Media Release 15 January 2010

SEQ:  The rail future appears in most unlikely places ...

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has said a simple timetable alteration to an inbound Citytrain service as a result of an operational delay on the Ipswich line early this morning, has demonstrated dramatically what can be achieved when the Corinda to Darra upgrade is complete.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"This morning the 6.12am service from Oxley to Caboolture was delayed about 13 minutes. This meant that the two trains were running very close together inbound. The 6.12am service and the following 6.25am service from Oxley (1)."

"The late running 6.12am service was changed to run express from Corinda to Roma Street.  The train left Corinda at 6.31am and arrived at Roma Street station at 6.41am.  Time taken for the journey from Corinda to Roma St was ten minutes, half the normal all stations time."

"The track upgrade between Corinda and Darra includes a further third track for suburban trains and an additional fourth line for freight trains (2), so that two tracks will become four. This upgrade is scheduled for completion by the end of this year."

"The upgrade will allow more express services to run to and from Darra and the City with considerable reductions in the time of the journey. Services to and from Ipswich can run express patterns between the CBD and Darra, with limited stops.  Additional sweeper services say between Darra and Shorncliffe, together with trains to and from Richlands when that line is complete will mean a high frequency commuter rail service that services both the long and short haul commuters runs with considerable time savings for the long haul runs."

"Similar operational capabilities need to established on the Caboolture/Sunshine coast line, and further enhancements on the Beenleigh/Gold Coast line. The ability to operate multiple tier timetables will go a long way in providing safe, sustainable and fast transport options for commuters."

"Rail will then give the sustainable transport capacity needed to support the surging population of south-east Queensland."

I think there should be a 2 tier timetable as the Northern Link Tunnel and the Hale St link improvements will speed up traffic and cause a net loss of passengers from rail to road if it is not sped up.

We must endeavor to make PT cheaper, faster and better than car travel!

PT Place               Car Competitor

Nth Busway          Airport Link and Gympie Road
Ipswich Line         Coronation Drive, Milton Rd and Northern Link Tunnel

Flexibility in timetabling via express services from Darra /Corinda or vice versa were first introduced on this line in December 1963 in association with the commissioning of the quadruplication.
This express pattern with the following Darra or Oxley sweeper continued through to diesalisation and subsequently electrification.
Who can recall the infamous 1612 Ipswich express Roma St to Corinda following electrification (12 minutes) or the 1717 Ipswich express Roma St to Darra with a Corinda Stop (15 minutes - diesal hauled) with a timetabled overtaking of the 1711 all stopper to Darra around Graceville. A railway enthusiast's dream!!
Sadly the complete destruction of the timetable in September 1993 ensured these patterns were no more.
In fact a closer examination of the timetable indicates no allowance for overtaking using the main running lines, unlike the 1970's timetable.
While this morning's efforts were undoubtedly impressive, these running patterns have feature in the past and should once again be dusted off in preparation for the next timetable instalment.

ozbob

Thanks for those comments and historical reflections Brad.

I can recall some fast trips in on this service, I used to catch at Oxley.

Was just about to report I've been stuck on a train at Darra for almost 20 mins. First few announcements was 'waiting for police to arrive to stop traffic, will be going shortly' then 'police have arrived, will be going shortly' now we are back to 'waiting for police'

I asked for it to be removed, as I was under a misapprehension as to the circumstances at the time, and in hindsight felt it was not appropriate ( even if light hearted .. ;) )

Delays at Bowen Hills due to a signal fault. Delays on all services.

Edit: stuck between FV and Bowen Hills.

Anyone got an eRail alert?

Edit 2: workers looking at points on Up Suburban at Bowen Hills. Several southbound trains queued.

Edit 3: finally an eRail update.

What is our rate of faults/etc compared to that in Melbourne, Perth or Sydney? It seems like a lot, but then again, they might not report it so often...

Home now.  Some inaccurate reporting going on:

From Courier Mail:

Quote
A QR spokesman said the failure occurred just before 5pm, causing a knock-on delay for services across the lines.

I arrived at Central at 4:20 and there were already trains delayed and announcements being made.

From Brisbane Times:

Quote
The fault, a point failure at Bowen Hills about 4.30pm, lasted less than 10 minutes but has caused a back-log during peak hour.

They were still working on the points at around 4:50 when I went through.  That's longer than 10 minutes.
Website   |   Facebook   |  Twitter

ozbob

Yes, bit of disruption at Central.  One stage punters playing musical platforms, the 4.20pm Ippy eventually left Central around 4.42pm or thereabouts, and genuine DS 5  :).

Earlier a track fault between Robina Varsity Lakes.

Not the best start to the working year ...

Sir Loin

My 4.31 Clevland service from Roma arrived after 5.10 tonight. It was jammed and I only managed to get on due to some 'physical action', no way was I going to wait around for the next one. The carriage was so packed, when the doors opened at Sth Brisbane 5 of us fell out onto the platform.

To top it off when I went to swipe off at Morningside, the reader flashed 'seek assistance'.

When is there going to be some accountability?

Not sure what's happening on the Ipswich line now.  (Perhaps all running normally.)  Notice regarding the Beenleigh Line on TransLink:

Beenleigh line - effective 28 January 2010

TransLink has been advised by QR that all train services on the Beenleigh line are affected by track buckles on the line.

All services on the line are subject to speed restrictions and platform changes causing delays. There are expected to be some flow on effects to services on other lines.

Passengers wishing to travel to Moorooka, Rocklea and Salisbury stations from the city will need to travel beyond their destination to Coopers Plains and change trains for an inbound city service.

Trains delayed as train tracks buckle in heat

Trains delayed as train tracks buckle in heat
Article from: The Courier-Mail

Ursula Heger

January 28, 2010 03:58pm

COMMUTERS can expect delays across the network this afternoon after train tracks buckled in the heat on the Gold Coast and Beenleigh line.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected for peak-hour Gold Coast and Beenleigh line commuters, after three tracks buckled in the heat at Bethania, Moorooka and Salisbury this afternoon.

A TransLink spokesman said one train has been cancelled, and services on other lines would be affected by the delays.

The spokesman said all services on Beenleigh line would be affected.

"All services on the line are subject to speed restrictions and platform changes causing delays,'' he said.

"Passengers wishing to travel to Moorooka, Rocklea and Salisbury stations from the city will need to travel beyond their destination to Coopers Plains and change trains for an inbound city service.''

On the way home this afternoon, message at Roma St was that a signal fault at Toombul had caused the delay of some services running through on the Ipswich line.  The service I travelled on was the 4.22 Ippy which was close to a DS5 as two earlier services had not made to Roma St.
