6.09pm Park Road-Doomben train cancelled Park Road-Doomben

The 6.09pm Park Road to Doomben train has been cancelled from Park Road to Doomben due to an earlier points fault at Northgate.

The next Park Road to Doomben train will depart Park Road Station at 7.09pm.

Pretty sure it's 222/224 that failed.

I could have put this in the Random observations thread, but I thought it would be a better fit here...

I'm not sure if there was a Translink or QR announcement about this but anyway...
So I got on a Springfield train from Mango Hill at 9:25am (SMU243/SMU something else). All was well until we approached EJ. On the airport branch was IMU 182/something else coming onto the main suburban lines. Stopped just before the track branches of was a BNE-bound 706, which started moving again Just after I passed it. Then around halfway between EJ and the BNE junction was a BNE-bound 704. Then, at EJ, was EMU 20(with its slightly illegal paint-job on the second carriage*)/(something else) which was heading to Northgate. That train was there when I arrived, and was there when I left. Then a little later down the line was a stationary 714 (also BNE-bound).

Sure, my train arrived at Central on time, but there would have been a quite a few people who weren't on time to wherever they were going.

(also I saw a similar scenario near bowen hills on the return journey - A train sitting at P1 and two trains, one on the last bit of the FG overpass, and the other to the left of it (in the direction of travel  :hg )waiting patiently.

*At least it doesn't cover the windows completely, only very minimally.
Do I really need to clarify?
Sarcasm and rhetorical questions don't translate perfectly into written form, do they?

Had to tell the hoards waiting for a replacement bus at Enoggera that there was a 357 due in 2 minutes on Wardell St (as no one in QR will). Thankfully they all made it!

I'm more interested to know when they decided to put that list of bus routes up...

geez what a nightmare people on that line faced...

this was the typical trip to the city from ferny grove

Quote
****  Finally made it to the CBD.

7:40 boarded at Ferny Grove

8:00 arrived at Mitchelton

9:00 after lining up for an hour. Partly in the rain, got on a rail bus

9:40 arrived at Bowen Hills

9:50 arrived at Central

translink posted at 8.58 that they had 12 railbuses running...
Reports of buses taking 30 mins from Gaythorne to Alderley...
People were queued at Mitchelton for 40mins and only halfway through the line-up...

Translink should have explicitly stated at least 90mins not 60 mins.......12 buses for an entire line.....that's going to give you massive delays and crowding.....

Massive backlash on QR's Facebook! Still not fixed.

Couriermail --> Trains on Ferny Grove line suspended following technical fault

QuoteQUEENSLAND Rail has apologised to commuters following a signal fault on the Ferny Grove line which caused train closures.

At about 4am this morning, Queensland Rail noticed significant damage to signal cables and electricians have since been working to replace 200m of cable.

Queensland Rail said rain last night caused electrical circuits to short out and signals to stop.

Throwing a spanner in the works, Queensland Rail called for more than 20 buses for inconvenienced commuters - only for the buses to be delayed in heavy traffic following a number of road crashes.

City Train executive general manager Nick King assured commuters that afternoon peak hour would be a different story.

"We sincerely apologize for the significant delays that were caused this morning to our customers, and we look forward to having a better afternoon," Mr King said.

The matter of refunds for commuters will need to be decided by Translink.

Trains have now resumed in both directions after being out of action for almost eight hours. ...

This is going to keep on happening while QR has a "run to failure" method of detecting faults in lineside equipment.  Nothing seems to have changed in the last decade in that respect.

Was the same method used 3 decades ago? I took the train to school almost every day from 1988-92 and reckon I could count on one hand the number of times I was seriously inconvenienced by QR, and one of them was a strike. Obviously there's a lot more services now, but shouldn't that be even more incentive to ensure the lineside equipment is reliable?

Modern signalling and control systems are centralised.  Very dependent on thousands of track circuits, complex telemetry, cabling and so forth.

When I think back to the earlier days I struggle to remember any service disruptions due to track faults, signal faults and so forth.  On some lines in SEQ there were probably more trains when you take into account the numerous goods services, rail motors, country passenger services and like.  The essential difference was that signalling and train control was by sections controlled locally.  Not dependent on a centralised system as we do today.  These are prone to faults. One detector, circuit goes US system falls over.  Seems not much redundancy in these systems today.

The old local signal boxes with simple telegraphy communications (bell rings etc.) to next section worked.  If something did fail locally it was a simple effort to proceed under authorities.

The major disruptions I recall were actually mainly locomotive failures.  I recall leaving Melbourne one morning on a steam passenger service and we failed somewhere around St Albans.  A Tait electric set came up behind and pushed us out of the way.  A rescue engine subsequently arrived.

TransLink tried to source extra buses to alleviate the bus delays on the Ferny Grove line due to a signal fault today.  The buses had to come from the Glasshouse Mountains, but were delayed due to a six-car pile-up on the Bruce Highway when a 14-year-old boy allegedly abandoned a red Alfa Romeo he was supposedly driving and ran off.

Now all of that sounds very extraordinary, but is fact.

Let's consider something similar happening during the Commonwealth Games.  Not the Ferny Grove Line but the Beenleigh and Gold Coast Lines and the highway involved is not the Bruce Highway, but the M1.

Contingency plan?  Oh, there isn't one?  Oh dear.  :fp:

Rail fail continues to get worse ..

Good Morning,

Another well publicised door failure on a New Generation Rollingstock train yesterday at Helensvale.

How many door failures have been happening?  A few according to our sources.  During testing we know that at one point an emergency brake application resulted in doors flying open.  Have all the door issues with the NGRs been resolved?  Appears not.  These appear to be a bit more than ' teething ' issues Minister.  Unless resolved these issues could possibly ground the NGR fleet.  This is not withstanding the final pending view of the Australian Human Rights Commission re non compliance of the new trains.

Apart from the unreliability of the NGRs and the existing aging train fleet, commuters have to put up constant infrastructure failures.  The latest the 8 hour suspension of rail services on the Ferny Grove line with the commensurate follow on chaos becoming the norm sadly.
" Queensland Rail said rain last night caused electrical circuits to short out and signals to stop. " [ http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/southbound-lanes-of-bruce-highway-closed-north-of-brisbane-following-accident/news-story/f3a98fc74b2c3788e3de5699832b1c21 ].  It often rains in SEQ, are more meltdowns on the way?

Seriously, what is going on to resolve the mess?  Need more than spin and bluster and ' sincere apologies ' ... a Commission of Inquiry into the NGR would be a good start.

Best wishes
Robert
