Not bad, over an hour ...   :fp:

I just had to jump in on this after a break from RBOT.  Ozbob, give it a break, there are exceptional circumstances as you would be aware due to the incoming Ex Tropical Cyclone which will bring nasty conditions to SEQ today, including the real potential of tornadoes.  I actually wouldn't be surprised to see some more damage across the network and Brisbane in general as the day progresses.  No need for a facepalm!  ::)

ozbob

Come STB, erail was out promptly.  One would expect TransLink to be alert and ready to inform the public.

Sorry > one hour is not acceptable.  But I relayed on the initial erail to lists where it matters.

And furthermore STB, I would expect many people are wondering if the bus, ferry and rail is operating as per normal.

Nothing much at all from TransLink.  Other organisations are being very proactive and putting out regular updates.  A statement on the TransLink web site would be in order.

Check out https://twitter.com/search?q=%23bigwet&src=typd  and you will see what being proactive actually means.

Stillwater

A deluge of this proportion, intensity and duration, once again, is likely to cause damage to the SCL around Cooran/Traveston (scouring beneath railway line due to the inability of culverts and drains to cope with the volume of water run-off), Glass House Mountains (briefly, water over track) and Pomona (washout of temporary railway station that, last year, required its reconstruction).

Will there be some risk assessment by QR that takes a serious look at just restoring what was, there (setting up the system for further impact come the next downpour), or will more permanent solutions be implemented, such as the installation of additional drainage, or short realignments past these known weak points, consistent with plans to upgrade the line between Beerburrum and Nambour?  Pomona is a location where trains regularly cross over on the loop.  Dual track there, extended to the existing Cooran and Cooroy crossing loops, would allow two trains to pass at speed without one having to stop on the loop.

Will fixing the problem by replacing like with like be a case of throwing good money after bad or will those managing the line see that a permanent solution, although more costly initially, is a wiser investment in the long-term?

Good ....  :)

Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Scott Emerson

Train network impacted by storms

South east Queensland train passengers will experience disruptions over the next few days as a result of storm damage to the rail network.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said the damage was widespread with the major disruption in Brisbane CBD where scaffolding from a building site in Fortitude Valley damaged the four tracks and overhead line between Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills stations.

"Repair crews and scaffolding contractors are working around the clock, but at this stage Queensland Rail isn't expecting repairs to be finished before Wednesday morning, affecting all services tomorrow," Mr Emerson said.

"No services will be operating to Central, Fortitude Valley or Bowen Hills stations before Wednesday morning at this stage and even then it will be limited by only two of four tracks being open.

"Passengers planning to use trains to the CBD tomorrow should carefully consider their options."

Passengers travelling to Brisbane CBD should wherever possible:

·         Avoid travelling during morning and afternoon peaks

·         Allow additional travel time

·         Use alternative transport

Mr Emerson said up to 40,000 passengers usually used Central, Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills stations during peak times.

"There are unlikely to be sufficient buses available in Brisbane to handle the load if all regular train commuters make the journey to the city at the same time tomorrow," he said.

Services travelling to the city on the Cleveland, Beenleigh and Ipswich lines will terminate at Roma Street while services from the northern lines will terminate at Albion or Roma Street, via the Exhibition loop.

Buses will replace trains between Cleveland and Wellington Point because of a damaged overhead power mast.

The Gold Coast line is also affected, with power line damage at Ormeau meaning no trains operating tomorrow morning between Varsity Lakes and Beenleigh.

Sunshine Coast line services are being replaced by buses, but these are unable to access some of the stations and Gympie North is cut off.

Regional Rail Network - Update

28/01/2013

A Queensland Rail Spokesperson said:

Severe weather has affected Queensland Rail's South-East Queensland and regional networks. We are currently responding to widespread signal and power outages and damage to track and overhead wires, caused by flying debris and flooding.

Extensive areas of track have had to be closed while damage is inspected and repairs are conducted. In some areas, including Rockhampton and Bundaberg, it is unsafe to conduct track inspections or commence repair work.

Tracks will be assessed when flood waters recede and our crews can safely access the rail lines. It is expected some damage may take days to repair.

Customer Service Staff are assisting Travel Train passengers with refunds, credits or to change their travel dates. For further information or assistance customers can phone 1800 TRAINS (872 467) or go to www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au.

- The North Coast line is closed from Caboolture to Glen Geddes, North of Rockhampton.

- Tomorrow's (Tuesday 29 January) Tilt Train services, Sunlander service, Westlander service and Spirit of the Outback have been cancelled.

School and transport network impacted by storms

Monday, 28 January 2013 18:48

Residents in the Western Suburbs should note serious disruptions to the rail network and some school closures as a result of the storms.

Member for Indooroopilly Scott Emerson said there is major disruption in Brisbane CBD where scaffolding from a building site in Fortitude Valley damaged the four tracks and overhead line between Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills stations.

"Any Indooroopilly residents planning to use trains to the CBD tomorrow should carefully consider their options."

Passengers travelling to Brisbane CBD should wherever possible:

Avoid travelling during morning and afternoon peaks
    Allow additional travel time
    Use alternative transport

"There are unlikely to be sufficient buses available in Brisbane to handle the load if all regular train commuters make the journey to the city at the same time tomorrow," he said.

Services travelling to the city on the Ipswich line will terminate at Roma Street.

Mr Emerson said some schools in the Indooroopilly electorate may be closed tomorrow due to the weather.

"All parents should visit the Department of Education and Training website to see if their school has been impacted," Mr Emerson said.

Not sure how sever the damage is but I heard earlier that the rail bridge at Toombul or airport line has had some dirt washed away from one of the foundations (The newly redeveloped side apparently). The footbridge/pathways near it has also been closed for the same reason. Considering trains are still running it must not be an issuse so maybe just some of the garden beds/pathways along the river have been washed out.

Updated onto Translink at 8:30pm. Train Services for Tuesday: http://jp.translink.com.au/travel-information/service-updates/details/1359364249

The train network disruptions page has been updated to provide a link to that page (which is listed in the Service Updates page as a Major disruption scheduled for tomorrow). I think it needs to be displayed more prominently on the TL home page.
