Maybe they should just close each affected level crossing for a month after each incident until people learn.

My wife cannot believe how many times people crash into or through level crossings.
It's ridiculous if it wasn't true.

The crews sent out to repair them must be highly efficient at replacing them by now.
They should hold time trials to see how quick they repair them, I reckon they'd be in for a chance with the level crossing repair category of the Guinness Book of Records.

November 6, 2009

Robert Dow, from rail commuter lobby group Rail: Back on Track, has provided his "form guide" to a successful rail commute over the next week.

The Caboolture line is odds-on favourite for a delay in the next seven days.

Here is the field.

Ferny Grove line: Normally a good sprinter but prone to problems in the wet. Odds of a failure the next 7 days: 5/1.

Beenleigh/Gold Coast: Constant performer in the failure stakes. Good for sprints but fails in the longer events. Odds of a failure the next 7 days: 3/1.

Cleveland line: Lacks power for the longer duration events. Doesn't like the wet and/or winds. Odds of a failure the next 7 days: 4/1.

Ipswich/Rosewood line: Good stayer but suffers from too much work. Odds of a failure the next 7 days: 2/1.

Shorncliffe: Excellent all round performer, regular runner. Odds of a failure the next 7 days: 7/1.

Doomben: Infrequent runner, often spelled, but when in work performs well in the sprints. Odds of a failure the next 7 days: 7/1.

Caboolture/Sunshine Coast: Odds-on favourite, star performer in the failure derby. Odds of a failure the next 7 days: 2/1 on.

Please place your bets, or your comments.

Negative. Track is broken after the points outside of Eagle Junction. Trains were prevented from running until its location could be confirmed and track crews could inspect the track. Crews should be there now cutting out the section of track and replacing it with some new track. City bound it's the far left hand track on the up sub. EJ atforms are operational. Trains are running mains eagle junction to Brunswick street.

What exactly caused the break, could it have been suspect (weaker) steel?

It could have been, though I think it's more likely to be fatigue related from multiple loads.

I can't confirm what the damage to the broken track is (eg broken or fractured) and what caused it is beyond me (Its only speculation so I might be wrong but I tend to think its a fracture due to fatigue considering in late may the subs were closed so sections of track could be cut out, removed and replaced between Eagle Junction and Bowen Hills). I'm pretty sure its not a joint from what I've heard however it might have changed since I last heard and once crews were on site to inspect what's at fault. The fault is around this area between the curve and the points between the subs/mains http://www.nearmap.com/?q=@-27.4162966,153.0465128&ll=-27.416297,153.046513&z=22&t=h&nmd=20110114

Surprised you brought that up.  It wasn't well received at the time.

Are you saying that they have copied our idea?

Lighten up.  It was some light relief and on the contrary was enjoyed where it mattered.

It is not an exclusive idea is it?  Sports Bet run odds on all sorts of things, why not Metro Melbourne?  Probably wouldn't do it up here, market is too small ... lol
