UPDATE: QR technicians have been caught in traffic on their way to Rosewood to fix a broken boom gate.

Traffic has been backing up since 3.07pm.

INITIAL: CARS are backing up on John St at Rosewood after the boom gates on the train level crossing failed shortly after 3pm.

Queensland Rail technicians are on their way but are unable to say when the problem will be fixed.

An earlier track fault meant the boom gates automatically locked down and they won't reopen until the problem is fixed.

Trains are only delayed about five minutes.

A spokesperson said QR wished to apologise to anybody impacted.

Police have been notified.

Queensland Times --> Call for investigation into Ipswich 'rail fail'

AN IPSWICH councillor has called on the Deputy Premier to investigate the latest 'rail fail' impacting the Ipswich region.

Rosewood based councillor David Pahlke was fuming on Friday when the boom gates at Rosewood failed and were stuck down for several hours.

A huge column of traffic quickly banked behind the gates, including emergency services.

An ambulance was forced to seek an alternate route.

Cr David Pahlke, who has served on the council for more than 25 years, says the "rail fail" is not good enough.

On Sunday Cr Pahlke wrote to the Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, pleading with her to address the repeated failure and provide a permanent solution.

He said this was one example of a number of times the boom gates in the town's centre had failed and wreaked havoc for residents who were "not happy".

Premier calling for an investigation and a permanent solution.

"This is not the first time it's happened, it's not the third, fourth... it even happened again later that night I'm told," Cr Pahlke said.

"There is something wrong there and all I am asking is go out there fix it permanently.

"All I want is some answers, why is this happening?

"I just hope someone's life wasn't in danger because of this rail fail (because emergency services were kept waiting)."

In his submission, Cr Pahlke wrote, "Please Deputy Premier investigate this issue".

He is awaiting a response to the email sent Sunday morning.

On Friday, Queensland Rail said its technicians arrived as quickly as possible and by 5.05pm the gates were working again after the initial failure just after 3pm.

Most of the mechanical issues of late are just the older trains showing signs of aging electronics. Sometimes you can get the issue sorted while the train is running in service between stations. Sometimes you can get it sorted while stopped at a station. You can get them into limp mode where they could replace the train once back in the inner city. You could get it into limp mode but cancel it for all passengers. You might have to pan down and do a hard reset of the train. Other times all you can say is "it's f**ked. We need a train to rescue it". Remember the EMUs and SMUs don't have very advanced computers. If theres a fault go to the circuit breakers, see what's been tripped and try to fix/limit the issue - done in the cab, locking the doors/carriage or going through all the random panels and boxes hiding in the train Good thing there is a guard in the rear 3. The amount of time saved trouble shooting is worth them being there hahaha.
