The Tennyson loop got a workout earlier this morning with the Maryvale Bridge being closed for emergency trackwork just after 9am for a bit over an hour, with all Cleveland, Beenleigh and Gold Coast (and return runs) running express via Sherwood.

I was lucking I missed that was on the Gold Coast service at 7 am ex Roma Southbound

Unreported on the TL website, NCL had signal failure in the Narangba area as reported by the 1530 Nambour train guard.

We were held  with the northbound Spirit of Queensland at Narangba for 15 minutes.  Guard updates were appreciated (required manual paperwork clearance to Burpenngary before we were on our way)

On average, how often does a bridge strike occur in SEQ?  Would be a handy figure to know.

I think it is time the authorities set up a ' bridge strike watch ' web site, listing locations and frequency. It might be useful to highlight this ongoing scourge, again it seems beyond the capabilities of the authorities to do much.  They have essentially ignored our attempts for them to address the issue in a systematic manner.

If they don't do a ' bridge strike watch ' web site, I will.

I will put out a MR later today on it.

We just need more sacrificial beams.  And more serious, non financial based penalties for those who do hit bridges. Dermerit points, penalties for the drivers employers, truck confiscation.

If I can lose 2 demerit points for failing to display p plates while on a p licence, then truck drivers should be losing the 3 points for driving without due care. :bg:

ozbob, the photo of the BT bus hitting the bridge, how the @#$! could that happen? Surely BT route planners consider bridge heights when creating/altering bus routes?

There have been a number of ' bus bridge strikes ' around SEQ in the last few years.  One in particular I recall, at the time there was a mass evacuation of Brisbane CBD during the looming floods in 2011, a BT bus hit a bridge at Indooroopilly which disrupted the evacuation ( details > http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=5234.msg44902#msg44902 ).  It is not only BT, other operators have had bus bridge strikes as well.

It happens when the driver chooses to take the bus off route, for whatever reason.  Short cut etc.  A factor is also that bus clearance may be higher than what the driver thinks because of effects due to road variations.  If they stick to the prescribed routes not an issue hey?

Please note: Graceville Station will be closed during this period and there will be no access to ticket equipment. TransLink ticketing policy will apply i.e. passenger commencing their journey from this station can travel without touching on their go card or purchasing a paper ticket. Passengers terminating their journey at this station and cannot touch off will need to contact the TransLink call centre (13 12 30) to have their fare adjusted accordingly.

Interesting... Does this mean free travel from Graceville but normal fares going to Graceville? (Except some inner city stations with fare gates)

ozbob

Yes, technically if commence at Graceville first trip is free if using go card.

Detraining at Graceville you would be expected to touch on as per normal at commencement where ever that may be,  but apply for adjustment each time.
