Last updated: 4.46pm Thursday 23 August 2012

There is a 10 minutes delay on outbound trains to Beenleigh due to a signal fault.

Repairs are underway and services should be back to normal shortly after 5pm.

We thank you for your patience.

The Beenleigh line signal fault is the signal just south of entering Rockhampton. Train services to Geelong maybe be delayed 10 mins as a result. Train services to Japan will be replaced by bus services between New York and Moscow.

Social media 101 - customer focus?

Greetings,

Yesterday another truck hit the rail bridge at Palmwoods.

A prompt erail alert from Queensland Rail was generated at 2.51pm.

TransLink failed to use twitter to alert patrons until prompted.

Additionally the notice on the web site had incorrect information.

Bridge strike at Palmwoods

Last updated: 3.02pm Thursday 23 August 2012

Buses are replacing trains Traveston to Nambour due to a truck striking the Margaret Street rail-bridge at Palmwoods.
This tweet eventually appeared.

I sent this tweet to TransLink

QuoteRobert Dow ‏@Robert_Dow

@TransLinkSEQ is that correct? Isn't it between Landsborough and Nambour? Bridge strike at Palmwoods.

This was ignored.  It was bizarre with radio announcers reading out the TransLink notice, bridge strike at Palmwoods but no trains between Nambour and Traveston!

Eventually this tweet appeared from TransLink.

If TransLink is going to use social media it needs to be:

a. timely

b. accurate

c. responsive.

Otherwise why bother and just confuse passengers.

Customer focus?   Clearly not.

Best wishes
Robert

Questions arising:

Did Translink, in fact, order up buses to run between Traverston and Nambour in response to the truck strike of the Margaret Street rail bridge at Palmwoods?

How many buses made the journey between Traverston and Nambour?

What was the cost of any bus runs?

Doubt if they are that stupid, but the thought of Traveston Station as a bus interchange/terminus is rather sweet ...  :o

I can confirm that staff were redeployed to Landsborough to assist with the bus transfers.

TransLink have acknowledged that communications were less than optimal yesterday, and will sort for the future.

Mistakes happen, not too worried about that, but what is concerning is that when the error was pointed out that was ignored and no correction made.  That is what is not cool at all.

I have also pointed out that the Sunshine Coast line commuters do use twitter as an important communication medium re disruptions.

Part of my correspondence with TL:

QuoteTwitter is extremely powerful immediate communication medium, particularly these days with the smart phone proliferation.  I know that the Sunshine Coast commuters do follow twitter closely, as it is the only real way they get 'push' information in a timely manner.   (Web site is 'pull' information, and that needs more active actions by the public - twitter just pops up, as does erail via sms/email ).

Thanks ozbob !

eRail is not a reliable system, many tell me they get the reports after the event (this could be service provider related of course)

Track closure this weekend on 1st and 2nd September 2012 from Northgate to Gympie North.

My sources tell me that this is to allow the installation of the new rail overbridge at the Narangba Station (re)construction site.
Regards,
Fares_Fair

HappyTrainGuy

Not just that mate. Its going to be a pretty full on weekend along the whole corridor. Pretty sure the bus bays for local routes/replacment busses will also be closed at Narangba (IIRC they will be relocated to the bus stop area just opposite to the south of the level crossing off Mains Road). Northgate will also have its level crossing closed with traffic diverted along Sandgate Road to repair the surface of the level crossing due to vehicles on the down hill lane damaging the surface. Geebung too will also have its level crossing closed with traffic diverted through Zillmere along Murphy Road-Zillmere Road/Virginia along Ellison Road/Bilsen road. Can't fully recall but Zillmere will/might be having some works done to remove its speed restrictions. I don't think Toombul will be having anywork done to remove its speed restriction (they are already working on the bridge during the day (subs only/mains only)/overnight in conjunction with the airport link mob who are still doing landscaping works). The overpass between Bray Park and Lawnton will have its final girders for the bridge installed leaving only surfacing, drainage/landscaping, lighting, intersections, approaches, road works etc. Dakabin will have works done on removing the Boundry Road overpass and road modifications (A new deck will be built and reopened later in the year). Morayfield too will have work done on its duplication bridge works. There were a few more works being undertaken North of Caboolture but I can't recall them off the top of my head. One was a partial level crossing or road closure.
