Am told train delays on the Ipswich line are the result of overhead wires coming down on top of a train carrying 56 passengers at Wacol.

Set in train

Mmmmm going well aren't they!

Yesterday, there was a major disruption on the GC line in the afternoon.

Trains leaving city 8 - 15 mins late, were stopped at Kuraby. No signal to the signals. Electricians had to come from Coopers Plains. Beenleigh Rd boomgates were closed resulting huge delays either side. Some citybound trains were making it through

Only the citybound track was able to be used between Kuraby and Kingston crossover. Manual paperwork needed to pass. At least 5 airport bound trains delayed indicating 2 - 2.5hr duration.

Early GC bound trains had to stop at Kuraby, transfer to a backed up service behind to continue journey.

Delays for some services I am told were 40+ mins. Gary gave it airtime on 4BC drive after 3pm.

Either QR needs more funding for general maintenance or more funding for a more resilient network.

Went down and had a look. Actually at Darra West, 500 metres UP side of Centenary Highway Road over bridge.

Some pics.  Noted a down train parked at Gailes.

Bus (Westside) arrived to pick up pax from stranded train around 1.30pm.

2:12pm Natalie Bochenski: Here's a shot of the train that's pulled down powerlines between Darra and Wacol, by Rail Back on Track's Robert Dow.

It's believed the pantograph - which conducts electricity between the powerlines and the train's power system - pulled down the wires on top of one of the carriages.

Buses have been organised to move passengers as Translink expects delays up to an hour on the Ipswich line.

Received advice that trains will commence shortly running in both directions between Wacol and Darra on the main down using authorities whilst recovery proceeds.

Wires down on trains is not a worry.  Circuit breakers in the OHT are tripped as soon as there is an issue, further safeguard is that the trains are earthed.  Also before pax detrain in such circumstances trains are also manually earthed both sides.

Footnote: Corinda - Darra is bi-di ...  not bi-di west of Darra hence authorities.  There is a cross over at Wacol.

"Around midday, trains were suspended in both directions on the Ipswich line between Darra and Ipswich due to a dewirement.

The power has been switched off in this section to ensure the safety of our customers and staff.

Queensland Rail crews are on site trying to rectify the issue as quickly and as safely possible. We are assessing the damage and doing our upmost to have some services running during peak."

That explains why the 8:15 Roma Street to Richlands train was overcrowded (more so than the usual overcrowding).

Question: Why couldn't QR still run the 8:00 Roma Street to Ipswich train as far as Darra?

I'd actually look at going one further. Could we not just send all the trains to Richlands? Give them 15 minute frequency, maybe even encourage those who can help it to Park n Ride at Richlands instead of along the Ipswich line. Any frequency decrease for stations Milton - Darra is a bad idea, especially Milton - Indooroopilly. Counter-peak that corridor is used very well and trains get quite busy.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

I would imagine because of a general fleet restriction.  Trains not in their normal positions, stabling and so forth.

Overall I think Queensland Rail have done a great job in running services for at least the main peak flows.  Many of them were up most of the night planning and so forth to run the peak.

Last evening peak running the trains wrong road on the down using authorities (Darra - Wacol) was a great move.  Yes, trains were packed at times (very packed) but that was far better to long waits for buses at peak.  Outside peak, although inconvenient buses can cope as loads lot less and more buses are actually available, although it generally takes up to an extra hour ...

Ipswich line update:

We are continuing work on the overhead lines near Darra after a dewirement yesterday, and expect repairs to be complete this afternoon.

At this stage, we anticipate trains should be running normally inbound and outbound for the afternoon peak.

Twenty buses continue to operate in both directions between Ipswich and Darra until train services can resume.

We will provide another update before afternoon peak, and encourage customers to keep checking www.translink.com.au for the latest information.

Epic wind up here at Brendale/Albany Creek/Strathpine. Water is falling sideways because of the wind gusts. The sun is out which makes for an interesting sight towards the south. Might see some potential delays on the Caboolture line due to falling debris I reckon if its any stronger up north :P

edit: Well that turned about to be a fizzer. All show then quickly gone. Although I must say its bloody cold now haha.
