to Queensland".

Jai Marcon told Queensland Rail, "So your northbound trains to Toombul from Central due to depart 11:07 and 11:13 were cancelled and your customers are standing around at a 1/4 to midnight in winter, wondering when the bus is coming. Your staff on the ground (as usual) have no access to information about where the buses are... What valuable information can you provide to assist the people standing around, waiting?"

"I just had to walk from Milton to Roma street as there is no information at the station. I was late to work because of the mess around last night, guess it will take me ages to get home,"

Jeanine Brown said.

Meanwhile Nicole Scanlan said the problems to the network are nothing new.

"It is a little frustrating when my kids come back from Kippa ring every second Sunday there is usually an issue somewhere and end up on a bus," she said.

Brisbanetimes --> Train network delays, buses called in after overhead-line issues

QuoteAll trains on the south-east Queensland network are experiencing 20-minute delays and buses have been called in to replace affected services as overhead power line issues cause commuter headaches.

A Queensland Rail spokeswoman said the power issues began at about 8.30pm on Saturday between Central and Roma Street stations in Brisbane and were still affecting the network on Sunday.

The spokeswoman said some train were being re-routed and buses were replacing trains between Roma Street and Moorooka, departing from rail replacement bus stops.

Hour-long delays were expected for replacement buses and a single-train shuttle was running between South Brisbane and Moorooka.

Beenleigh and Gold Coast services were also running express in both directions between Roma Street and Moorooka via the Tennyson loop.

Cleveland services were also running express in both directions between Roma Street and Buranda via the Tennyson loop, stopping only at Yeerongpilly station.

Own worst enemy at times Queensland Rail.  Tell what the real issue was, cryptic nonsense just causes grief in the end.

They need to be consistent, concise and accurate.

ABC News --> Queensland Rail train delays unresolved after power failure strands 60 commuters in a tunnel

QuotePower problems between two major Brisbane train stations were responsible for close to 60 passengers becoming stuck underground for nearly an hour on Saturday night.

About 9pm a train lost power between Roma Street and Central stations, bringing it to a stop inside a tunnel.

Passengers were evacuated after an hour with one person treated at the scene for anxiety.

Queensland Rail said the problem was due to overhead power line issues, and technicians were still on site this morning working to restore power.

TransLink said as a result:

Beenleigh and Gold Coast line trains will run express in both directions between Roma Street and Moorooka via the Tennyson loop
Cleveland line trains will run express in both directions between Roma Street and Buranda via the Tennyson loop stopping only at Yeerongpilly station
Buses will replace trains between Roma Street and Moorooka departing from rail replacement bus stops
A single train shuttle will operate between South Brisbane and Moorooka.

The TransLink website said customers travelling on Gold Coast line trains requiring assistance boarding trains or wheelchair access should travel to Altandi, Loganlea or Beenleigh stations via Beenleigh lines trains and transfer to the Gold Coast line.

"Trains services are delayed up to 20 minutes, and up to 60 minutes for rail replacement bus services," the website read.

Queensland Rail has been contacted for comment.

I hate to say it but I don't recall any issues this bad or ongoing with any Walkers/EDI rolling stock...even the troublesome IMU160/SMU260 series.

Brisbanetimes --> NGR train at centre of network-wide delays after overhead line issues

QuoteA New Generation Rollingstock train is at the centre of the network-wide delays causing serious headaches for south-east Queensland commuters on Sunday.

Queensland Rail said an NGR train came into contact with the overhead power lines between Central and Roma Street stations at about 8.30pm on Saturday night, resulted in damage to both the train and network power supply.

QR said 1.2 kilometres of damaged overhead equipment needed to be repaired after the incident involving the Airport service and overhead lines resulted in sparks flying.

Almost 60 passengers were stranded on board the damaged NGR train for just over an hour on Saturday night before they were able to disembark.

The incident caused delays on Saturday night and they continued on Sunday, with 20-minute delays across the network and buses called in to replace affected services.

"Crews are working as quickly as possible to repair the damage and services have been restored through to Roma Street station," QR said in a statement.

"Services that would normally pass South Brisbane station on the Gold Coast, Beenleigh and Cleveland lines are being rerouted through the Tennyson loop line.

"Gold Coast and Beenleigh trains are running express from Moorooka to Roma Street stations and Cleveland trains are running express from Buranda to Roma Street, stopping only at Yeerongpilly station.

"Rail replacement buses are conveying customers wanting to access stations between Moorooka and Roma Street.

"All other services are experiencing moderate delays as they pass through the inner-city area."

QR apologised to affected customers and said it expected the repairs to be completed before the Monday morning peak hour, but vowed to keep customers informed through the TransLink website.

"Repairs are continuing today and we ask that people allow additional travel time if travelling through the inner city area," the statement read.

"Our first priority is safely repairing the damage to overhead power lines and restoring full services for our customers. Investigations will be undertaken to determine the cause of the issue."

Queensland Rail

Statement on overhead power issue through inner city

QuoteAt 8.28pm last night (Saturday 7 July), we experienced an overhead power issue through the inner city area.

On inspection, electrical contact between a New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) train and the overhead powerlines resulted in  damage to the train and power supply.  Works are now underway to move the train and repair 1200 metres of damaged overhead equipment.

As a result, buses were immediately arranged to replace trains between Bowen Hills, South Brisbane and Corinda stations.

Crews are working as quickly as possible to repair the damage and services have been restored through to Roma Street station.

Services that would normally pass South Brisbane station on the Gold Coast, Beenleigh and Cleveland lines are being rerouted through the Tennyson loop line. Gold Coast and Beenleigh trains are running express from Moorooka to Roma Street stations and Cleveland trains are running express from Buranda to Roma Street, stopping only at Yeerongpilly station. Rail replacement buses are conveying customers wanting to access stations between Moorooka and Roma Street.

All other services are experiencing moderate delays as they pass through the inner city area.

We apologise to our customers who have been impacted by this issue.  Repairs are continuing today and we ask that people allow additional travel time if travelling through the inner city area.  At this stage, full services are expected to be restored for tomorrow's morning peak period and we will keep our customers updated as repairs continue.

Our first priority is safely repairing the damage to overhead power lines and restoring full services for our customers.  Investigations will be undertaken to determine the cause of the issue.

We thank customers for their patience and encourage them to visit www.translink.com.au before travelling today for service updates.

Couriermail --> Power problems affecting train services on several lines

QuoteUPDATE: Queensland Rail is hopeful Brisbane's train network will be fixed in time for Monday's peak morning rush as commuters go back to work.

Executive General Manager Nick King said at this stage full services are expected to be restored in time.

It follows a day of widespread delays across the network, and bus replacements on southern lines after overhead powerlines were damaged just before 8.30pm on Saturday.

Crews have been working through the night to repair the damage, which was much more severe than originally thought.

Mr King said investigations into what caused the damage are still ongoing, but 1.2km of powerlines were stripped from the inner city area as a result.

"Electrical contact between a New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) train and the overhead powerlines resulted in damage to the train and power supply," he said.

"Works are now underway to move the train and repair 1200 metres of damaged overhead equipment. The contact between the train and overhead line did cause minor electrical sparking, however reports of a fire are not correct."

Queensland Rail has apologised to customers for the disruption to services, which look set to continue for most of Sunday.

A spokeswoman encouraged passengers to check the Translink website before travelling and allow extra time in the city.

The Guardian --> Queensland Rail under scrutiny after fault traps almost 60 passengers underground

QuoteAlmost 60 passengers were left trapped underground after a fault caused by one of Queensland Rail's New Generation Rollingstock trains damaged power lines, leading to widespread delays.

In an incident set to fuel more criticism of the new trains' rollout, electrical contact between a train and overhead lines caused damage to the power supply on Saturday night.

It resulted in a second train on the Brisbane airport line breaking down in the tunnel between Roma Street and Central stations at around 8.30pm.

After being stalled for more than an hour, passengers had to be evacuated via an emergency exit, with one person reportedly needing treatment for anxiety. The power issue was still being resolved by 1pm on Sunday, with services to Brisbane's south and east rerouted to avoid inner-city station South Brisbane.

Southbound trains between Roma Street and Moorooka were replaced by buses, with delays felt on all other services as they passed through the city.

QR has apologised to customers.

"Works are now underway to move the train and repair 1,200m of damaged overhead equipment," QR spokesman Nick King. "The contact between the train and overhead line did cause minor electrical sparking."

The incident is the latest in a series of problems with the new trains, which have been delayed and flawed in design after failing to meet Australian requirements around disability access.

The procurement process started under Anna Bligh's Labor government but was signed off by Campbell Newman's Liberal National party government, with the first trains delivered after Labor returned to power in 2015.

The premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, was the transport minister at the time the process was started.

Robert Dow, from the Rail Back on Track advocacy group, said it was worried the new trains were not properly interacting with existing overhead infrastructure.

"We have to find out, do these new trains have a propensity for dewirements that the old trains didn't have?" he said.

Just some observations after passing through Central/Roma St;

EMU 27 on platform 6 with pantograph down

IMU 274 on platform 3 also with pantograph down

There doesn't seem to be a lot going on in terms of "crews working around the clock to address the issue" as seen from the Roma St end of platform 5. The two track workers I could see were sitting at an empty platform 3/4 having a chat

red dragin

The dewirement sounds like it's southside somewhere, with another train being stranded in the central to Roma St tunnel.

Must have fried signalling as well? As there is a section break between Roma St and the tunnel leading to the merivale bridge from memory.

Probably did. If the overhead came into contact with the train it would've sent a huge amount of current into the track.

I understand there has been at least one previous dewirement with NGRs.  I think this observation puts forward a compelling case for a very close inspection of all the pantographs on NGRs.  This sort of disruption is difficult, potentially dangerous, and it puts a lot of pressure on the recovery crews (who have done an excellent job in recovery from the unfortunate situation BTW).
