The 6.20am Nambour to Central train has been cancelled between Beeerwah and Central stations due to an operational issue.

The next Nambour to Central train will departed Nambour at 6.38am.

I asked QR on FB what was the operational issue?

Response.

QuoteQueensland Rail Hi Robert these units experienced a traction power issue and therefore the service was terminated. These customers were then conveyed on the next service which was six minutes later. Thanks.

To which I replied ..

QuoteThank you. The punters would be a lot happier if that was said ' mechanical issue ' to keep it simple. Operational issue is far to vague and irritates all.

^Many of the plywood panels at the temporary platform (temporary since 2009) became saturated during the recent Big Wet, requiring replacement panels to be installed?  The station was roped off this morning when new panels were put down, and would have been unavailable for the lunchtime run of the Gympielander up north.

Some track work happening north of the town, involving bank stabilisation also.

Trains currently running around 5 mins late on Ferny Grove Line, with 3/6-car trains out of usual order. Nothing on TransLink's website.

Delays 30mins inbound: mechanical issue

Cleveland line trains travelling inbound are delayed up to 30 minutes due to an earlier mechanical issue.
Apparently a train broke down, and passengers had to exit via the guards cabin due to doors not being able to opened. Concerning number of "mechanical issues" recently on top of the "operational issues".

The EMUs are getting old. Just remember if NGR was on time some of them would have been phased out by now.

I am sure the service personnel are doing the best they can with the resources, equipment and rolling stock they have.  It must be demoralising to work in QR these days.  Generally, front-line staff are helpful.

HappyTrainGuy

Mayne is 24/7 remember. It never shuts down. Unless some delivery driver trips the emergency shut off by hitting the overheads again.

More info on the Cleveland Line 'mechanical issues' this morning:

I was at Roma St at around 9:10 am waiting for the 9:20 Cleveland-bound train when an announcement was made over the loud speaker saying "the next Shorncliffe train is running approximately 30 mins late (i.e-cancelled) due to a mechanical issue at Buranda". When I passed Park Rd at around 9:35, it was sitting at the platform (platform 3 i think) with about 20 people with high-vis shirts on talking or something (I'm guessing they were waiting for it to be towed back  to Mayne). But anyway, from about Norman Park on, there was an inbound train every 2-3 mins going past until about Murrarie when they went back to their normal 30 min frequency.

On a side note, when I got off at Wynnum Central station at around 10, there was about 50 people waiting for the 9:39 (leaving Cleveland) train. When it went past, it looked like soon it would be standing room only. Not sure why it was so busy.

BrizCommuter

According to TransLink's twitter there have been around 9 cancellations or significantly late running trains on the Cleveland Line since 11am (after this mornings incident(s)).

Regarding the EMUs, is it worthwhile to give them an extensive refurbish, e.g. replace motors and electronic systems, as the carriages themselves still seem to be in reasonable condition.

SurfRail

^ We already have the equivalent of about 1/3rd of the EMU fleet sitting around brand new and not carrying passengers!

Definitely no point hanging onto them for more than a second longer than necessary.

Perhaps the NGR order should be increased then. I really don't think 75 sets is sufficient to to replace EMU/ICE (and maybe SMU200?) AND increase services to a decent level (when sufficient drivers are trained). Also future network expansion!

Quite simply no. And some carriages..... most carriages have seen better days. The electronic systems are so old that you have to rip it all out and start over (I've made numerous references recently to their limitations such as not being DDA compliant, difficulty with faults, limitations with connecting to other units etc). Not to mention the EMUs do not meet Australian rail safety standards. Also remember its not just the trains you see. There is the ongoing and increasing running costs because of all the different rollingstock and the associated spares required to keep them running. The cost to retro fit them would exceed their value when you compare them to a new train.

BrizCommuter

^ Yep, the electrics on the EMUs is pretty much hard-wired, making refurbishment difficult. Very little of the modular construction seen on modern trains.

achiruel

So QR needs more NGRs then? Surely I can't be alone in my view on this?

Yes, originally it was to be 100 6 car trains, was cut back to 75 6 car trains by the LNP.

Probably need 125 6 car trains ..

Meanwhile ..

Because they think like a customer and they think customers don't really want to know why their train was cancelled!

BTW I thought I heard somewhere it was a LX strike at Fruitgrove. Perhaps I was misinformed?
