Sent to all outlets:

1st October 2016

Why were around 50 Queensland Rail services cancelled on Friday 30th September 2016?

Good Morning,

We noted a significant number of Queensland Rail services were cancelled yesterday.

Service disruption notifications via https://twitter.com/TransLinkSEQ indicate around FIFTY (50) services were cancelled without any real satisfactory explanation.

Can the Minister For Transport please explain what is actually going on? Punters are tired of being left stranded on the network and missing important bus connections.

Are there enough train crew and trains to roll out the new train timetable from the 4th October 2016?

A concerned public would like to know thank you.

Best wishes
Robert

the best the social media team could do was:

Hi ****, we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to your journey yesterday and today. Unfortunately we have experienced operational issues with the service for both days and our teams are working hard behind the scenes to minimise the impact to our customers. Is there any assistance we can provide you now - were you able to catch the next service or are you still waiting? Thanks

err...I think that should read  *our limited team* is working hard :P

We need to know what is actually going on.

Not looking good for next week.  If they are unable to deliver the present timetable how is it going to go next week? Total shambles ? ?

This is rather contemptible treating the public in this manner.

The Minister needs to make a statement about what is going on.  It smells like industrial problems to me .. industrial ' flu '   ::)

twitter feed for last 24h from 10am today...

only 4 BT services cancelled <<< good effort
50 QR services cancelled
extensive delays for gold coast buses (to be expected for the 4 day footy finals long weekend)

ozbob

It begs credibility to say nothing about what is going on?

There might be a reasonable explanation for example - stabling yard power failure or other infrastructure issue.

Could be an outbreak of ' food poisoning ' or ' flu ' ...

But trying to ride this out without explanation is pretty poor stuff.  I have asked the Minister's Office if there is a reason.

Nothing heard back yet.

My guess is staffing issues which messed up the rostering.  It has happened in the past where train crews have en massed taken the day off causing cancellations throughout the day.

Lets assume your right....
Then the head of QR rostering has a lot of explaining to do. Bus operations had all hands on deck yesterday due to many casual drivers being available....so they are relatively immune from shortages like this.
This cannot happen again for future 4day long weekends..especially the rare ones between easter and xmas.....this is not a good look for the first October queens birthday weekend...

Quite surprised that the Cm/BTimes didn't pick up on this......now that the minister is concerned that could soon change...

HappyTrainGuy

You'll actually find lots of QR staff wanting to do the big 3-4 day weekends ;)

Anyway it could be anything. Could be drivers testing combined with a few drivers being sick. Crews exceeding hours. Reserve crews then exceeding their hours. Something to do with terminating based crews. Could be many things.

petey3801

Long weekends/public holidays generally don't matter much to traincrew, as they don't get a choice as whether or not they work the public holiday anyway (unless it is already a rostered day off on the master roster) and only get paid extra for 3 public holidays per year anyway.
