Its just to hide some of the common faults in our system.  How does a telemetry issue occur overnight in dry whether.  At least in NSW they show the true reasons for delays but it does backfire because 95% of the time its a freight train failing.

Yes and no. Technically the points/track/signal faults may have to do with telemetry, however calling it a track/signal/points fault is actually more accurate. Telemetry failures like the one reported is an all over failure of the telemetry, ie: Control can't see where trains are, can't see what state signals or points are in etc, they have absolutely no detection in the area of the telemetry failure. Whereas with track faults, it's generally something along the lines of a faulty relay, loose wire etc.etc. Control still has 'detection' as such, but isn't able to set a route due to the system thinking the section is already occupied. Signal faults can be anything from blackout signals or routes just not wanting to set up for whatever reason.

Telemetry doesn't need rain or anything like that to fail. It's basically just a big computer system and that area has 'crashed', so to speak. It is a fairly rare occurance actually, regular points/signal/track faults are much more common.
