Buses replacing trains: Cooran and Pomona

Last updated: 1.30am Wednesday 1 August 2012

Sunshine Coast line trains are not stopping at Cooran and Pomona stations which are closed until further notice due to a police incident.

Customers for these stations are able to catch a bus to their destination.

Passengers travelling south should get off the train at Traveston to meet the bus taking them to Cooran or Pomona.

Passengers travelling north should get off the train at Cooroy to meet the bus travelling north, however it is likely the stations will be reopened prior to the first affected north bound service.

The reason for these odd closures has now been made public.  Theft of copperwire at various locations.

This was deliberately not made public until now.  Queensland Rail have stated the cause on the ABC News 6.30am this morning.

5:00pm onwards Roma St to Nambour trains ran express past Mooloolah & Palmwoods last night. Same for Eumundi, Pomona & Cooran north of Nambour.
Reason: Copper earthing wire thefts from 6 of the 7 temporary platforms located along the Sunshine Coast single line track.

Buses were supposed to be used to transfer passengers to their stations as platforms were deemed unsafe, particularly for people with pacemakers.
Bus from Landsborough supposed to deliver passengers to Mooloolah.

Reports this morning informed me that no buses were at Landsborough for at least 1/2 hour after the arrival of the 5pm Roma St train (at 6:30pm), this despite announcements on the train saying buses would be at the station.
There were some very unhappy passengers.

Bus supposed to deliver passengers back to Woombye and Palmwoods, from Nambour.
This didn't occur either and passengers were eventually given a taxi cab ride back to their station.

Eudlo station appears the only platform unscathed. Security guard and dog were located on the platform last night.

The BIG question; how long ago did the thefts occur before being discovered?

And will they happen again, once repairs are made?  This type of stuff will add to the costs of the temporary platforms.  Pomona temporary platform had to be replaced completely earlier this year, and you know about the dreaded fungus, FF.

When I and my fellow Palmwoods pax got a lift back to the Palmwoods station by a compassionate Eudlo passenger, there were no barriers or signs warning of the danger that necessitated the avoidance of the trains at the stations ... go figure.  :conf

Copper thieves shut train stations on Sunshine Coast
by: Robyn Ironside
From: The Courier-Mail

North Coast train stations remain closed this morning after the theft of copper wires compromised the safety of equipment.
Queensland Rail confirmed passengers were not allowed to alight at six train stations yesterday afternoon because of the situation.

Pomona and Cooran remain closed but Woombye, Palmwoods, Mooloolah and Eumundi have reopened this morning.

Copper is used throughout stations and waiting sheds to "ground" objects which can potentially build up a charge from overhead wires carrying massive voltage.

Without the copper wires, metal objects could deliver a shock to people that could be fatal.

Police and Queensland Rail are investigating the theft, which could have also put the culprit at risk.

TWO Sunshine Coast train stations remained closed this morning after the theft of copper wires caused safety concerns.

Queensland Rail said passengers were not allowed to get off at six train stations on Tuesday afternoon because of the situation.

Pomona and Cooran remain closed but Woombye, Palmwoods, Mooloolah and Eumundi have reopened this morning.

Copper is used to "ground" objects which can potentially build up a charge from overhead wires carrying massive voltage.

Police and Queensland Rail are investigating the theft which authorities warned could have put the thieves themselves at risk.

Police say good prices for copper have seen a spate of thefts across Queensland, including recently from a Maroochydore building site.

Slight delays on the 8.07am ex-FG express this morning. Train slightly overshot the platform at Keperra (way less than 1 carriage) and quickly reversed back. However train then waited for >5 minutes and we were eventually told we were waiting for a signal. At Mitchelton, they held the starter there so we could still run express, and the service was only 3 minutes late when it arrived at Roma St.

Article: Trains cancelled and replaced by buses north of Caboolture after more copper thefts at stations
by: Robyn Ironside
From: The Courier-Mail

http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/trains-cancelled-and-replaced-by-buses-north-of-caboolture-after-more-copper-thefts-at-stations/story-e6freoof-1226441566971

COPPER thieves have again plunged the North Coast train line into chaos with Queensland Rail cancelling trains north of Caboolture for safety reasons.
It follows Tuesday night's dramas, when six stations were closed after a series of copper thefts from station infrastructure.

The copper wire is used to "ground" equipment that could otherwise deliver dangerous shocks to people as a result of charges from high voltage overhead power lines.

The Courier-Mail understands Queensland Rail has been forced to turn off the power between Caboolture and Nambour this afternoon to ensure no one is injured from electric shocks.

Buses will replace trains from Caboolture until at least 6pm.

Inspections are being carried out on equipment

We must assume that the CCTV cameras in operation at the stations where thefts have occurred are not being monitored fulltime.  There are no sets of eyes at the other end of the CCTV cable (assuming it has not been stolen).

As the authorities are unlikely to accept my kind offer, can we fire up the steam locos and bring them back?

Probably be 120 rounds of 5.56mm and one F88 Austeyr these days.  Certainly be easier to carry!
