Train delays: Caboolture line

Last updated: 5.05pm Monday 4 March 2013

Due to a signal fault, trains travelling in both directions on the Caboolture line between Petrie and Dakabin have been suspended.

Customers may experience delays of up to 30 minutes.

We thank you for your patience.

More like 60-90 minute delays.

One of the Petrie trains terminated at Zillmere (platform 2), and all passengers were moved to the Caboolture express waiting on platform 3. The guard informed us that there was a signal box at Petrie Station that kept on blowing a fuse every time they thought it was fixed. Apparently water had entered the signal box.

Many passengers (including myself) gave up waiting along the way, and called for someone to pick them up.

Interestingly, I counted at least 5 Kangaroo Bus Line buses queued along Dayboro Road near Petrie State School (about 7:15pm) - not sure if they were used to ferry passengers.

^ Wendy contracted for a service that was not delivered.  If I buy a ticket to a movie and the power fails, I could expect a refund.  The sale of the movie ticket was a form of contract, service paid for, service promised.

We can sue a trandesperson who provides shoddy service or a retailer who sells us a bung fridge or appliance.  Can an entity such as QR be taken before Trades Practices on a charge of failing to provide the service that was paid for?

In Victoria a class action is about to start against a power distributor whose 40-year-old cabling allegedly failed, starting a horrific and deadly bushfire.  What is the difference between a power distributor whose cabling fails, with significant consequences, and QR whose signals regularly fail.

Can SC commuters bring a class action against QR for these regular, and most probably predictable, failures?  Any lawyers out there?

Yes to your second question.

No to your first.

Actually, the service was delivered. The person was provided with transport to get from A to B. The problem was, the transport from A to B was not provided in a timely fashion.

In regards to your movie ticket comparison, the comparison is flawed. A proper comparison would be that the power failed for some time but when the power came back on, you were then able to watch the movie.

Correct.  Airlines have such clauses in their fine print too.

Correct.  Airlines have such clauses in their fine print too.

Virtually every airline's social media also has "regular" delays complaints too.  And people thought social media at PT providers around Australia is bad.

Seems that mechanical issues with trains has been worsening.  Haven't been able to keep up with all of them, but the signs are starting to show - fleet stress.  Additionally a number of 3 car services where 6 car was previously the norm, a number of units pulled out post the Cleveland v. Dunny incident.   Doesn't auger well for the future ...

Train I rode from Redbank this afternoon had the doors taped closed car 1.  The other day same issue on another train on the Ippy line I was on.

Track and signal faults are still rampant.

This would mean it would catch up to the train in front.  Even running down the suburbans would mean running up the back of a Gold Coast train or delaying it.

The main reason for the express is to prevent overcrowding, not make up any time etc., so doesn't really matter if it catches up to the train in front.
