30 minute delays Ipswich/Rosewood outbound trains

Last updated: 5.57pm Tuesday 4 September 2012

A track fault west of Redbank has resulted in only one track open between Redbank and Dinmore.

This is affecting trains in both directions along the Ipswich/Rosewood train line.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are being experienced.

Electricians are en route to the site to repair the damage.

The Richlands train line is not affected. Passengers heading north out of the city are not being affected.

We thank you for your patience.

Dakabin will have works done on removing the Boundry Road overpass and road modifications (A new deck will be built and reopened later in the year).

There's got to be a way to have some sort of barrier for this location.  Perhaps 3 on the north side of the bridge, for each relevant approach to the intersection.

Which then imposes the same restriction on trucks/buses traveling on Milton Rd? If it was just a camera to detect over height vehicles to flash a message on a sign then maybe, but those would be expensive to set up on 3 approaches, particularly given it wouldn't necessarily stop the strike.

Just have the barrier on the turning lanes.

I thought it must be pretty serious.  Helicopter is floating around.  Lucky I'm working from home today.

Edit:  Just had footage on channel 7.  Looks pretty serious.

Edit 2:  Train has T-boned the truck. Reports of 1 person seriously injured.

Eye witness reports suggest heavy traffic across the crossing, truck was caught on the crossing when the train came through.

There are many road users who proceed into the protected area even though there is not clear path other side.  Eventually it catches up with them.  Direct violation of road rules.

Reports now suggesting that the truck had bottomed out and got stuck on the crossing.   The driver was out trying to work out how to get the truck unstuck when the train struck the truck, pushing the truck onto the driver causing the injuries.

EMU41 lead/EMU16 on the rear into a truck with a transformer. Slight contact was made with the SMU239 waiting at the platform aswell.

Edit: Spelling errors.

It was an oversize truck.  There is a requirement to ensure the route for such movements is safe.  The driver was trying to use the lifts to raise the trailer when the train come through.  He had an offsider according to some reports.  I watched one of these trailers being manoeuvred to load a DEL at Redbank, it is amazing how they can raise and move them around.

<sigh>.  Accidents like this are always going to happen in Brisbane while we have a catastrophic combination of level crossings and heavy vehicle traffic in many suburban locations.

Given some of what I see near home (Beenleigh Rd level crossing, Kuraby), I am amazed this kind of accident doesn't happen more often.

It is not uncommon to see heavy vehicles barely negotiate the sharp bend just past the crossing (going west/north)  and crawl across at below walking pace.  They often have to cut across the opposing lane to make it around, sooner or later a car is going to try to get past at the wrong time and get wedged into the boom gate.

Many of the trucks doing this come from the southside mail sorting centre just up the road in Underwood.  Only a matter of time until one gets T-boned by an IMU at speed.

Services will be cancelled well into the night. There is a transformer under the powerlines that has to be removed. The power lines will be modified to allow the crane in. The platform face will have to be resurfaced. Trackside systems and infrastructure for the level crossing (boomgates/pedestrian access etc) has to be rewired again. Not much in terms of damage to the track. Big damage to the leading EMU but its mostly cosmetic. Still able to be driven away under its own power but will be towed due to the power being off. Minimal damage to the SMU at the platform but it will remain there until power is restored. The same applies to trains that are now stowed behind it. The cab took the brunt of the transformer impact. Underside took the impact of the truck/trailer.

Edit: Spelling errors.

I would expect that the driver of the southbound train was in urgent communication with control.  Probably not enough time to get the other train stopped.

Faced with that circumstance, someone could have bolted down the track with both arms raised at least to try to warn any approaching trains.

Something isn't quite right.  If the oncoming train was visible, why'd the truckie even attempt to free the prime mover (what I believe he was trying to do).  Was the prime mover uninsured?

In NSW I believe that crew carry clips to short out the tracks, throwing the signals to stop.

colinw

Might be best to keep the speculation in check, as this is quite likely to end up before the courts and there will almost certainly be a formal ATSB investigation.  I'm sure it will all come out in the report.

Sunrise today was about 5:45AM.

HappyTrainGuy

The cab took the brunt of the 45t transformer. Heavy impact to the right. Cab damaged. Trucker was jacking up the rear of the trailer when the outbound train collided with it. The truck bottomed out on the level crossing just as both trains turned up. Since the new timetable they arrive at the station at the exact same time.

My guess (pure speculation) was that there was some assumption by the truck driver (and perhaps even the southboud train driver with vision obscured) that the boom gates came down because of the southbound service - and they didn't realise the northbound service was approaching until it was too late.

Track between Bindha and Banyo is dead straight and dead flat.  Strange that the northbound train driver didn't see the truck - although the timing of the boomgates probably means that they see vehicles crossing in front of them for some time.  Someone running down the track and waving arms would've helped.  :)

The Translink bulletin has been updated to indicate that services will NOT resume by the afternoon peak.

That's gonna be bad!  Even on a good day, it can take a good 15 minutes to get between Northgate and Boondall (just a few blocks up the road) during the afternoon peak.

I ventured out before - past Boondall station.  There are very few cars parked there compared to normal.  No doubt they drove to Northgate or into the city.  This will only exacerbate this afternoon's traffic.

Shorncliffe line trains suspended Friday afternoon

Last updated: 4.12pm Friday 14 September 2012

Trains on the Shorncliffe line (between Northgate and Shorncliffe) will not run during this afternoon's peak period due to this morning's collision at the St Vincents Road level crossing at Banyo.

Customers are recommended to seek alternative transport, wherever possible.

Potential bus routes as an alternative to Shorncliffe line trains include:

306 - Nudgee Beach, Nudgee, Banyo, Virginia, Northgate, Nundah, Toombul, Clayfield, Albion, Newstead, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane City
310 - Brighton, Sandgate, Toombul, Clayfield, Brisbane City
315 - Scarborough, Redcliffe, Sandgate train station, Toombul, Clayfield, Brisbane City. Please note that route 315 buses will also collect and drop off customers at Sandgate train station
325 - Sandgate, Deagon, Boondall, Taigum, Wavell Heights, Zillmere, Geebung, Carseldine, Aspley, Chermside
335 - Sandgate, Deagon, Boondall, Taigum, Aspley, Chermside, Prince Charles Hospital, Stafford, Grange, Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane City
    Toombul - City services including routes 300, 301, 306, 321 and 322.

Buses will continue to replace trains in both directions between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations until further notice. Buses are unable to access Bindha station so taxis are being arranged, as required.

Customers should expect delays up to one hour, particularly during this afternoon's peak.

All stations on the Shorncliffe line (except Bindha) will be attended until 7pm tonight (or later).

This page will be updated regularly as new information comes to hand.

Quotealthough the timing of the boomgates probably means that they see vehicles crossing in front of them for some time.

Yes, northbound trains don't set off the crossing until around halfway up the straight, so it is quite normal to see vehicles/pedestrians crossing as the train approaches.

Mentioned elsewhere by a local that the LX is sign posted not suitable for large trucks.

That information is missleading and incorrect. To clear things up there are no signs preventing large vehicles from using the level crossing. There are however signs on the approaches/exits of the level crossing preventing large vehicles from turning left and right onto Tufnell road (to prevent traffic from backing up/remaining on the level crossing). At the level crossing the only signs are a 5m height restriction sign, the usual don't wait on the level crossing, stop on red lights and live overhead wires.
