Footnote to this.

Remained stationary at Morayfield from 7:15am.
We began moving again at 8:06am, some 51 minutes later.

First eRail issued at 7:39am to Mr Robert Dow (which was retweeted, thank you) I have given up on eRail, it's unreliable, my eRail recipients (in theory) all agree.
No one in our morning train crew who had signed up for eRail alerts, received any!
They joked that they would probably arrive tomorrow. Not sure the reason for this situation, maybe it is network related, I don't know.

First twitter tweet ISSUED by TransLink at 7:39am
First twitter tweet ISSUED by Queensland Rail at 7:42am

No eRail alerts were received by persons on my train scheduled to receive them. We did have phone coverage.

Grateful that they got the trains going again and that the dreaded slower bus bullet was dodged this time.

Good communication by the guard aboard the train, cheers mate  :-t

Car accident on Warrigal rd level crossing at Fruitgrove had trains suspended for about 20-25min this morn, reopened to rail traffic at about 0540. At least one Airport, one Ferny Grove and one Gold Coast train were heavily delayed.
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

Trains suspended due to crossing issue at Holmview

Last updated: 2.15pm Monday 25 June 2012

Trains on the Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines are suspended in both directions due to the boom gates malfunctioning at Holmview.

Customers should expect delays of 45 minutes. Buses are being arranged.

Customers heading to airport stations should speak with Queensland Rail staff.

You know what?

The more I think of it - why can't several of these LXs just be closed permanently without grade separation even being contemplated?  Here's the Beenleigh line:

Holmview - close.  Alternative access available via Chapman Drive.

The one between Holmview and Eden's Landing - buy out the landowners on the eastern side and close down (would be cheaper than grade-sepping).  Not a huge problem though, so it can probably remain for now.

Bethania - needs to be grade-separated long term, but you could probably use the land comprised in the station car park and the council pool car park in preference to resuming the shopping centre or the retirement villages on the opposite corners of the crossing.  Just build an underpass and expand the station parking in some other way, as there appears to be enough land to do it.  Pedestrian access to the station also needs to be updated for DDA compliance anyway, which should remove the gates at platform 3.

Trinder Park - just close it and make them go around.  There is an overpass just over 1km away at Wembley Road.

Kuraby - needs to be grade-sepped.

Fruitgrove - needs to be grade-sepped.

Bonemill St - close.  Alternative access available at Fruitgrove (which itself would be grade-separated) or at Runcorn.

Runcorn - I think this one probably needs to stay open, at least until the Pinelands deviation goes in... :)

Sunnybank - close.  You can use the Mains Road overpass instead.

Coopers Plains - needs to be grade-sepped.

Musgrave Road (on the way into Acacia Ridge) - grade-separate eventually.

Beaudesert Road - close IMMEDIATELY.  Overpass already there.

Of the 12 above, I count 5 which could be closed immediately and a further 5 which would be candidates for grade-separating over time (including several BCC is definitely interested in getting rid of, particularly Boundary Rd and Warrigal Rd).

I can see only 2 which would be more expensive to fix than would likely be worth it - Runcorn Station (Bradken Rail carpark/station carpark) and the access road north of Holmview which probably has less vehicles through it a day than I have fingers on my hands.  The Musgrave Road one might join these 2 as not being especially critical (at least while there are no Flagstone trains), but even if it does that's still 9 of 12 dealt with.

I'd like to see some thoughts on the other lines.  Ipswich in particular seems easy to fix - close Sherwood (alternate access available at 2 nearby bridges) and grade sep Wacol/upgrade and integrate with the motorway interchange.

Wacol is the only major issue on the Ipswich in terms of level crossings.  The bigger issue is bridges .. lol   That too can be sorted with a some heavy steel beams.  Forget the frills, bang. Stop.

It is marginally more convenient for local traffic, but so what?  A level crossing somewhere like Loganlea would be as well given the circuitous nature of the off-ramps, but nobody in their right mind would suggest putting one in.

It is only an accident of history that it still exists here.  (And while they are at it, they can either close down the standard gauge Pradella siding or at least fence off the corridor...)

Article: Brisbane commuters face major rail delays after police incident between Bowen Hills and Fortitude Valley stations

Quote

From:The Courier-Mail

TRAIN delays of up to 20 minutes were still being experienced across Brisbane City into the night as schedules struggled to return to normal after a police incident earlier this afternoon.

About 4.30pm trains across all lines were delayed due to the incident, which occurred between Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills stations.

Peak-hour commuters were forced to wait about 30 minutes for their trains until the situation was controlled by 5pm.

But trains were still playing catch-up at 8.30pm, with the delays expected to last into the night.

What do people think about full cost recovery from trespassers?
Negative people... have a problem for every solution. Posts are commentary and are not necessarily endorsed by RAIL Back on Track or its members.

How would you put a proper dollar value on it? Value of time figures, while useful for planning purposes are a fairly subjective thing so can't realistically be used to come up with a dollar value for what a trespasser should pay. Do they physically damage anything?
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

There are already fines for people tresspassing in the corridor. The issue today was they weren't sure if the person was there to self harm or just hanging around in the corridor as has been the case before re people self harming during peak hour.

Not sure its a good idea for natural persons.  Any number determined on a "full" basis is likely to just send them headlong into the protection of bankruptcy.

There are fines for trespassing, someone who is attempting self-harm isn't going to worry about the cost afterwards ... just so sad that it happens so often, using trains.  :'(

We are all very sensitive to rail suicides.  The sad fact though that rail suicide rate is  relatively very small (that is not to dismiss the significance).  Suicide by motor vehicle exhaust is >> for example.

QuoteIn 2010, the most frequent method of suicide was hanging, strangulation and suffocation, a method used in slightly more than half (56.2%) of all suicide deaths. Poisoning by drugs was used in 12.2% of suicide deaths, followed by poisoning by other methods including by alcohol and motor vehicle exhaust (10.0%). Methods using firearms accounted for 6.9% of suicide deaths. The remaining suicide deaths included deaths from drowning, jumping from a high place, and other methods.

That is not what the statistics show from ABS, nonetheless, one is too many ..

Victoria is the highest and it is significantly less than 52 for example ..
