QuoteSeems a few people are "sick"
I'm sure the commuters feel the same! I've never heard another operator cancel so many services due to "staff issues" (Except maybe the infamous City Rail in Sydney).

As it was a public holiday people would have been waiting up to an hour for a train...

STB

It happens every year on Boxing Day that you see a lot of cancellations.  That day they had about 60 or so.  The crew don't get the big $$, as Christmas Day is the only official holiday that train crew recieve, therefore you get a lot of train crew phoning up "sick".

Can't blame them though, train crew do shift work and work long hours.  Family time can be minimal for a lot of them.  I know several train drivers who've filled me in on that.

If it is a public holiday they should get proper pay and penalty rates. boxing day and boxing day monday included.
Anything less is a disservice to their workers.

My boss always did up Christmas rosters well in advance and asked us if whether we wanted days off and which days/half days we wanted to work. If we couldn't make it they would hire a casual/temp to fill in for they day.
That way we always had people on.

Not a good sign...

RT @maxinetham: Train delay was due to kids on the tracks. Train voice said "the reason for our delay was to protect our trespassers" #bnept

Why is it Melbourne has large parts of the rail network unfenced and they don't have problems with trespassers on the tracks which seems to plague Brisbane?

An interesting observation.  :is-

Crossing tracks, walking along tracks, driving across tracks/boom gates and drunken antics on platforms seems to be epidemic in Brisbane...

It seems the further north you go in Australia the stupider people get.

Maybe it has something to do with the "reverse psychology" theory. If you put all the fences and signs up to say "Don't cross the tracks" everyone will take it as an open invitation to cross them  ::)

Interesting, as you know I have never seen a bus arrive in 30 years of travelling on the trains. Many times promised though.

Actually I liked the old days better when the staff were able to tell the truth.  "The incident is significant, we don't know when it will be fixed, it may well be 1,2,3 hours .... I suggest you find your own way to wherever it is you are going."

My 60 - 75 mins sitting stuck on a train at taringa just prior to christmas late at night might have been the deal breaker though

I arrived at Platform 8 Roma St this afternoon around 4.25pm  ICE 156 was in the platform 8 road.  EMU 17 was stationary on the approach to platform 9, and a SMU was waiting to run across into platform 7.  Nothing moving.  Announcement that the 4.21 IPS would now leave from platform 6 in a few minutes (around 4.32pm or so).  Announcement of a single failure, which then would explain all the trains standing around looking at each other ...  ;)

Moved over to platform 6 and boarded the 4.39pm IPS at around 4.42pm.  So not a bad recovery at all.
