You would think there would give out a detailed explanation as to why the issue is as is ...  this might settle down a few.

There has been a bit of grief around, particularly on Twitter this morning.

This was posted on their Facebook page earlier:

Quote
DELAYS ON THE CABOOLTURE LINE
There will be delays of around 15mins on the Caboolture line this afternoon, due to an ongoing fault in the signalling system between Strathpine and Bald Hills stations.

We ask customers to allow for these delays when planning their journey this afternoon and evening.

Crews have been on the scene working on the equipment since 5am yesterday. Independent engineering experts, from the signalling system component's manufacturer, were also brought in yesterday morning to assist in locating the source of the fault and conduct repairs.

We will provide further updates as more information comes to hand.

I get frustrated that they only use Twitter for updates and only occasionally put stuff on Facebook.  I wish they would do the same as Queensland Police.  They post everything on Facebook, which is automatically posted on Twitter (an option that can be enabled in Facebook to link to a Twitter account).

Worldwide Facebook has 1,000,000,000 active users.  Twitter has 170,000,000 active users, less than a fifth of Facebook.  There are a lot of people who miss out on updates because they don't use Twitter.

Same message for TransLink!

Twitter is very useful as a primary push comms mode, but I agree anything on fb put on twitter. QPS media do send a lot of tweets too, independent of fb.

Well yesterday morning trip took an extra 60 minutes - a combination of the signalling fault near Strathpine and the train in front of us on the platform at Central broke down.  This morning the express turned into an all stations from Petrie, then delayed at Strathpine due to a signalling fault - caught the supplied bus directly from Strathpine to Central and ended up taking an extra 30 minutes.

The only bright spot was that the warned 20 minute delay on the return journey tonight did not eventuate.  QR has to do better.

The Queensland Government trumpets as one of its objectives increased productivity in the state's workforce.  The issues with the Caboolture/Sunshine Coast Line are persistent and costly to employers.  An employer will tolerate a situation where an employee is late every once in a while, but the ongoing delays on this line mean that many workers are being threatened with their pay being docked, or they face a stern lecture about having to find more reliable means of getting to work.

Queensland Rail Media Release:
All stops on Caboolture Line delays

Queensland Rail has been working around the clock to resolve an ongoing fault in the signalling system between Strathpine and Bald Hills stations, which has been causing delays on the Caboolture line.

Queensland Rail Executive General Manager Rail Operations Kevin Wright said: "We acknowledge this disruption caused delays yesterday and today. We worked hard to minimise delays this evening so the maximum experienced was 10 minutes.

"We would like to apologise and to thank our customers for their patience as we have worked through this disruption."

Mr Wright said the signalling system failure first occurred at around 4.40am on Tuesday (13/11/12) with field technicians working around the clock since then to conduct repairs.

"We have had field technicians onsite all day and throughout the night," he said.

"The fault was with signalling equipment near Strathpine. This equipment, known as the Processor Based Interlocking (PBI), guarantees the safe movement of trains by ensuring that when every route is set for trains to run, the points, switches and signals on that route are set in the corresponding directions.

"It also ensures train separation and opposing train movements are prevented (i.e. no trains can travel on the same track at the same time).

"When this equipment fails, it fails 'safe' – which means all signals in the area are set to red. This is a fail safe design feature in all signalling systems.

"The problem has been an extremely challenging one to diagnose, with significant tests to diagnose and then attempt repairs. The supplier of this equipment has been consulted in depth to endeavour to help resolve the issue.

"When initial testing was not successful, our signalling engineers replaced all removable components in the system, however, this was also unsuccessful.

"The entire system is now being rebuilt with the expectation that when completed, it will return to normal functionality.

"The failed system will be taken away for a full diagnostic analysis to determine the root cause of the failure.

"We will continue to keep customers fully informed as more information comes to hand."

An update was posted a couple of hours later saying the repair/replacement work was complete.

http://www.queenslandrail.com.au/RAILSERVICES/CITY/Pages/PeakOn-TimeResults.aspx

It's now reported line by line on peak services only.  Caboolture and Sunshine Coast are reported as separate lines. (Example: Tuesday morning (plagued with signal failures at Strathpine) had 7% for the Caboolture line and 0% Sunshine Coast services reported as on time that morning).
