Between 8-9pm tonight Caboolture and beyond trains in both directions will terminate at Northgate and Petrie to allow crews to replace equipment/overhead wiring/checks from todays mishap. Buses should be arranged. Translink keeps timing out for me but they should have some info on it pretty soon i'd imagine.

Trains have now terminated running on the Caboolture line.

Fares_Fair

This was announced at Central and on the trains.
I for one think it is good that they were able to make remedial repairs today on the downed wires and scheduling the further disruption to complete the repairs out of peak time.

WHY DID THE WIRES COME DOWN?
WHY THE NON-DISCLOSURE OVER THE CAUSE OF THIS DISRUPTION?
WILL THEY ENQUIRE INTO THE CAUSE OF FREIGHT TRAIN / WIRES DOWN INCIDENTS?

Seriously 'though, I don't think chest beating & overblown outrage is at all helpful.

I'd rather see some dispassionate analysis:

1. What went wrong? (Root cause, contributing factors, etc.)
2. What could be done to minimise the occurrence of future incidents like this? (Preventative maintenance, inspections, etc.)
3. What could have been handled better? (Information & announcements, replacement bus services, etc.)
4. What contingency plans can be put in place to ensure future incidents cause less disruption?

If you commute by road, massive time wasting incidents like this are a weekly event. Some perspective, PLEASE.

It does seem to me 'though that the incidence of these types of event are on the increase. Is it general ageing of the infrastructure, changes to maintenance & inspection regimes, under-funding?  I don't remember much of this kind of thing back in the late '80s & early '90s (even with the 3900s hauling freight), but power problems now seem to be a much more common occurrence.

Although not quite as bad as delays experienced on the Caboolture Line this morning, the 07:06 from Ferny Grove was 5 minutes late arriving at Bowen Hills, and then waited in platform 1 for 7 minutes due to lack of driver. Hopeless!

Not quite as bad is a bit of an understatement.

I'm thinking crews may have gotten a bit jumbled round with the closure this morning, hence the crew that was meant to take over might have been occupied elsewhere?
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I find if your journey does not pass through Bowen Hills, then you are lucky. Every time I go near Bowen Hills, there is either congestion on the line either side or as in your case, some dopey change over of crew.

What makes it most infuriating is the nonchalant manner in which the new drivers stroll up to the train, in their own sweet time, no care for timetables.

I really feel like standing out on the platform and reminding them of the need for punctuality but then would be no better than the other loud mouths, so I suffer in silence.

Someone needs a big whip to get these blokes moving with a sense of purpose.

Yes, I think many people are becoming increasingly frustrated with promises of improvements, but it does seem to more issue prone than ever

Queensland, electrify the main line (Rocky) but don't use it.   All costs transferred to a couple of electric tilts ....  there are some serious strategic failings at the highest level.

Is this delay exacerbated by the zero harm proceedures?

Who said a freighter bought down the wires?

QR source.

Interesting that nothing has been reported as to the cause, not sure why.
Does the freight company pay for their damage to QR's network?

It is a photograph on the Beenleigh line, Logan River I think.   the PB15 was the usual locomotive for those passenger trains at the time.  What a wonderful way to head to work.

Bring them back!  (only joking ... )

Any freight derailments get paid by the respective parties via insurances taken out after an investigation is conducted to detirmine who is or was at fault.

I heard that it was a transformer that blew damaging some of the wires/cable tension/substation on the Bald Hills/Carseldine section.

Thank you HTG,

I certainly wouldn't preclude your information, my sources have been wrong before.
I did observe the QR Command canopy (looks very smick) adjacent to the small sub-station just south of Bald Hills station on the day.

What happens at these police incidents? Do people suicide? Are they on the platform being a threat to passing trains with projectiles?

HappyTrainGuy

It's just a broad term that covers a range of events rather than jumping into what happened such as attempted/suicides, bomb threats, people running on the railway lines, fights on QR property, trespassing, police requesting trains to stop (if there investigations have to continue on qr property trains are stopped for safe working procedures) etc. It also prevents miscommunication between staff/media/public. There was an event not long ago where the courier mail (no idea who or what their source was - maybe someone listening in on the communications channel) posted in breaking news that someone was violently attacked, repeativly stabbed in the neck, robbed and that police, ambos and firies were all on their way to Yerongpilly station when all it was was some young girl that tried self harm on the train delaying it for 20 mins. Pretty sure that story dissapeared and changed to a "small delay" message after they spoke to the QR spokesperson. Trust me there are a load of events that the public shouldn't be aware of as it does create copycats and can upset people. It's happened before eg. People running into tunnels back in 08.

STB

I would just like to add that people do have different levels of sensitivities to these sorts of activities that would fall under 'police incident', so it's best for all parties involved to leave it as 'police incident' and nothing else.  For example if we all start saying EXACTLY what did happen, say a suicide, then that could affect several passengers on the train who have had that happen to them either from themselves or from loved ones close to them.

There are some things in life better left unsaid, even if you do get frustrated that your train isn't moving.

I do remember a story a while back of a '9 to 5' office worker walking up in a huff to the guard demanding to know why the train isn't running, the guard replied that someone had been hit by the train and asked if he would prefer for the train to just drive over the body, just so he could get home a little sooner?  The office worker quickly changed his tune and apologised immensely and walked away.  Us urbanised humans, always in a rush, stuff everyone else  ::) (sorry, just had to say that).

BrizCommuter

For delays caused by suicide, London Underground use the term "passenger action", and JR East just use the term "accident".
