the south brisbane delay was fun. we were the first in line so delay was only 10min and we went to platform 6 at central. My friend was on the airtrain which was behind us and that got in at 8:45 over half an hour late
"Where else but Queensland?"

I must say that 1hr delay, then 12 buses ordered to ferry people, must have been quite a significant fault to cause that.  FYI, QR Network as I understand it, own the infrastructure and tracks but they don't do the maintenance or manage the maintenance, that is with QR Services.

I feel for QR in these circumstances, this event was just simply bad luck really to have this all happen within moments of each other and in peak hour to boot.  There isn't really much QR can do to quell it when it happens though as buses aren't available 24/7 for incidents like these, I'm surprised that they were able to get 12 buses down there in the first place.  Plus the turnback stations on the FG line are limited to Mitchelton, Keperra and Ferny Grove.

And I doubt that TL would consider giving your money back (except for balance adjustments on Go Card if you touch off after the touch off cancel period has elapsed), as one would expect that you would use a bus instead, which is included on the ticket.  I wish I could scream to those people who use only the train and then demand a refund when something goes wrong that it's NOT a train ticket, it's an integrated ticket.  I guess that sounds a bit ignorant on my part but that's what you are buying when you buy a ticket.  If it was me, I would've done what Stephen did, and caught a bus into the city, as the ticket would cover me regardless, there are quite a few heading into the city from the FG line, not as much as the southside but it's still viable if you don't wish to stand around for hours waiting for the trains to restart or for replacement buses to turn up.

This is a complete abomination of service!
This should be declared a crisis. Where is the Department of Transport and Main Roads?

Whilst the situation needs to improve, I wouldn't go as far as calling it an abomination!

I found London Underground much more prone to infrastructure failures, although London Underground does have more infrastructure to fail.

I don't think the 1000s of commuters who were late to work would have called the delay fun.  ::)

Wow, problems all round.

Unconventional idea:
"Bank holidays" were used in the US to stop people taking all their cash out of the bank during financial crises.
Perhaps two weeks from now, QR should take a "rail holiday", close all lines from last train Friday through Saturday, Sunday and Monday (except perhaps Roma St to Airport) and do testing/maintainence/find out what is going on.

Call to compensate commuters when trains run late

Call to compensate commuters when trains run late
Article from: The Courier-Mail

November 08, 2009 11:00pm

EXTENSIVE delays across three rail lines forced thousands of weekend travellers on to buses yesterday, as infrastructure failures again hit the southeast's rail network.

Almost 50 trains were delayed up to 80 minutes after signal failures and track points faults at Manly and Kingston, disrupting trains on the Cleveland, Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines.

Up to 3000 passengers were affected by the delays.

The Ipswich line was also out of service for commuters yesterday with scheduled track repairs between Rosewood and Corinda stations generating delays of up to 30 minutes.

The problems follow a horror week for rail commuters, with cancellations and delays affecting nearly every line on the network.

Rail unions have blamed the lengthy delays on a new safety procedure, which requires Track Protection officers to supervise entry on to the rail lines and a 3m exclusion zone from overhead powerlines.

But Queensland Rail yesterday denied the problem was a result of strict new safety procedures that restrict which workers can access the tracks to repair faults.

A QR spokesman said the delays, which disrupted the lines for more than three hours, were due to the difficulty of the repairs.

"We don't believe it was a result of the new safety procedures," he said.

Commuter advocacy group Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said the problems were becoming more widespread, and lines were still experiencing faults even after scheduled maintenance periods.

"If there are failures outside of peak times it often goes unnoticed, but it is a sign of ongoing issues with the network," he said.

Mr Dow said commuters should be compensated if they faced extensive delays.

"We have called for some compensation for where people experience extended delays in their daily travel," he said.

"It can include the cost of additional child care, loss of salary, in some cases people have had to spend on emergency taxi fares and also the cost of missed appointments."

Airtrain, which was also affected by the delays yesterday, compensates commuters by up to $400 if delayed trains cause passengers to miss flights.

The winners in all of this are the bus companies (e.g. BBL).  They could hire extra staff now - knowing there will be plenty of work for them!

Some feedback received, thanks.

QuoteI have recently moved to Boondall (Shorncliffe line). A big change from Windsor where I could walk home if the public transport options were frustrating me too much. But that is no longer an option. If I head to the city by train, then that is really the only way to get home (there are buses but that's a whole other issue).

On Sunday the trains run from Shorncliffe to South Bank every half hour. I caught the train in to South Brisbane, and after I had done what I wanted I went back to South Bris to catch the 1.12 train home. It was on the board for a while and then it disappeared. There was no announcement or anything. A train came through that was terminating at Bowen Hills. Then it showed the Ferny Grove train (running 15 minutes late!).

I went downstairs to ask the staff what happened. The next Shorncliffe train on the board was at 2.12!! I was looking at waiting for over an hour for a train that is supposed to run every half hour! I needed to get home.

The explanation the staff member gave (who was very apologetic and a bit frustrated too) was that the train to Shorncliffe had left from Roma Street, with no explanation or warning.

I was contemplating calling my partner and asking him to drive all the way in to the city to collect me, thinking that may be the quickest option. So I asked the QR staff if I touched off with my Go Card as I left the station would I be charged? The staff member couldn't tell me for sure, but said that he thought I had passed the time for touching off without charge!

So how does this little story end? The QR staff member phoned to find out if the next train would be starting at South Bank or Roma Street and found out that there would be a 1.42 train going through South Brisbane (even though it was not on the board).  The staff member at South Brisbane did make every attempt to be helpful. That was appreciated.

And it did....at 1.49 :-)

I can sympathise with this story!  The Shorncliffe off peaks and weekenders are quite often cancelled - I think because the line is less crowded, when a train goes down somewhere in the system, they offload the problem on to Shorncliffe.

The other point is that South Brisbane is an important station - yet the signage is hopelessly inadequate, and the layout is primitive.  There are rarely any announcements (and when there are, the speakers mangle everything anyway).  If you're on the platform waiting for a train that doesn't show up, you have to go downstairs to the ticket office to get any information - and possibly miss the train while doing so.

Signal failure hits trains

November 10, 2009 05:42pm

PEAK hour rail passengers have been trapped on platforms after a complete signal failure at 5pm caused chaos for tonight's commute.

The failure shut down all services across the network for 20 minutes and will cause rolling delays for some time.

A Translink spokesperson said services stopped for about 20 minutes while the system was rebooted and trains were back up and running from 5.20pm, but all services would be delayed by 20 minutes.

A Queensland Rail spokesperson said the cause of the failure was unknown.

It comes after a recent spate of infrastructure problems plagued the rail network.

Meanwhile, motorists can expect heavy delays on the Gateway Motorway because of a broken down truck earlier.

The problem is occurring southbound on the Motorway approaching the Old Cleveland Road exit.

The truck has been cleared but congestion is still being experienced.

There is also a broken down vehicle on Hale Street outbound at the end of the Caxton Street on-ramp blocking the left lane. Motorists can expect medium delays.

CAMERON ATFIELD

Brisbane train commuters face half-hour delays as they make their way home after a massive systems failure brought the entire City Rail network to a halt this evening.

A Translink spokesman said signals were "blacked-out" across the network from 4.57pm to 5.20pm, during which time all trains stopped.

"The trains are now moving again, but we're still looking at 30 minute delays across the network as it recovers from the failure," the spokesman said.

Those delays were being experienced on all lines, the spokesman said.

A spokesman for Queensland Rail said the "significant system fault" was occurred in QR's central control centre and affected signaling across the network.

"There are a lot of people waiting at Central Station and other stations across Brisbane and we appreciate their patience," he said.

"We can only apologise for any inconvenience they're experiencing and assure them that we're working hard to get it fixed as quickly as possible."
